Title: Freespace Marines
Post by: Scorpius on March 10, 2001, 01:07:00 pm
If or when the source code is released you could almost do anything you want. If someone designs an atmospheric theater of operation you could ultimately make a game that I think would be very kewl TRIBES rival. Freespace Marines. You would have the ability to travel in buildings and into ships with varying gravity and varying atmospheric effects. It would be kewl to fight the shivans on ground with bombers and fighters flying overhead fighting. Fighters would drop out of the sky and the shivans on the gound would be using their nifty beam weapon on thier shoulder as you duck behind rocks. and fire back with ur gauss cannons. Kewl huh???

Would it be easier to mod a different game to achieve the same effect?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I agree with Setekh. Maybe make a Half-Life MOD which has Marines, Vasudans and Shivans in it.

If you can. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Three letters: R, P, G. Who wants to be bothered with vitality, stamina, etc when you can be blasting away Shivan and Vasudan scum with complete impunity? Go with Half-Life.

Honkus was making a conversion to Half-Life, but I haven't seen updates on the page for a long time. FS2: SOC is hosted at FS2 Sector ("http://www.freespace.f2s.com").   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Deus Ex aint a strict rule RPG- it has no stamina stuff. It does have a enhanced level of story telling, complex object interactions, hackable computers etc. which I like, and I reckon would go well with a FS2 story... but it is only my opinion. I know someone is making a Q3 arena mod though, but not exactly what I'm looking for.

Half Life is still the best way to go. Has anyone been playing Counterstrike?! I mean the game is just right for this sort of conversion. The only difficulty I see is trying to create Shivan models that actually move and jump about like monkeys.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I know some games (either UT or Q3A) only support bipeds. Vasudans should be no problems, but Shivans would be a little more of a challenge.

...or just a model for like 3DSMAX or something?

I wonder how much work on top of the model you would have to put into a file to get character movements, etc. - kinda like FSMM work, actually.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

untrue...  Unreal Tournament supports multiped skeltons in models, buts its damn hard to get the AI working properly with them
(the ChaosUT team made a fully working custom model called the Chrek or sumin...  it looks good, but is DAMN buggy when route-finding is concerned)

Unreal & Deus Ex are out, cos i don't think they have full proper skeleton systems like UT or Half-Life
(I can't *really* speak for Deus Ex, but from what ive seen (screens & the demo in action over a friends house) the animation seems a bit stiff & wooden...  & i dont think it was added into the full game...)

Q3 doesn't have a proper skeleton system, the models just rotate at set points (look at the key-config area where your chosen character mimics the moves...  the waist, elbows & hips all have preset joints) although Elite Farce, FAKK2 & Alice all had the system added...

Half-Life DOES support 4-legged skeletons quite well (look at Gonarch), but i don't know how the aging AI would cope with a 5th working leg...  (Neil Manke is having trouble incorporating 2 new monsters into TH ("http://www.planethalflife.com/manke"), mainly down to the fact that they need new AI for their new skeletons)

it may be possible to shrink Gonarch's frame & leave the 5th rear limb as a aesthetic attachment

thats the charm of skeletons...  you just tell the skeleton how to move & it deforms the mesh appropriately...

unfortunatly, its this system that results in the infamous 'collapsing arse syndrome' where the hip joint is set in the wrong place to the mesh & the arse area of the model litterally collapses when the model runs, jumps or crouches  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Would it be possible to create a character who could walk along walls and the ceiling? Obviously this is what Shivans do, but I'm not sure - maybe just me their 'jump' move higher or longer-lasting, though this does not have the same effect.

if were talking Half-Life here, there are 2 ways i know...

the obvious one is to lower the gravity...

the other is to somehow make shivan stick to a surface & give them a high speed, although that could be disasterous if the AI cant keep up  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

UT could probably handle it cos UnrealEd is so versatile!

Q3A might be able to do it with some heavy Radiance hacking...

Alien Vs. Predator would be a good looker for this, shame that there is no known SDK, & even if there was, the models are way to hard to make (i.e. they need to be built to fall apart easily  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif))

Doom is out of the question  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

AvP would be perfect seeing as the Alien can already walk on walls.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

However it would be sweet to get it into UT, seeing as more play that game, as well as the fact that it 0wnz.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

as i said, UT will pose problems...

1) multi-legged bots have problems with route finding (as i said, the Chrek regularly gets stuck on floor brushes & the like)

2) Unreal levels are *****es to make...  remember they are built backwards  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

whereas Quake, HL (okay, Quake  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)) & Lith levels are built room by room out of voids, Unreal starts with a huge block & the level is carved out & then prefabs are placed...

its the main reason why Unreal is so good at rendering open spaces...  the block you start & the amount you can do with it is based on system memory & engine limitations...

In Worldcraft/Radiance/Lithtech you can just add as many rooms & corridors as you want, you just get horrid r_speeds & load times or you just break the engines' parser & crash the game  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

So if a level was carved from a block which is too large for my PC, I can't play that level..?

Good luck!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'll try a Magnum and see if I can do a head shot on a jumping Shivan. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

This would be a lot easier if you could define where exactly the head of Shivan is. It does have that bit with all the eyes, but it looks more like a joint than a head...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

*NeoHunter takes aim*

*Too late. The Shivan is faster*
