Well, the CVS builds (or HEAD builds?) allow to make Animated Nebulae Poofs. (that are those things when you are flying inside the nebulae, but you probably already knew that).... So...

I don't think you can animate nebula backgrounds, can you?

But it still makes nice nebula effects

The nebula poof maps for the in-nebula missions.

Not sure. I know for sure that you can use animated sun maps. So... you could just try it.
