Title: FORTUNE HUNTERS TRILOGY needs MORE actors! Still more! Now!
Post by: Vidmaster on November 28, 2009, 05:01:41 pm
POST AND YOU RECIEVE THE SCRIPT!
Campaign release thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65861.0)

STILL LOOKING FOR MORE ACTORS! Blue Planet participants welcome  :)

You may not be aware of it, but for the FS2 Total Conversation The Babylon Project, there exists this really awesome and quite popular campaign trilogy called Fortune Hunters made by...           ME!
It is not only frequently mentioned in "Must-play campaign" and "Favorite campaign"-threads but is also often considered the best pirate-themed campaign for the FS2 engine in that pesky pirate-discussions, featuring fitting mission design and appropriate handling of the subject. Additionaly, the Trilogy has been called the best TBP-campaign to date more than once, has been lauded for its fitting additions to the Babylon 5 canon and has been meet with high praise from the HLP community, including non-TBP fans. And everyone always asked for voice acting.
Well, I managed to get every single piece of work I made so far voice-acted but this monster of a project. However, all previous ones were a lot smaller in scale. Fortune Hunters features 34 missions in total, my current goal is to get all in-mission dialogue voice acted.

LOOKING FOR YOU, RIGHT!

The campaign is already fully released, which is a huge plus. Your voice-work cannot die together with a project, as it would be the case with a non-released mod or something. Also, most lines belong to a rather small group of support characters, which makes the whole thing possible within a realistic timeframe (aka not years  :) )
If I can assemble the main and returning characters, the attempt to voice act the whole thing will surely succeed. Or at least I hope so.

For a summary of the story, I am going to copy and paste from the Freespace Wiki:
The player assumes the role of an human pilot in his 40s, who, being too old for military service, is leading an unusual group of outlaws calling themselves the Fortune Hunters, a Raider Group operating in Earth Alliance space. Despite being a criminal, the main character dislikes what he is forced to do to make a living, becoming frustrated with his current lifestyle. Always trying to keep casualties to a minimum, the player's initial tasks include planning and executing clever raids on cargo vessels, kill competitors, stealing various goods and escaping local military forces. The year is 2259, which is a time of change for the galaxy. Alliances shift, wars break out between various powers and new leaders rise to power, which affect the political balance of the galaxy. Rumors spread about formerly dead planets now being occupied again, things beyond the rim and rising shadows. A struggle between the races of the galaxy to survive, facing extinction by an unknown alien menace is looming on the horizon and the Hunters are faced with the most difficult decisions of their lives. Hell is on. And in all likelihood, everybody is going to die.

YES, FORTUNE HUNTERS IS BASED ON THE B5 TV SERIES. DO NOT LET THAT SCARE YOU OF! Hunters was written to be played by everybody, features a well written, deep and later almost philosophical story that does NOT require any knowledge of the show.
If you have any honest interest in voicing one of the most unquie campaigns for the engine, please post here. Everybody is invited, roles will be cast by quality only and there are lots and lots of misc lines waiting too, for those who don't get a major part.

A list of the main characters:

(the player character, unnamed, aka The boss) (NO ACTOR)
Only talks outside of missions and that's exactly the reason why I don't want briefings and so on to be voice acted. This is the player, NO ACTOR REQUIRED. The character is on the list to help you understand the general promise of the campaign. A frustrated, tortured person, trying to protect those he or she rallied around him-/herself while hating what the daily job is.

Phantom, FH member and pilot (male) CAST - RECORDED AT THE MOMENT
Phantom is one third of the player character, one third that talks. In fact, the character is very similar, having been the player's compaining from the military times until today. He represents the sarcastic, frustrated side, a person who does not want to kill but is forced to do it again and again. And has become terribly good at it. A companion through hell and back. Phantom later romances Cobra.

Cobra, FH member and pilot (female) CAST AND FULLY RECORDED
Cobra is the second third. Aggressive and angry, she joins the Fortune Hunters after her old pirate group gets obliterated. Her character probably grows the most during the narrative, learning about the value of life and responsibility. Like Phantom, her role during missions is often to point the player towards specific events or commenting on them.

Spark, FH member, mechanic and captain of the carrier vessel (male) CAST - RECORDING STARTS SOON
Spark is the support character, the helping hand and the final third. He is in command of the Hunters's carrier vessel and executes the plans of the main character. He represents the player's responsibility, analytic side and calm nature in the face of danger. Support character is really all you need to say about his lines, they are about information and alerting the player to some events. And of course, discussing current events and telling the story together with the other two.

These three together move the plot forward and act as what "Command" and your wingmen do in FS2, they guide the player.

Unnamed FH pilot 1 (female) CAST AND FULLY RECORDED
This one as well as the next character serve the same purpose, both are used to comment on events and the mission. The Hunters are a team and everybody can say something, not just the three named characters. Especially since those are not always present.
The description sounds somewhat shallow, I know. The lines usually talk about whats going on at the moment or the character is used to ask a question the player would like to ask (and the main character knows the answer), so Phantom & Co can reply.

Unnamed FH pilot 2 (male) CAST, RECORDING STARTING NOW
Same as above. PLEASE, do not make the mistake to think of these characters as senseless props. They are necessary and have a very important task.

Niset (female) NOT CAST
Think of her as Galadriel from LotR, although not that esoteric. Niset is a telepath and a member of the Rangers, an organisation that plays a key part during the events of the campaign. Her lines often use images, she is a mystery for a good part of the story.

Heavy Hector (male)  NOT CAST
Arms dealer, genius and an almost childish person. Builds weapons. Really good. Sadly, he sells to more or less everybody. HH runs a Raider Port, a station for outlaws and criminals, and is an important person on the black market. The Hunters, especially Spark, consider him a friend.

There are lots and lots of misc lines but these are the only characters that have more than one appearance and they have the major part of the dialogue. So...           anybody interested?  :nervous:    Just send some samples for minor chars and I point you towards some lines for the game.

I would be interested, but to be honest I don't beliefe I'm up to a major role.... I'd rather settle for a minor one.

I'd like to give you same samples of my attempt to help voice acting BP, but thanks to my provider completely rebuilding their website I'm having trouble to get to the settings of my webspace....

I'm always looking to add to my list.

I'm 27, london born and bred. I can handle quite eloquent through to grizzled mockney (Think Psycho from Crysis).

Dunno if you want samples but PM me if you do.

You can of course post samples already, that makes it easier for me  :)

Well... unless the danger happends to be a certain race of the first ones :p

every character flips out at some point in the game. Lots of shouting, cursing, emotions. Don't be afraid to scream in your micro.

Finally got my webspace working again.
Here is a link to a little selection of the files I did for BluePlanet. If noone better comes along, I'm going to be cast as the GTCv Lebouchere, so naturally those lines are in the file :)
members.chello.at/sattler_norbert/BluePlanet VA.rar (http://members.chello.at/sattler_norbert/BluePlanet VA.rar)

If you need more samples to decide, feel free to tell me. In total I got 90 selfmade voicefiles of BP sitting on my harddrive. I may not be a skilled voice actor, but I am certainly dedicated once I make up my mind :P

If you post two or three auditon lines for each character, we could record and submit them to you as in an audition process and you can pick whom you are going to cast that way.
check out http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/ and http://voiceacting.proboards.com/ to see how they do it.

I can try something. I don't know what to do for a demo, though: The only voice acting I have on my computer is silly stuff that doesn't sound at all like my regular voice, and can't think of anything else to do.

NO ROLES CAST YET. NO LINES RECORDED YET. JUST STARTED THE WHOLE THING!

Not even cast lines uploaded.

Unfortune circumstances prevented me from finishing the voice-acting version of the script this week. Hope to finish it before christmas.
Better a little wait than just plain text without any context for the actor, yes?  :)

I still wish to add my efforts to this. I'm twenty (will most likely be twenty one before VO for this campaign starts) Mancunian accent, young-ish sounding.

Do you people prefer one big script or mission-by-mission ones  ;) ?
Also, they will come in plain, primitive txt format to make sure that EVERY operating system mankind has ever thought of is able to read them

Well, I’ve got a female voice. I have to get some stuff for Blue Planet done first, but if you want to send me some lines I can give them a try. West Coast American accent, 22 but can probably do older if necessary.

Title: Re: LOOKING FOR ACTORS: Actually, for Fortune Hunters :-)

Everyone can voice act if he or she understands the story and really gets into it.
Casting will start in the new year. Will post the full script, some tutorials, instructions and a few selected casting lines.

I've decided today to remove most of the "this line should sound like ..." or similar descriptions of the emotional status from the script. I think it will work better as I usually do it, giving the actor full creative freedom to begin with, then developing the character with him or her together, although that was not necessary most of the time, since people seem to understand my characters and how I wanted them to be on a intuitive level.

May I ask one question?
Who here actually played the campaign?  Or has heard of it, before offering help?  :D

Isn't there 3 Fortune Hunter campaigns ? Which one are you willing to Voice Act oO' ?
Well... I gues i better play all 3 anyway !

Not played it. I've heard of it, but no idea of the plot. But it should never affect my ability to play a required role.

All three at once.

Of course not, that's what a script is for. I was just curious.

FINALLY. Stuff should be uploaded soon.  :)
There's a instruction provided inside the zip. Read these first. I've selected a few lines for the casting. You can read about the entire context in the mission scripts of course.

Main character casting lines:

Phantom:
2259_M2 (Hunters just survived the arrival an unexpected rival for a disabled transport vessel):
Yeah, run you cowards. I still don't know why you came up with this insane idea of bullying us!

2259_M5 (the Hunters are staging a raid on a convoy. Instead of surrendering, the convoy has ordered its escort to attack):
-Sigh-  Again, we are in for some killing to make a living, boss. I miss the times were we fought to save people instead for cargo.

2261_M12 (final fight of the campaign, enemies are everywhere, the situation pretty much hopeless and the ultimate goal is to allow a civilian ship to escape. If they fail, mankind itself may be in danger!):
Hey love, about that marriage thing...  eh, considering the amount of enemies here I guess it wouldn't hurt if I was a bit more open to the idea after all...

Spark:
2259_M3: (The Hunters are arriving at a friendly raider port, greeting a few old friends)
See you later friend, friend. I'll meet you in about one hour on the Turtle, old Spark will tell you a tale of great heroes and evil Narn.

2260_M3: (Hunters have just learn from a defeated freighter escort pilot that an old enemy is in charge of the security forces they just stole a transport from. Microsoft is a Mega-cooperation in the future, yes  )
Archer? Ronald Archer? Oh please...    So he works for Microsoft now...       ...don't get mad now, Boss, wait until we are finished here.

2261_M11: (A mission starts, the Hunters have deployed multiple wings and the individual vessels start to move towards their objectives.)
Alright, we'll light up the engines too then. Our jump drives are charged, just yell and we are there.

FH1 and FH2 (same lines)
2260_M4 (an old rival has just decided to enter the battle himself. The player character is going to duel him):
I guess you want that guy for yourself, Boss? OK, we are bugging out...

2261_M2: (scared civilians are fleeing from a doomed system, the Hunters are trying to buy at least a few of them some time. The pursuing Vorlon Vessel is relentless and pretty much unstoppable.)

The Vorlon Dreadnought won't be able to intercept all civilian ships before they reach the gate, I guess we will see fighters shortly. Your orders, Boss?

2261_M10: (a fellow Hunter, a friend, has been shot down.)
Beta 3 is down, 3 IS DOWN!

Cobra:
2260_M9: (Spark has just noted that Cobra has become a lot less agressive lately)
Don't try me, Spark!

2260_M10: (the Hunters have managed to destroy a almost invincible and relentless pursurer)
JIJIJIJIJAAAARG - WE RULE! THE HUNTERS RULE!

2260_M11: (all are exhausted, on the run for months and the end is probably close. The silence is disturbing, a enemy could jump at our heros and lots of innocent others at any time)
Boss, ahem...   ...it's just...   ...well, I wanted to thank you for letting me join back then. I could not imagine being somewhere else. Or what I would still be...

HH:
2259_M3: (answer to Spark's question how things are going on HH's raider port)
Business as usual, at least one black market dealer is here at any time and we get two or three Raiding Parties every month. Last visitors were the Ratda, Vree Raiders from the Alzeral system. You and the Daring Devils are on approach vector.

2260_M1: (the Hunters pay HH a visit and have just arrived at his raider port)
Hey! Somebody on sensors?  You're the first visitors in four weeks! Identification please?

2260_M7: (the player character beat HH's challenge by creatively hiding himself)
OK Ace, you cheated but you didn't break the rules...  ...I count that as a victory.

Niset:
2260_M2: (Unknowns are attacking! Her answer to "Is that their name? Shadows?")
That's what they are...

2260_M11: (Niset's vessel has just saved a refugee convoy, including the Hunters, from a overwhelming enemy)
I know this spirits...     ...these strings, webs, I remember these minds...      Am I talking to the Humans who call themselves Fortune Hunters?

2260_M3: (at the eve of the biggest battle in the history of the galaxy, a battle that will decide the fate of species. Everybody is convinced that they are going to die. Niset however, she "hopes")
You should know one thing. Your past, the little part I know about, does not matter to any of us here. What matters, are the choices we made and that the path that lead you here was of your choosing.

First post updated.    Vidmaster goes into waiting-mode  :)

Can I get a little creative freedom regarding grammar when I record? I'll include a text transcript with each.

Freedom with GRAMMAR?      Creative freedom is not only allowed but wanted, but why creative freedom WITH GRAMMAR?
The lines in FH are the product of three years of constant changes and should only be modified by the voice actor if he or she feels it is absolutely necessary. Still, they are not written in stone. I am ready to accept every change that ADDS to the atmosphere or experience.

Oh by the way: If you encounter some strange B5 term and are not sure how to pronounce it, just ask me or look on youtube or something. In general, got a question, just go ahead and ASK!

Because portraying a character with a regional dialect or accent may require corresponding changes to grammar to ensure veracity.

I don’t know what Dekker actually has in mind, but that’s the first reason that occurs to me.

Friend, friend.

There are a few 'we will' mixed with 'they're' style contractions.  I'm just not a fan of mixing both in the same sentence. I'm happy to be uniform in my portrayal.

EDIT- I've got the script, i get the feeling i'm gonna try for Spark

Send PMs to pretty much everybody who ever posted something in the voice acting forum and is still active  :)  Far to few for my liking. Well anyway, I am waiting for whatever samples I can get. Like I said, CASTING ON QUALITY ONLY, everybody is welcome. Who is best for the part is picked. All characters are open, I won't decide on any right away.

Everybody who participates WILL get feedback sooner or later, no worries.

But since "Read me first" is one of these sentences that's among the most ignored on the planet PLUS the amount of text in that file is scary   ...

Also found out today that it's not a good idea of record at a rate over 44kHz, since the emptymsg.wav sounds really awkward otherwise. I usually record my own voice files at this rate so I never noticed that before.
Mono 11kHz is recommended.

If you don't want to do an audition for a major role, you will certainly be insanely helpful with all those damn misc lines.

Still need to come up with a way of organising these. It will probably be something like an assignment list for all the people who volunteer for doing misc lines.

I will definitly use Security and Turtleshell Officer, I like those the most.
Not sure about "Alexander" yet, there may be somebody around here who sounds more like General Hague from the TV show.

Request: Could you voice act the single "Turtleshell line" in 2259 M3 too?
Also, remember to do a credits line, check the "OUTRO" script for more details.

If you want to do more, there are more misc lines
I recommend doing one or two deathscreams (because there a plenty), for example 2260 M11 and 2261 M2. Another recommendation would be the EAS Nemesis from 2261 M9. See you.

Again, remember that I can't use any of those unless you provide me with a credits line  ;7

Rawr. Me want feedback too.

I can whisk out a few deathscreams too. But you may wake up in the night covered in sweat.

Do you still need more voice actors?

There has been no response in quite a while now from vidmaster. I assume he has stopped working on the voice over, since too few people have downloaded the third installment of his brilliant campaign.

I hope that my assumption is wrong, though...

send your stuff if you want to audition. BUT BE SURE YOU WANT TO, a few people deserted their characters lately.

Hmm... I think I'll go for Spark. I'll send you a sample as soon as I get a working microphone. My last one died over the weekend :/ While I'm at it, from your experience, is there anything worthwhile below the usual Creative price?

Cobra actress is done. FH1 and FH2 are done. Several major minor (haha) characters done. Phantom nearing end of FH2259.
Not bad, I'd say.

Heh, a B5 campaign I haven't played or noticed the VA call for? Interesting...

Well VID, here's my samples, so if you think you got a use (specific role) for me let me know (PM).
Hopefully you're not passing these off to someone else who won't contact people for like 6 months.
I prefer early rejection...

well, not any time soon, no. It's simply too much for that. With Spark-recording starting now, all major characters are cast and are sending in lines.
Cobra and various other Hunter characters are already done, as are many minor characters.

Still missing is a good HeavyHector actor, as well as a Niset actress.

Perfect  :) I'd say you've got the job.

Two things:
- could you send your files in .wav format?
- don't forget your credits line  (see instructions)

since your part isn't too big, would you help out with some of the deathscreams as well?
2260 M11 for example needs some dying people, 2260 M2 (Dying Ranger), 2261 M2.
Sounding different from FH2 should not be difficult when dying and faking an alien accent  ;7

thanks for the help :-)

EDIT: and please PM me an email so I can send you the updated script

Even a fairly-cheap headset mic can get you decent sound quality; I have a fairly cheap one by some company called Cyber Acoustics that does a good job in general.  I've actually been using the USB mic that came with the Wii version of Rock Band 2 myself, since that sounds very good itself.  I think the USB option in general is supposed to get you better sound quality, but you don't really have to break the bank for the purposes of FS2 voicework. :)

Here you go again. All the original files have been converted to .wav, and I added a few death messages. Dunno if I have to do all the ones in the script files you listed. I also added my credit line.

Nonono, those are more than enough death lines  :) thanks.

Two things:
- FH2 has a few more lines, you junst sent me the casting ones.  :)
- I think you missunderstood the concept of the credits line. You may write your own and record it, see the instructions file for infos.
(for example one actor made a silly ryhme, another told the audience that he had a cold while recording)

Oh, whoops. Sorry. :P I'll get right on it.

FH2 belongs to the main characters, which means he is mentioned every time when he appears in the mission in the first lines of each mission's script. If there is no FH2 in that list, skip the mission.

Title: Re: FORTUNE HUNTERS TRILOGY needs MORE actors! Still more! Now!

about 40%

You could send me a sample anyway, for some of the on-liners. Some only need to scream  :)  those make up about 20% of the missing lines.

Status Update would be appropriate I think:

Cobra - DONE
Phantom - 9 Missions to go
Fortune Hunter 1 - DONE
Fortune Hunter 2 - DONE
Spark -  still missing, currently looking for an actor for the third time
HH - still missing, fourth actor at the moment
Niset - still missing, third actress
Minor characters - about 75%
OneLiners and Deathscreams - about 20%

the main problem are still "deserters" :-)   A lot of people join a project but when they realize it involves actual work, they silently vanish or become seriously ill.

I´d love to help with the main characters but I am not a native speaker so that wouldn´t help very much.

Have you completed Phantom in the meantime?

Yeah, I said no also, even after I saw this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUzbmIKVAHo) years ago. Bart Simpson may (sometimes) be Too Dumb To Fool (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TooDumbToFool) but he can be taught! (He's just too lazy to apply himself is all.)

I can take a crack at something, maybe Heavy Hector?

As my "demo reel", I played Delta 1 in "Command Responsibility", Battle of Neptune's bonus mission, which, might I add, Vidmaster liked quite a bit (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=97876.msg1912453#msg1912453).

As a matter of fact, I've been itching to do more VA work. ;7

EDIT: I have the house to myself this weekend, a perfect opportunity for recording. ;)

EDIT 2: I know a dude who may be interested as well and also did VA work for that mission (see credits for "Warren Bacal").
