Title: Need help on the GBA port of Zelda 2
Post by: Titan on January 22, 2009, 07:05:48 pm
Uhm, i lost the manual, how do you save? I tried the game once set it down, read some reviews, played Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, and figure this might be a good way to burn apart our upcoming roadtrip.

If it is like the old NES version, once you lose all of your lives a screen will come up with a continue and save option. Just select the save option. I don't know what the save feature is like in the newer games because I only liked the first two Zelda games, but in this, when you hit continue or resume a save you will start at the begining. Your stats will be at whatever the were when you saved, palaces you completed will still be done, and you will still have all of your key items. So if you were at the final palace, died and the saved, you will have to walk from the begining back to the final palace.

In addition to saving when you run out of lives, you can also save when hitting Select + Up when the game is paused.  This will shoot you back to the main menu, though, so I'd recommend only doing it after you've accomplished something difficult and want to reset.  Unlike the first Zelda, saving before you die still adds to your "death count" on the main menu, so don't put much stock in that number.

By the bye, I just played through this for the first time myself recently.  Best of luck...it gets sort of brutally hard at certain points. :p

I don't know that it's "bad" so much as "vastly different."  The majority of the elements that make up the traditional Zelda gameplay experience, whether in 2D or 3D, have been largely stripped out.  This does carry the benefit of presenting the player with something they've most likely never seen before.  I found the combat mechanic to be rather fun, once I got the hang of it.

...did I ever use the word "story"? :p

And the leveling mechanic isn't incredibly bad, so long as you're smart about keeping yourself alive until you've managed to level up.

Zelda 2 was, and still is, one of the best Zelda games.* I mean, it introduced Shadow Link, for crying out loud.

The worst was that PC series. You know, the one with a porn scene involving Link and Zelda.

*Top 5 (1 being the best):

#1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
#2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
#3. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
#4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
#5. The Adventure of Link
