"Environment Map"

In the background editor, you can select a dds file as an "environment map" to replace the skybox for the purposes of specular mapping (I successfully removed the lighting by using a purely dark dds).

What is the expected format here? How is it mapped to the (cube/sphere/whatever)? Is the skybox model rotation (from the background editor) also applied to the environment map? Do any campaigns use this feature so I can see the maps they use?
