Asteroids....The Movie?!?
Edit: I suppose at the very least, the writers have a clean slate to work with...
-
Shortly into the movie they'll run out of lives and the audience will need to insert more money to continue. Or they might have all walked out by that point.
-
The most realistic 2D vector graphics ever put on-screen!!!1!1
-
:eek2:
....
....
It'll probably be better than most of the tripe out there. :drevil:
-
I'm still patiently waiting for the day when Hollywood realizes that movie adaptations of games just aren't worth it anymore.
I suppose this proves I'll be waiting even longer than I thought.
-
I can't even begin to think about the plot of this particular movie, if they can pull this off then WOW
-
I hope they stay faithful to the original

You win the thread.
-
Same with Rodo, I find it hard bordering on impossible to think up of a decent plot for the movie. Perhaps someone will just realize that some things can't be done.

Somewhere in Hollywood, a starving screenwriter burns the last copy of his amazing but unmarketable script to stay warm..

There's one problem with your theory: A portal to Hell is located in the center of Hollywood. It's never cold there.

True, but the US has a black president in office. Hell has well and truly frozen over.

Do not presume to know what Hell is like, fool!
Hell will have no fire, burning rock, or stalagmites/stalagtites. Hell will be just above freezing, raining, and with deep, sticky mud that makes movement next to impossible. You will never be warm or dry there.
-
Either way, it won't be the first place you think of travelling to when looking for a vacation.
-
That's why they call it hell.
-
I'm not sure, but hell for me would probably involve Sarah Palin being elected to presidency.
-
It's the composer I feel sorry for...
'Burb.....burb....burb....oooOOOOooooOOOOoooo.... burb....burb'
-
Dunno about the plot, but it should be interesting if they're hoping to include the flying saucers and hyperspace jumps.
-
To be honest, I think this actually has the potential to be the best game tie-in ever. Let's face it, the reason most movies of computer games are tripe is because they attempt to follow the plot and/or characterisation of the game and adapt it to the completely different medium of the cinema. This is a recipe for disaster because things that work well in a game rarely work well in a movie.
With Asteroids however they have a virtually clean sheet. All they have to do is nick the plot line from The Last Starfighter and they've got a possible hit on their hands. :D
-
You have a good point. There's literally no previous continuity or characterization that they could possibly screw up, so they can basically do whatever the hell they want with it. :p
-
Then again, you could argue that having characters and continuity would be screwing it up.
-
Actually now that I think about it seriously, it wouldn't surprise me if this was a remake of The Last Starfighter. Sticking the Asteroids name on it could easily be a way to pitch it to the suits/generate free PR.

It just keeps getting more frightening...

No. Just... no.
-
I'd prefer a 'Snakes on a Plane' approach...
'I am sick of these motherf*cking Asteroids round my motherf*cking ship!'

Next up: Tetris

Armageddon on a massive scale any one?

I try. Helps that PA is often eerily prescient.

Next up: Tetris
Tetris - The Movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE_1KlWFJyA)
Minesweeper - The Movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHY8NKj3RKs)
Rockman - The Movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZo6np1jZ0A)

Scary part is, for the main part the storyline conceptions in those three are an improvement on a lot of recent Hollywood releases.....
-
I really hope that the latter two are made. Just not by some Hollywood asshat (see Asteroids: The Movie).

Paper FreeSpace.
With all of those great paper models out there, as well as the availablity of firecrackers, the possibilities for FX are off the charts... :drevil:
...And given that all those hanus titles currently in the works are given multi-million dollar budgets (despite their horrible plots, etc.), surely something that sounds as crappy as "Paper FreeSpace" would get a contract. Let's come to the realization of it friends: with several million dollars to blow, your access to paper and printers is basically limitless. By going to the theater, you would be witness to perhaps the greatest spectacle of non-CGI explosions and carnage EVAR devised by man. Just imagine... The Lucifer, in high orbit over Vasuda Prime, fires its beams... Down below, the hapless Vasudans (animated in a similar or identical fashion to South Park) writhe in their agonizing last moments... How shall this madness end?
As you watch the paper-mache planet, Vasuda Prime, start on fire, you come to realize:
...you've just spent $5.00 on the best or worst student-discout movie ticket you've ever purchased...
Truly, an exhilarating feeling...

The soundtrack is a different story... I expect much 4/8 bit remake-ness.
-
Hopefully it will feature this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSkgdBGRvOw) track. Somewhere. :D
-
Paper FreeSpace.
Genius!
-
Sorry for the :bump:, but I just saw the Megaman/Rockman fan movie trailer. What's the name of the music that plays after the 28 second mark? It sounds familiar, and I remember it being longer. What is it?
-
Something from transformers, according to one of the comments.
-
I would love to see paper Freespace!!!! ;) ;)
But also a well crafted CG version would be incredible. Probably in full CG with no real actors to make it look better. Also they could get some of our resident FREDers to write the story. Some of the things they come up with are true masterpieces even without all the missions to go with it.

Oh come on after my favourite movie of all time, Wing Commander, why wouldn't they make more game-based movies.
It just can't fail!

Movie adaptations of games and vice versa are only failing because they are developed seperately and at different times. If both were developed at the same time, and the teams worked very closely with each other, maybe sharing the same story writer, it could very well be a WINNER.
-
So dividing attention and resources across two different mediums is the recipe for success?
I have to disagree. :/
-
Perhaps not dividing attention and resources, but making sure that both the movie and game complement each other, perhaps both telling different parts of the same story, making sure identifiable characters can be found in both the game and the movie. I really think its possible; having a good movie game and vice versa.
-
You can't have a good movie of a game. That would implode the universe.
-
Well, the universe is expendable.
-
Batman: Arkham Asylum has shown the world that one can have a fantastic game based on a comic book series. Who knows what other wonders the future may hold.
-

Mortal Kombat was good :D
As was the Street Fighter ANIMATED movie. (heard the live action one was not so hot)

AVP, though lacking very much in plot, was highly entertaining.

Well AVP is more a comic book movie.
They're not bad but I dislike them for the massive liberties they use with continuity (specifically alien incubation and growth periods).
-

Very true, but why oh why did they have to make that abomination AVP 2
Also I would love to see a movie of the X series. Dunno how it would work but I think it could be done :)
-
AVP2... Urghhh...
-
Am I the only one who thought AVP2 was better than the first?
-
Am I the only one who thought AVP2 was better than the first?
Yes, definitely, though they both sucked hard, AVP 2 wasn't even a good watch. Talking of rubbish game movies, has anyone seen doom?

Hey speaking of movies that I sort of enjoyed. I got the DVD on my shelf right now :D
My biggest peeve with Doom is that they changed the story from supernatural to scientific though.
-
So.
I believe that the combined ensemble of District 9, Halo 3: Landfall, and the Halo 3 'We Are ODST' trailer that came out yesterday proves that a Halo movie could be excellent.
-
If it weren't languishing in development hell.

I concur. HARD.
-
Yeah a Halo movie would be very cool. Also, and I think I have made this point elsewhere, what does everyone think about a Freespace movie. I know it has probably been brought up before, but it would be great, especially with modern CGI.

Yeah I thought I could see that coming. I'll go home now and lie down :D :D
