...Some of those are good, some are... I don't know.

I've seen most of those on SourceForge, honestly. BRL-CAD from my last look at the software is a bit archaic, but should be a pretty useful engineering tool. I'm actually more disappointed at what I didn't see on the list. No Wings 3D? It might have something to do with that blog page being 2 YEARS OLD.

The most interesting 3D software I can suggest is Sculptris, which if nothing else, is fun to play with: http://www.pixologic.com/sculptris/

In my own defence, I gave it a speed glance, caught 2012 at the bottom and checked the top for an earlier date. Work must have blocked off an indicative banner or something. :p

For the needs of this community, I think Blender is the most useful of the applications listed. Sculptris is also quite powerful for organic modeling. Wings should definitely be listed.  I notice they listed SketchUp 6.0 but it is already up to version 8. I wouldn't recommend it for ship modeling though.

Thanks for the list. I like trying new programs, although 3DS Max is still my go-to whenever I decide to fail at modeling. At least Autodesk realizes college kids are poor and gives it out for free...
