Windows 10 Update Deleting Files
Anybody else get hit with this? I lost files I cannot get back. Wiped my downloads folder.
I googled this and and turns out it was probably the Windows update. Linus tech tips I think mentioned this in one of his latest stream shows.

Re: Windows 10 Update Deleting Files
Supposedly if you contact MS they will help with file recovery.  But the more you use that PC the more likely something will be overwritten and not recoverable.

From https://www.easeus.com/data-recovery/restore-lost-documents-after-windows-10-forced-update.html :
"If you have manually or automatically checked for Windows updates and believe you have an issue with missing files after an update, please minimize your use of the affected device and contact us directly at +1-800-MICROSOFT, or find a local number in your area. You can also contact the support team to get help on the official website. "

Also check out https://www.thewindowsclub.com/recover-deleted-files-after-windows-10-feature-update

Good luck!
Maybe someday God will give you a little pink toaster of your own.

Re: Windows 10 Update Deleting Files
I don't trust Microsoft lurking around with remote access in my system.
And sadly the other options didn't work for me, but thanks for the information. Didn't know that some people were able to get help. Ill have to live with the fact that the data lost wasen't necessary, if I don't know what it all was.

Re: Windows 10 Update Deleting Files
There was quite a fuss about that, and some time ago EposVox posted a video on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUQRIsHBvYU.

The contents of this video speak for themselves and the **** happening around here is really disturbing.

Do note: this update seems to have been fixed nearly a week ago, so it theoretically should be safe to install, but I'd personally wait a bit more time to make sure nothing goes really wrong again. The same creator posted a video about this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBNm_ZD0ejo).
And yeah, that alone won't give you your files back, I suppose MS could get your device to a data recovery center, but you need to make sure that you don't overwrite the stuff you've lost, so turn the device off if possible and leave it until you hear from them.

Re: Windows 10 Update Deleting Files
Yeah that's the thing. I don't trust Microsoft enough. I rarely ever allow them to remote access even if I'm in a bind. They don't need to see my files. Their private.
But yeah, I just stuck though the update, kept it installed. Damage was done from the get go, so I saw no point in doing a system restore jump. No other issues sofar.

Put your files in a separate password protected "vault"?   (Think of it like a password protected encrypted zip file).

Id go with:

Re: Windows 10 Update Deleting Files
I <3 VeraCrypt.  Use it on all my personal PCs for the data backup volumes.  Unfortunately, it doesn't play well with SecureBoot so if you have a modern BIOS and SSD, BitLocker is the less-scary choice security-wise.

Oh, look! So is it fixed or not? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXscYkKNtTU

Some useful advice from comment section: "If you're on Windows 10 Pro, defer the feature ("quality") updates, NOT security ones. There's a separate option for each." (by Plasma Dabs)
