Title: FreeSpace Port 3.7 + FSPort Media VPs Release!
Post by: Goober5000 on August 18, 2020, 01:14:18 am
Freespace Port 3.7 + FSPort Media VPs Release

Version 3.7 has been released!  This is less of a major upgrade than 3.6, so I kept the same thread, but it still brings a few significant changes.  Here is the changelog from the readme:

Code: [Select]
Updates in 3.7.0:
--Fix MediaVP compatibility by syncing FSPort MediaVP versions
--Update the French translation, thanks to Achille
--Attempt to fix UTF-8 compatibility
--Update the traitor.tbl debriefing text for the Vasudan persona
--Update game_settings.tbl version-specific commenting
--Use distance-ship-subsystem for the "enter the docking bay" directive in Playing Judas
--Don't automatically target turrets when targeting a ship (use FSO flag to restore FS1 behavior)

Original version 3.6 post below:

We are pleased to present version 3.6 of the FreeSpace Port, and perhaps more importantly, the long-awaited version 4.3 of the FreeSpace Port MediaVPs!

Features include:

As always FSPort remains retail compatible but optimized for Freespace Open.  If you use FSO, we recommend a recent build such as 19.0 or later.

To install, use the FreeSpace Open Installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/) or

(https://fsnebula.org/static/kn_download.png) (https://fsnebula.org/mod/fsport-mediavps)

Updates for the various campaigns on Knossos that use FSPort and the FSPort MVPs will be rolled out over the next few days.

Downloading the MVPs right now, and looking forward to the soon to be released upgrades to campaigns using the FSPort has their root mod. It's definitely a good time for another ST:R playthrough, too.  :yes:

Will a simple copy of the ini file from the original port folder work (with the obvious changes for the prime mediavp folder)?

Probably... but it might be better to copy the .vp files and then let the Installer verify them for you.  In the process it'll copy a new mod.ini.

I'm an old-schooler.  I don't use the installer or Knossos.

Ha!  Well then here are the files that changed:
https://porphyrion.feralhosting.com/datacorder/fsport_files/releases/fsport3_6.7z
https://porphyrion.feralhosting.com/datacorder/fsport_files/releases/fsport-missions.7z
https://porphyrion.feralhosting.com/datacorder/fsport_files/releases/sparky_hi_fs1.7z

The first of those three includes a new mod.ini.

The FSPort MVPs are a little more involved:
https://fsnebula.org/mod/fsport-mediavps

Note that if you want to use Mjn.Mixael's main halls, you will also have to download his main hall VPs.

Thanks, but shouldn't the ini file include a dependency for the 4.3.3 MediaVP folder (whatever it maybe), or do the new Port VP files have all of the necessary assets included?  Can I use that ini file with the same VP files I downloaded from the Knossos link, or will I HAVE to use the ones you linked to?

In regards to STR, can I just modify the ini file to support the 3.6 folder (and the 4.3.3 media VPs if the above answer is yes), or is all of STR now included in the 3.6 release?

Downloaded the new vps but have noticed when I play the game, the aten is the retail version and not the HTL one. Other than that love the new apollo!

The situation is the same as before: the Port contains the retail-compatible files and the FSPort MVP contains the upgrades.  The main difference is how the assets are organized between the standard MVPs and the Port MVPs.

The VPs are the same whether you download them from my links or the Knossos links.

Here is the FSPort MVPs mod.ini file:
Code: [Select]

modname      = FSPort MediaVPs v4.3.x;

You can just modify the mod.ini file.  ST:R is almost exactly the same; there are just a few minor bugfixes.  Here is the ST:R mod.ini:
Code: [Select]
[launcher]
modname      = Silent Threat: Reborn v1.4 - MediaVPs 4.3.x;
image255x112 = fsport-str.bmp;
image182x80  = fsport-str_small.bmp;
infotext     = As the Great War rages on, you've been commissioned by Galactic Terran Intelligence for special intelligence operations.  Your objectives are to contain the Shivan onslaught and preserve the fragile Terran-Vasudan alliance.  But a series of suspicious events cloud the GTI's spotless record.  Is the GTI setting you up or are the Shivans spreading their evil rage?;
website      = http://fsport.hard-light.net/website/str/;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=140.0;

[multimod]
primarylist = fsport-mediavps_43x;
secondarylist = fsport,mediavps_43x;

Downloaded the new vps but have noticed when I play the game, the aten is the retail version and not the HTL one. Other than that love the new apollo!

The Aten will be fixed in the next release.  The Apollo is courtesy of the FSU team, but thanks. :)

Version 4.3.2 of the FSPort MediaVPs uploaded with all known issues fixed.  This includes several things MjnMixael pointed out on Discord.

1) Beam piercing effects for the various SSL beams
2) Main hall proper music entries
3) Subspace model and textures
4) Shockwave effect
5) Some sound entry conflicts
6) Axem's "Lost HUD, Rebuilt" - FS1 version

Bumping this to say that an update is in progress.  This will fix the weapon parsing issue that appears on post-21.0 builds, add MVP 4.4 compatibility, upgrade main hall support using modular tables, and fix a few other minor issues.

Great news, thanks a lot. I assume the upcoming update is also meant to solve several issues caused by partial overlaps between FSPort MVPs and regular MVPs, right? IIRC, many tables were in direct conflict.

The August update, the one in the first post of this thread, was intended to straighten out the MVP organization.  Are there additional issues that need fixing?

FSPort version 3.6.8 is out on Knossos and the FSO Installer.  It fixes the subspace node model, the Vasudan Probe low-poly model, and the parsing error in weapons.tbl.

The FSPort MVPs update will be another few days.  The script configuration update is done, but the main hall update is still in progress.

In the Installer version of FSPort MediaVPs 4.4, there wasn't an option to download "HD Mainhalls by Mjn."

However, that particular option was there in previous FSPort MediaVPs versions in the Installer (namely 4.3).

Is it possible they could get put in the Installer for FSPort MediaVPs 4.4 or should I just copy those files from my FSPort MediaVPs 4.3 folder ("galatea_a.vp", "bastion_a.vp", etc.) and put them in my FSPort MediaVPs 4.4 folder?
Title: Re: FreeSpace Port 3.6 + FSPort Media VPs Release!
Post by: Goober5000 on April 19, 2021, 10:28:56 pm
The older version of FSPort required some special table handling because FSO didn't have full modular support for main hall tables.  This was added in FSO 21.0, so the newest version of FSPort which uses 21.0 no longer needs that special package.  And in fact, adding those VPs will cause problems.

Regardless of whether you're running the old version or the new version, you *do* need the separate downloads of the main halls themselves.  The old FSPort mainhall package didn't provide the entire set of main halls, just the main hall table handling package.

Thank you for trying to explain this to me.  All I know is I was able to get the HD mainhalls when playing FSPort MediaVPs 4.3 campaigns.

For someone like me who doesn't use Knossos right now and still works with the Installer, how would I get to use the HD mainhalls with FSPort MediaVPs 4.4 campaigns?  I.e., which files do I need to download and where do I put them?

Hmm.  I thought I had added the option to download them from the main hall mod on Knossos, but I didn't, and now I remember why.  They're not packaged as VPs, they're loose files.  I'll need to package up the current versions of the main halls, upload them, and add the links to the FSO Installer.

I haven't tested this thoroughly, so it may be symptomatic of a larger problem, but Tsunamis are occasionally having trouble acquiring targets. Most of the time they lock and fire okay, but sometimes they report that a target is out of range, even when it clearly isn't. Using the July 3rd nightly.

Nothing changed in the Port, so this must be a recent bug.  Can you try the recent stable releases to narrow down when the bug was introduced?

I haven't been able to reproduce this on FSO 21.2.

That's useful, thanks.

Can you narrow it down using nightly builds between 21.2 (on May 2) and July 3?  Use the binary search (https://www.tutorialspoint.com/data_structures_algorithms/binary_search_algorithm.htm) method - so start with a nightly around June 2 and work from there.
Title: Re: FreeSpace Port 3.6 + FSPort Media VPs Release!
Post by: Antares on July 09, 2021, 12:00:31 am
Based on my testing, the culprit appears to be the June 24th nightly (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=97651.0), which definitely contains the bug; from what I can tell, the June 23rd build does not.

The changelog for that particular nightly shows changes to the weapons and HUD code, so maybe something got borked.

Would it be possible to rejigger The End to make use of actual debris from a Lucifer as opposed to generic "Shivan debris"? Or would that break stuff? It looks very impressive in Scroll and would fit the ending cinematic well, but it might also, I dunno, kill the player or something.

You can tinker with the $Debris setting for the SD Lucifer in ships.tbl (or make a table variant), however that requires a lot of iterative work to make it just right that could potentially make the work disporpotionate to the effect.

The FSPort MVPs have been updated on the FSO Installer and Knossos.  Awakenings, Cardinal Spear, Destiny of Peace, and Shivans! have been updated to use the latest MVPs.

On the Installer, I downloaded these as new campaigns recently.  However, when I looked at the mod.ini, it had the MediaVPs (FSPort and FS2) listed as 4.3 (for example mediavps_43X).  Just to be sure, are these not compatible with the newest MVPs (4.4.X) and I should leave the mod.ini file alone?  Or are they compatible with the 'regular' and FSPort 4.4.x and therefore I can simply change the '3's in the mod.ini to '4's?

4.3 is what they were last tested with, but they should also be compatible with 4.4.  You can change the 3's to 4's.

In some missions, the default music track sometimes fails to play, leaving you coasting in silence until something happens to change the track. I've had this happen in "Last Hope" and "The Wait," but I haven't been able to reliably reproduce it; I thought it might have something to do with the timer changes made in the January 3 nightly (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=97969.0).
Title: Re: FreeSpace Port 3.6 + FSPort Media VPs Release!

It should not have anything to do with those timer changes.

I've noticed this before (prior to January 3) but haven't been able to reproduce it reliably myself.  Pausing and unpausing will fix it.

If the Bastion is destroyed in Clash of the Titans, victory music will play during your debriefing.

(Command will also tell you to "return to the Delta Serpentis," but that's Volition's fault.)

If the Bastion is destroyed in Clash of the Titans, victory music will play during your debriefing.

That doesn't actually seem possible, according to the mission logic.  If the Bastion is destroyed it can't depart, which means the campaign can't proceed.  The failure music should always play when the campaign can't proceed.

A quick test using cheats confirms it. Maybe it's because it's running from the tech room?
Title: Re: FreeSpace Port 3.6 + FSPort Media VPs Release!
Post by: Goober5000 on January 29, 2022, 12:13:38 pm
That's an important detail, yes.

In FS1, there is no "average"  music, so "success" is used instead.  But the tech room will play "average" when not all objectives are complete, because there is no way for the tech room to tell whether the campaign should proceed in this situation or not.

There's some sequence breaking going on in Last Hope, mostly because Isis Repair follows some weird pathfinding/docking logic. Two separate chains of events run parallel to each other: the arrival of Shivans and the repairs that Isis conducts on the Hope. The arrival of reinforcements (and the end of the mission) is triggered by the destruction of all Shivan forces and has nothing to do with the Hope's repairs, which are just window dressing for the mission. However, there's some in-mission dialogue that's tied to the progress of the repairs (triggered by the destruction of the three Dragons that jump in after you take out the Thunder).

The problem here is that repairs won't actually begin until Isis Repair docks with the Hope, which it seems in no hurry to do. Isis Repair jumps in around 6:25-6:30 and shows an arrival time of around 90 seconds, meaning that theoretically, it shouldn't dock any later than 8 minutes into the mission. However, Isis Repair doesn't travel to the Hope in a straight line and appears to follow a meandering, often circuitous path, meaning that it sometimes doesn't actually dock until the 10-minute mark or later. The mission clock is ticking all this time, meaning you'll get messages about the progress of the Hope's repairs before Isis Repair ever docks with the ship. (I think the deployment of Dragons may have been intended to alleviate this by keeping the player occupied and giving Isis more time to dock, but Dragons are easier to take out in FSO than in retail.) On my last playthrough, Isis Repair traveled to a point about 5km from the Hope, turned around, and started coming back, meaning that it never docked for the entire duration of the mission.

None of this stops you from completing the mission because all you really have to do to progress is kill Shivans, but it isn't doing immersion any favors, either.

Yeah the two parallel sequences have been known for a while.  I think the path problems are aggravated by the MVP pathing behavior, which will be adjusted in the next version.

Another new version of the FSPort MediaVPs, 4.6.3, is up.  This one has new HoL reskins for the 4.6 version of the Aten, as well as new medical reskins for the 4.6 versions of the Faustus, Elysium, Chronos, and TAC 1.

Also, since the 4.6 Chronos and TAC 1 are incompatible with the tacskins optional package, I've added GTFr Chronos#reskinnable and TAC 1#reskinnable which use the slightly older models for which the maps were designed.

The FSPort MediaVPs have now been updated to 4.7.  Most of the changes are on the standard MediaVPs side and can be seen here (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=99050.0).  On the Port MediaVPs side:

There is one known issue:
Code: [Select]
Warning: fs1_effects-wep.tbm(line 723):
Warning: Unknown particle effect name 'TrailTreb1Red' encountered while parsing 'Phoenix V#Shivan'!
File: parselo.cpp
Line: 322
This will be fixed by Kestrellius in the next few days

I haven't tried it yet, but I will when a friend of mine wants to play FS Port with me again next week.

Cross-posting from the support thread:

Apologies, I missed updating one of the version numbers when I uploaded the new version of FSPort MediaVPs yesterday.  I've just fixed it.  Restart Knossos, refresh the mod list (to make sure the FreeSpace Port MediaVPs mod shows "last updated" on January 29), and try again.

The update is now available on the FSO Installer and will be on Knossos in a few minutes.
