I don't know how many people can't play FS2 because they can't afford to buy it. Personally, I first played Diaspora and WCS because they were (are) free, and only bought FS2 much later. So I'm proposing a periodic giveaway or raffle of Freespace 2 from Gog for users who don't have it. Eligibility could be determined maybe by forum members who have registered in the past x days, who have posted at least once and who don't own FS2. Obviously this is subject to tweaking, if others think this is a good idea.
I don't know what the willingness is to pay for this but I can pay for one month right now. Also, I don't know how many people this would benefit, but it can't hurt to find out.

It's a nice idea, but I'd say there are very very few people who are actually being put off it by the price. It costs $10 off GoG and if you don't want to pay that there are other ways of getting it (such as eBay).

Plus I can't even remember the last time someone has shown up on our doorstep without already owning the game.

Well, I lurked here for a while before I bought it, and only registered after I bought it. I was wondering how many people have played a TC and want to play more, but can't afford it or aren't willing to pay, although I suppose there's really no way to know.

The bigger hurdle has always been the effort it takes to install mods and updated graphics, but even that has been made easier thanks to the new installer/launcher. Without the updated game/mods simply being available on Steam, most people just aren't going to put in the effort sadly. Yes, I know FS2 is on Steam. I mean FS2O being ready out of the box on Steam.
For the most part, gamers are constraint by time/effort nowadays, not so much money.
It's a good gesture, but I'm afraid all of us here are part of a rather niche genre.

I mean, if someone showed up here and said "I love this game from what I've seen/played but I don't have a credit or debit card and my parents won't let me use theirs," I think we could make arrangements. It's just not something I see as a recurring need.

That makes sense.
I wasn't sure if this would be useful, so I think I have the answer. Thanks everyone.

I suppose someone could purchase a key from GOG and post it at Sarkoth's recurring giveaway (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=88254.0) and see what sort of interest it stirs up.

Yeah its a good idea.
Make sure to give FS2 good reviews on steam , maby peak some interest..
