Title: RELEASE - Shivans! v0.21
Post by: Flaming_Sword on February 05, 2009, 05:01:39 am
Fly as the Shivans against the GTVA long after the events of FS2. Requires mediavps 3.6.10 final, FSO build capable of using the ownage settings in ai_profiles.tbl. New features since 0.2 in bold. Also not sure why the other thread with the eyecandy got locked. Oh well.

Links:

Note: Links are temporary until i figure out a better place to stick them.

Shivans! 0.21 (http://www.mediafire.com/?5mvmdjouqvn)
Advanced Effects Pack (http://www.mediafire.com/?zyes2bcs6gi)

Features:

Provided:

FSO SVN trunk builds (February 5th, 2009, revision 5063, release and debug, includes FRED2)
Windows shortcut to FRED2 with mod dir, to allow missions to be made using this mod
The mod itself (with 3 demo missions and a short converted campaign, non canon to this mod, 1 teaser cutscene mission (may be retconned))

Optional (and separate):

Adv effects pack, to be used if adv effects mediavps are used.

Installation

1. Extract the contents of the 7z into a mod directory.

2. If you downloaded the advanced pack, extract the vp into the mod directory.

3. Set your launcher to use one of the exes provided (though the GTD Titan crashes the debug version, I think), and set your mod directory to play.

4. If you want to fred using this mod, modify the provided shortcut (Windows only).

I'll probably stick a FAQ or something down here. Comments/suggestions/constructive criticism welcome. Remember that this is still a work in progress.

It's advanced versions of some of the effects, like the shockwaves and animated beamglows/glowmaps for stuff in the mod, eg. gorgon glowmap, blue beams and white beams.

Damn! Right after I've finished making a modpack for my shivan campaign.

What is the nature of the music.tbl modification. I though warble_fs1 would always add fs1 music to FRED?

Why don't you upload it to freespacemods.net?

No. That VP doesn't have a table, so the VP's music wouldn't work.

Odd I didn't see this before on the unread posts list. I like the megabomb explosions before the shockwave appears, really powerful looking, railguns are dead sexy, and the blue beams have the most amazing charge-up effect that I've seen out of all the other blue beam effects, the beam itself is nice too but at certain angles the tiling is obvious to the point that it looks hideous, and might look a little too wild to be a concentrated beam of energy. Looking through the list and seeing a bunch of different colored beams made me laugh, a couple of alpha issues on some of them but overall I'm liking how everything is turning out.

And BoE mission is fun. :D

Just started it. Love the pure scientificness of the Shivans :)
But... why does Alpha 2 call the heavy cruiser a LILITH(!!!!  :hopping: :hopping: :hopping:) in mission 3?

EDIT: "And I feel an incoming disturbance of some sort, are you feeling something?" line said by Alpha 2 has a TERRAN  :hopping: :hopping: :hopping: :hopping: pilot ani!

And why are they ALPHA anyway?  :hopping: :hopping: :hopping:

I thought it was the Rakshasa. It's the hardest cruiser to take down. With 4 wingmates all firing hornet missiles, I find that the lilith goes down real quick.

Four ships with Hornets can take any Cruiser down easily, but the Lilith is the most heavily armored Cruiser of the three. In most cases "Heavy" is a term used in the basis of armor and weight, not weapons.

Weird. I've had problems taking down Rakshasa's quickly in the past. The Lilith goes down faster than a cain (for me anyhow.)

By the way, too bad that there is no more than 4 missions, but I found 1 more error :p:
TB Thor????? How on Earth the Shivans would know about the old Viking god???

And what is the reason for the Tech missions? The Titan one, the BoE and the cutscene? Do they have a connection to the storyline? When will more missions come?

They capture humans, torture them for who their mighty god was 4000 years ago, and then once they have the info, they release the humans, and pursue the mighty god (for no apparent reason.) Then they gave up, and decided to play a role in this campaign. That's how they know who Thor is.  :)

threre's no way you can take down the lilith faster than the cain or the rakshasa... unless you have edited tables, the lilith can live up to 6 direct hits from helios torpedoes, the cain and rakshasa would die on the 4th direct hit. (or so)

Heh? Unless it has special hits, it shouldn't.
A Helios does 6800 damage, and a Cain has 20000 HP....

it was an special cain... I remember that one too... and you might also remember targeting the Lilith and getting dissapointed about not killing it on the second (dual) round of helios.

The techroom missions are mostly for showing off parts of the mod and letting people play with all the different weapons. The cutscene is a teaser for the campaign I'm making for this mod. The existing campaign is one ported to this mod from another. Feel free to make your own missions and campaigns for this mod and send them in. I'll probably end up compiling a pack with people's missions/campaigns for inclusion in the next release.

Have downloaded, will let you know what I think. Sounds VERY Promising though!  ;7

edit:  :jaw: it's amazing! haven't finished, but what i've played is awesome!

-now if only we could get a shivified warp effect that matches the 3.6.10 mediavps. that would be amazing!

5 stars.

one minor complaint: they refer to the ships as what kind of ship they are, not the actual ship class name.

Firstly, I'm not too sure having a shivan specific warp effect is such a great idea, given the canon usage of the blue warp effects for shivan ships in the main FS2 campaign. Plus, you know, it's more work for me. :P

Secondly, I haven't been able to figure out a good, realistic naming system for ships. Names in the main FS2 campaign are essentially Terran nicknames for shivan ships. Anything that was actually in shivan would be nigh impossible to pronounce as well as keep track of during briefings and missions ("Wait, did <alien name> refer to the cruiser or the destroyer?").

Suggestions are welcome, as long as they make sense. If I like your idea, you'll get a mention in the credits. :)

ok, i understand. I just wanted the warp to replicate the FreeSpace ref bible's warp effect for the Lucifer. I also understand the situation with the names... i'll see if i can think of any. i doubt it though...

One thing i've noticed: it's kinda laggy when compared to other mods. Otherwise, it's really good.

That's really dependent on your system specs... it's all part of the fun :)

The eyecandy in the advanced pack also tends to kill framerates. :P

You should've seen v0.2, where many of the animations in the advanced pack were still tgas... ditto with the interface...

Mostly been mucking around with music and tbl tweaking. New ships/weapons have been added. More new weapons are planned.

No, most of the new weapons aren't on your side. :P

I'd say the problem with throwing new ships weapons in the game is making everything balanced, yet believable.

Good point... hmmm :)

Edit: I found a glitch: on the second mission, in the nebula, I can't move or shoot, and my HUD appears in the lower right side of my screen. I deleted the advanced VP file, but it did not fix the glitch. (if fixed lag though :) ) How do I fix this???

This seems to be a bug in a converted campaign. (note that I don't actually have a proper campaign in there, just a teaser cutscene mission for one). You have to start the campaign using a new pilot.

well, it was 3.6.9, now it's 3.6.10 RC2. It did it on both though, I think. Let me check.

Edit: Only works on 3.6.10, but it has that glitch in that mission. And I can't skip it!  :(

Played several single missions today... excellent work! :)

I have a wierd problem. The game is ultra fast it's as if the time compression is 4x. Now from what I can tell the game is set to 1x so it shouldn't be this fast. I love the mod but I can hardly stay alive for more then 10 secs in the first mission due to a ship warping out. Anybody else having this problem?
Title: Re: RELEASE - Shivans! v0.21
Post by: Dilmah G on April 29, 2009, 08:28:11 am
Hmmmmmmmm, that sounds weird. Is it actually 4 times faster or is the action just fast. Are your system specs a little aged? If so the choppiness of the frame-rate may come across speeding up gameplay to some extent because of the missing frames.

I have the same problem with the 2nd mission (the red alert one).
My HUD is misplaced, can't see a thing, can't move, shoot or whatever and Alpha marker shows as if I'm dead :/

I'm using 3.6.10 with corresponding MediaVPs...
Had the same problem in another campaign, don't remember which one, but it involved red alert mission too...

If anyone finds a solution to this problem, he's gonna get an FS Peace Nobel Prize :D

You're getting a red-alert error, as the game thinks you're dead. Congrats, you're a ghost! To fix, either remove the red-alert flag via FRED, or get some 3.6.10 build.

Thanks guys for your replies and honestly, I might just do that (removing the flag) if you'd only tell me HOW...
I'm not a FREDder, so please, KISS (keep it simple and stupid)...

Thanks

I'd also prefer the Notepad method, as my FRED keeps saying something about stuff I don't have... (unknown ship/weapon classes).

Get a tool capable of opening .vp files, such as VPView.
Open the Shivans! .vp, go to its \data\missions\ folder and extract the mission file from it.
Open the extracted mission file with Notepad.
Find the part that says "+Red Alert: 1" and change it to "+Red Alert: 0", without quotations.
Save the mission file.
Place the mission file to \freespace2\shivans\data\missions\ . Create the directory. Do not attempt to place the modified mission file back to the .vp.

Sure thing.
I only needed the part where to look for the flag so that I don't mess things up.
As for the *.vp and stuff, I've already learnt my lesson :P

Besides, the missions are all extracted to Data/missions anyway  :wtf:

Too bad it's soooooooo short...

I'd love to see it as a full-fledged campaign ^^

And what if somewhere near the end Shivans encountered a species SUPERIOR to their own? OMG, Volition, why, oh why haven't you released FS3... We want answers...

Anyway, Shivans! is a superb production, I especially enjoyed reading the tech-database with entries about both species and Bosch ^^

I'm certainly gonna keep my eye on this release :)

PS: am I the only one who finds fallic resemblence in this tubular supership...?
