Title: Possible Menu Music
Post by: Darius on January 19, 2008, 11:25:25 pm
From battle track to menu music.

Just finished the first draft of a quick remaster/remix of Joshua II for use as menu music in BP2. I'm trying something a bit more ambient and gentle-paced.

Success? Failure? Does it need more percussion? Etc.

Success. I really can't add anything. The moment this track started playing, I could almost see the Main hall of Blue Planet and feel myself inputting the basic keyboard settings and such. I mean, wow. Works perfectly as an ambient track, especially in menus.

I shall save this for future enjoyment.:yes:

EDIT: I personally would have it crescendo at the end rather than decrescendo, especially seeing as how it has to loop.

Not bad, but I personally prefer the original menu theme - it perfectly captured the mood of the story.

Thinking about the BP music, was Brief09 cut from a longer piece of music? As it fades I'm almost certain I can hear it picking up pace again.

So , it is still unfinished , right ? Or am I wrong .

P.S. If you'd need any ambient music , I could upload some pretty good tracks .

Still a WIP. You'll hear the final version in-game.

Music is fine right now thanks.

So much for that music major at my college who said he recognized it as "Mahler's 9th symphony"...

:bump:

Updated this one a bit more, open to opinions about what works about it and what doesn't. Still quite short, as I'm considering it as a candidate for mainhall music.

Very nice.
Though I feel it's deviated quite from the original "Joshua" (aside from the few lines in the middle), which isn't a bad thing.
I'd say this version would be better than the last version as mainhall music , but the previous (the one included in BP) would be better for in-flight BGM.
That's just me.

Regardless, it's awesome.

C'mon, download, download...before my connection with linksys kicks it...
/me downloads the first version.

Yes.
/me sees the newer version.

Quote from: GTVA Colossus X-2
Well crap.
/me listens to the first version.

Wow. It sounds really peaceful. If that lady on the Menu Screen is the Admiral of the Sanctuary, I think this piece of music fits perfectly. The best part of all is that it loops like a dream.

/me downloads the so-called "Joshua III", aka. the second version and listens to it.

You know, at this rate, my MP4 will be filled with all your different pieces of Joshua II. All of them are the pinnacle of FreeSpace 2 menu music! I concur with Droid that the newer version is more fitting, but as campaign creator, you have the final say. And, to be frankly honest, I've never heard anything more beautiful than this.

Here's an idea: use one for the menu music, and the other for credits music. :)

And the last possible bit of free space in my MP3 player got filled up.

This sounds great.

The newer version (presumably the one you PMed me with?) is superior, and it's a perfect fit.

Interesting. I haven't seen Blue Planet's "menu" yet, but the second one is better.

I've filled up the remaining space on my MP4 with all three versions of Joshua II. Good stuff.

My biggest complaint is that neither one of them loops. I'm not sure if the main FS2 track does either.
Both versions I listed to have a definate beginning and an end, personally I'd prefer it if the songs blended together rather seamlessly (and yes, when people look at the Tech Room, they will hear it more than once). I mean, you can have a high point of the song, and some middle parts, etcetera, but still I'd like menu music to flow into another one much better. Instead of "oh, the songs over, here it starts again, with some major jarring inbetween"

... Obviously, Joshua 2's better.

:wtf:

There are three revisions: the original one, which is being used in Blue Planet: Age of Aquarius; the January revision; and the August revision. Which one is better? ;)

Both versions I listed to have a definate beginning and an end, personally I'd prefer it if the songs blended together rather seamlessly (and yes, when people look at the Tech Room, they will hear it more than once).

I'd like it too, but the Freespace 2 ingame music player doesn't seamlessly move from one track to another (or even loop seamlessly for that matter) without an audible pause between tracks. This makes looping songs even more jarring to listen to than if the song fades out to silence between playings.

Why haven't you released a custom music track tutorial yet Darius :hopping:

Released a what now? A tutorial on how to make music?

Tips on making arranging the custom track :)

The TBL is pretty self explanatory, thought you might have "perfected" a technique. to the War in Heaven trailer by the way. Nice new bomb effects.

I think all three versions should be used. Keep the original as battle music, use the January revision as menu music, and the August revision as credits music.

I don't see how Joshua 2 would works as menu music, considering it's very fast-paced.

The original can't be used for menu music, obviously.

However, the other two can.

Joshua: Original
Joshua 2: Original Remix
Joshua 3: Remix of the Remix.

Just so we're clear. :nervous:

I'll stick to that. :)

Original = Battle music
Remix = Menu music
Remix of the Remix = Credits music, or cutscene music

That's my opinion. :)

I'd agree with AE on this one. The original Joshua 2 is rather upbeat. Having it as a menu track or during the credits is kind of like having Fear Factory's Self Bias Resistor as an ambient track.

These are effing brilliant! You are up there with Jesper Kyd, Frank Klepacki and other amazing music creation people(sorry, tired :P)

I like Joshua3.mp3 more, but i'm having a hard time imagining it in the main menu, since the main menu for me is not meant to spoil anything. If anything the main menu music should be kinda dark and not foretelling of the story. so i think Joshuamenu.mp3 should go in the menu but it could use some more work, IMO remove the drums, they make it into this funky jam that sounds nice. but doesn't fit in the ambiance of space and the emptyness the first song shows(which is good).

this is really hard actually, cause i equally like both (save for the drums on joshuamenu) but i've come to this

Joshua3.mp3 for credits/epic moment ingame say for example the arrival of a big ship or something good that happens
Joshuamenu.mp3 for menu, but yeah. the drums in my opinion really doesn't fit. or you could change the drums into another type of drums? l

Um, Darius, just so that everyone's clear, what's the name of all three pieces?

In order to address the original question... Joshua2 is the track used in Age of Aquarius. Joshua3 is a remix of Joshua2, originally intended to become a menu track or something on War in Heaven. Joshuamenu is yet another remix, which I'd fancy having as a credits track.

Right?  :nervous:

I like the version of Joshua II in your first post. It reminds me of the music used in the X series.
