Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
Ok I just wanted to ask if raider wars gets better or if I should just end the madness now.

In the past three missions I have had to

<SPOILER ALERT>

1.  Stop a group of 8 or so narn heavy fighters from torpedoing a weak and frail centari freighter.  If even one fighter gets by the freighter doesn't last long enough to swing around.  This one took me about a hour and a half to complete as even if I managed to destroy the fighters, being forced to fly in a straight line to hit them means my hull is low enough one or two hits when a CENTARI STRIKE FORCE jumps in ends in my destuction.

2.  Ok, next mission.  On this one I just gave up and used the built in skip  button.  I jump in and five seconds latter....I die.  Took a half hour to figure out that the asteroids I need to destroy have a explosive range and before i can get my wingmen to stop they destroy the asteroids that are RIGHT ON TOP OF US as we jump in...ergo death.  Even knowing this only in one of ten tries do I get out of the blast in time....with eleven percent hull....and my stupid wingman die....and I dont have the abilitiy to protect the freighter AND the rescue shuttle from about a dozen asteroids at once.   Two hours latter I just gave up.

3.  Ok so the NEXT mission, another rescue.  There is a bomb on a freighter and we need to help make sure it gets difused.  No problem right?  So I escort the defusal team and as we near the freighter it blows up right in my face and me and my flight bite the bullet....again.  At this point I prompltly began to curse the gamming gods.

<END SPOILER ALEART>

These series of events just seem like the designers of this campaign just wanted to see how many near impossible situations they can put a player through until there is a joystick hole in their monitor.  I must admit this confuses me.  I had looked at a few threads and it appeared to get good reviews.

So my question is this, should I just let the madness stop... or would persistance have a chance of paying off with some good missions latter on?

Hehe IP will have a blas when he reads this....

Ok, about your gripes: You've made through some of the more frustrating missions, so the ride shold get a bit smoother from now on.

1. Congrats on taking out all fighters. An alternative (and easier) way would be to severly damage one of the Narn transports, which will cause them to surrender. This can be done quick enough to stop all Frazis before they pummel the Centauri transport.

2. The asteroid field density depends on your difficulty setting (the higher your setting, the more rock get thrown at you). The mission is balanced for "Easy" setting IIRC. I couldn't finish it on "Medium".

3.
Spoiler:
The Asimov transport is supposed to blow up, it's part of the storyline. There's nothing you can do to save it. When it's gone kaboom, you have to defend some of the escape pods though. Target an escape pod and press "g" to target its nearest attacker and focus on killing that Zephyr, rinse and repeat. And you have to survive the mission of course

I hope that helps a bit. Direct all your blame towards IP Andrews, since he wrote the missions ;)

Re: Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
The explosive asteroids is a bug. They're not supposed to do that much damage when they explode. Just stay as far away from the Gold wing asteroids as possible when you detonate them. None of the other asteroids suffer the bug. Only the Gold wing ones.

To answer your question the campaign doesn't get any easier. The design philosophy was to create something that posed a challenge, and forced the player to think of their feet and use the resources available to them. It was never meant to be TBP's only campaign. Only a side show to a more conventional campaign like the Civil War campaign.

Re: Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
If the exploding asteroids are a bug i would suggest if another patch to this campaign is ever feilded they be taken out entierly then, it was my experiance that it was nearly impossible to get away from them before they blew as you warp in right on top of them and your wingmen blow them.

As far as thinking on your feet, there is a diffrence between having the player think quickly and setting the player up for failure.

The asteroid bug will be fixed. As for your other comment, if RW isn't your cup of tea, play something else.

Re: Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
Dont forget to adjust the difficulty setting if you need too.  I would suggest very easy.

where is that button?

I'm stuck in an other mission (the first PSI-Shuttle excort mission)
I've tried it too often now, even at very-easy.. and the psi-thing gets blowen up by the fighters all the time..
even tried it with a bagder.. equipped with 4 40mm and 2 60mm plasmas and 12 dumbfire rockets.

I've allredy read a walkthrou for this mission.. I just can't get the fighter soon enough.

Oh I'd give up then. That's an easy mission. It's just a case of planting some Venom 1 anti-fighter missiles in the right spots and taking out lots of fighters at once. Then annoying any fighters that get a lead on you by shooting at them and forcing them to break off their pursuit of the crew shuttle. It's a piece of cake really. If you can't finish it give up seriously.

Re: Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
Something I noticed about the PSI shuttle mission is that if you attack the Raider freighter as soon as it comes through the jumpgate, it seems to blow its cargo pods sooner.  When that happens, the Zepher fighters come swarming out while the PSI shuttle is still pretty far away from the station.  Waiting until the freighter releases its fighters of its own accord lets the PSI shuttle put more distance between it and the freighter, so the enemy fighters have a longer attack run.  Which, of course, gives you and your wingman more time to take them out before they're in weapons range.

Re: Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
If it wasn't for the fact that the freighter always detonates it's cargo pods at exactly the same place which it should always reach at exactly the same time, then this would be a great piece of advice.

I'm just happy to finaly find the skip feature..
maybe I'll try that mision later..
(no, I'm not good at playing this sort of games.. I just like them :))
you know.. I actualy did manage to kill all the fighters in time.. days before I first posted here but I was stupid enough to get myself killed in some sort of blast.. (you know what I mean)
never got the fighers again.

the next problem is exactly this:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44054.msg901476.html#msg901476

well Ive tried some binaries.
withe tbp 3.3a and rw 2.2 I was not able to get a workung binary.
the newer ones refuse to start because of the ships.tbl issue
and the older ones crash with the error mentioned in the refernce above.

well is there.. at this time any combination of game engine, tbp and rw, which is actually playable?
(I've not tried tbp 3.4 yet because the download link in your message does not yield the file and apart from that, your message indicates this IS a beta, comming with all issues known to come with a software labeled as 'beta')

edit:
just found a solution in step 5 here:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39708.0.html

so.. now I might have a stable setup to play EMW (already did) and RW (doing right now).
thanks for your patience with my questions :)

As for that skip feature, all you have to do is fail a mission five times.

For me... Fly Badger with 40mm in the 2-bank and disruptors in the 4-bank.  After killing PSI wing, go max burn for the GOD and order your wing to guard the corvette.  When GOD goes bad, switch to disruptors and start blowing away turrets, starting with the most dangerous ones.  When the corvette goes bad, order your wingmen to disable it.  When your reinforcements arrive, have them help you with the GOD until its disarmed and goes friendly again, then all assist with the corvette.

Re: Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
Hey, I've got a question.  Is there a trick or special tactic to beating the mission in RW where you're supposed to scan the asteriod base?  I always wind up maybe scanning the Archon or one component on the asteriod base before Fencer changes the IFF codes and all those Zephrs and Sunhawks swarm me.

Re: Pulling Hair in Raider Wars
Just be as quick and efficient with your scanning as you possibly can. Eventually you will be recognised. Then it's a case of running like hell for the extraction point and their avoiding getting blown up by a million Zephyrs while your HUD repeatedly flashes "requesting extraction".  ;7.

Okay, gotcha.  Is there a beacon that pops up once I'm finished scanning that gives me a direction to run?
