My girlfriend was most amused that you managed to literally beat me at my own game last time around.

Why do you think I rarely play BtRL online? I wrote most of the missions I'd get my arse kicked on. :D

I'll see if I can make it for the game though.

I'm adding this to my calendar.

And who's the host? Any player limits? Where's the server located?

Thanks!

Same, probably be there, probably be a bit late (I just realized my TBP version is old, gotta update to the newest one before I can log on).

I'll see what I can do.  I don't think anything will be going on at that time.

Please may  I ask that anyone who does one thing:

Reads the multiplayer instructions linked above.

As part of that you will need a clean copy of 3.4b. So if you need to download the installer again start it downloading in advance because it's a big tile. Past that I will be providing a patch to make multiplayer work nicely. Given that PXO doesn't seem to have a chat lobby it might be an idea to load up and instant messaging program in case you have problems. I can be contacted on ICQ 29118701.

There is a lobby, it's just a very recent addition so only 3.6.10 builds support it. Builds from this year have it enabled by default, but for anything from before christmas it's a command line option as it was really buggy back then.

Post by: IPAndrews on February 21, 2008, 05:32:44 am
TBP 3.4b is intended for use with 3.6.9. I was be absolutely gobsmacked if it worked with 3.6.10. I suggest everyone use 3.6.9 this evening and do their out of game chat via IM.

Post by: Shade on February 21, 2008, 06:07:26 am
True, two betas working well with each other prior to any testing for it is a bit much to hope for, I guess :p Still, I'll give it a try, 3.6.10 is might surprise you ;)
Title: Re: Weekly multiplayer sessions
Post by: Shade on February 21, 2008, 07:04:20 am
Well, I gave 3.6.10 a try, and from what I can tell it works with no problems whatsoever. All I had to do was stick the build in the TBP directory, run it, and I was able to play through the one coop multiplayer mission with no incidents. The only thing is that it connects to the 3.6.10 beta server daemon as it no longer uses fs2open_pxo.cfg, so it gets annoyed at the tables.

Here are the things I tested:

Intro works (that's really cool by the way, nice work. Makes me want to watch season 3 again).
Sound works.
Tech room works.
Multi works.
Barracks work.
Interface: There seems to be a transparency issue with the game-type icons in the server list screen for MP, otherwise everything looks beautiful.

All in all, I'm pleasently surprised. Didn't try SP, so that may still have issues, but nonetheless I think you may have to start mentally preparing yourself for getting smacked with a gob.

Just tried the first mission of the Earth-Minbari War demo, and everything went without a hitch. Well except for me forgetting to set up the controls for my SP pilot before committing, making me think everything was bugged to hell when none of the keys or buttons worked :P

For anyone that is hosting.  Please delete all FUBAR_M*.fs2 or Vidmaster_M*.fs2 missions from your data\mission folder.  Old versions in that directory will override the new ones in the VP file.

It's not a bad idea for the clients to delete them either.

Those gauntlets we played at the end this time were awesome. My arms actually hurt now from gripping the joystick too tight in all the excitement - I thought I'd learned not to do that years ago.

Aw crap, I completely forgot about this.  Btw, can we have more than one session a week, say one during the weekend?  I only ask, because I'm going to be starting a new job on March 17 and it'll be Mon-Fri. and will most likely include 8:00 GMT (which is 3:00PM for all us East Coast US folk).

Well, I guess if it isn't happening, we can make it happen. I'll throw up a server in a few minutes and see what happens :) Looks like the most recent MP patch is from the 13th, which is newer than the last one I've installed, so I'll grab that first.

Multi.log for Kara. We ran into NAT problems again when some other people started a game and we wanted to join... but did manage to get "ace" in vidmaster's major challenge just the two of us :)

[Edit] Oh, and while I remember, there's a typo left in the 2nd briefing stage of Vid's major challenge. Chosen is spelled 'chooen'. Not that anyone generally reads briefings in MP...

I probably won't make this weeks session.  I've been scheduled for yard work and drinking every nice day until it's time to put the Xmas decorations back up.  Time to pull the laptop out so I can check HLP from the great outdoors.  Yea right, play MP3's is more like it.

Here's my latest if anyone wants to test it.   FUBAR_MT24.fs2 (http://fubar4.fubar.org/tbp/multi/fubar_mt24.fs2).  It's a simple EA TvT gauntlet mission.  When it tests out OK more advanced versions will follow.

Now that 3.4b is final I have the fixed missions ready for testing as well as several new ones from Vid and myself.  B5-M-MultiPack-1.zip (http://fubar.org/TBP/B5-M-MultiPack-1.vp)  Just place in your TBP directory and make sure you don't have any rogue missions in your data\missions directory.

despite my claims, I managed to be online for about 15 minutes yesterday. Still, it was not enough to find out if any of the new missions were buggy. Since I am not able to really test multiplayer missions on my own, I always rely on what FUBAR says and on actual online play.

So...     ...any bugs? Especially in the new Encounter missions?
Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions
Post by: Shade on May 23, 2008, 05:43:57 am
We didn't really know what needed testing, so we just played a few missions for fun yesterday. Perhaps you could list the new missions so we know which to scrutinize? I might host a game tonight, and wouldn't mind doing some testing there, but unlike Fubar I don't know which are in need of it :)

the only thing we really need to take care of are these invisible game problems  :ick:

currently, many players have problems joining a game that was created when they were not in the lobby. The solution is often to try rehosting.

Unfortunately I don't think there is much we can do about that right now.  If it's not in the info at the top of the thread maybe IP can add it.

The solution is to properly sort your routers out. I've yet to see a single case of this problem where the fault wasn't completely due to NAT and improper forwarding and nothing whatsoever to do with the net code.

Anyone using the new VP should redownload it.  People were reporting problems with corruption and the new one contains some fixes.  I changed it to a zip so you will need to extract it to your TBP folder.

B5-M-MultiPack-1.zip (http://www.fubar.org/TBP/B5-M-MultiPack-1.zip)

Good session tonight. We played Ride of the Valkyries twice. You really need to work as a team to beat that one. But it's too hard for only 5 or 6 players at the moment. The mission needs to scale a bit more with number of players since the AI is useless.

I'll get back to working on it next time we have some bad weather.  I actually want to add some more bases then scale how many show up and which weapons are active based on the number of players and difficulty level.  There will also be a 4th AI wing for target practice.  They aren't entirely useless just don't use attack orders uses orders like form on my wing.  They will take some of the fire and fire back if they start taking damage.  Also a non-player AI wing may actually do what it's ordered to do.  Player AI ships do strange things at times.

Great to have a lot of new coop missions to play.  Was fun.  Get the bugs worked out and even more fun.  Sorry I couldn't stay.

One thing you might want to keep in mind as far as the red-alert stuff goes in multi is that most people will end up playing the mission individually not as part of the campaign.  Well 2 things it's never been tested.

Get the bugs worked out and even more fun.

My dynamic difficulty system makes detecting mission completion an absolute nightmare. You've got a number of fighter wings which may or may not get launched before their carrier ship which may or may not actually be present is destroyed or departed or loses it's fighterbay system.  :shaking:

That said I think I tracked down the bugs from last night.

Yeah I know. It's really a fair point. I'm thinking of pulling the idea. But if I can get the bloody thing to work it would be quite cool to not absolutely have a full team of 8 to play the campaign. For example mission 2 was balanced quite nicely for 5 players last night, and there were 3 enemy bomber wings dropped from the mission by the system  ;7

I added a 3.6.10 compatible daemon for TBP, so now you can use a 3.6.10 build for multi too.  I've attached a multi.cfg file for the TBP setup to make it easier on everyone.

hey guys...
since I have now been playing a couple of more missions, I thought about joining you guys on thursday nights... 2100 (CET) is a perfect time for me here.....

Anyway, I've seen that you guys run some 3.6.10 build... which I couldn't find anywhere... so could someone help me please? I followed the intructions in the Multiplayer Setup thread... and I could log in (with that game warden thing) and even play a mission (alone, but it worked)...
so what else do I need to do before thursday?

Why not play though? We tend to stay away fron TvT and Dogfight modes and tend to stick to humans vs AI which is much more fun. :)

nobody needs to have a specific kill ratio, skill level or anything. We are happy if we can get a game together. It's for the fun.

We also are still using the 3.6.9 build included with 3.4b.  That 3.6.10 stuff is just for testing right now and not used in the sessions.

Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on October 07, 2008, 02:24:47 pm
Currently no recent 3.6.10 builds work for TBP.  It's being worked on though.

Well my current version of the planet mission doesn't work due to some 3.6.9 bugs.  I'm still working on it and if I get a working version by then we can.  Otherwise it may be awhile before that mission is playable again.  If I have to use a 3.6.10 build to get it to work the way I want then it will be put on hold.

Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions

I ask because if I was to program a cinematic, I think it's easier if a spectator is given an observer mode without a HUD, and allows the participants to make the scene themselves. It's almost like directing a movie, but being in control of the camera.

well, it's intended. If the guys (or girls, if there are female TBP players online ;)) could beat the coop campaigns in one run, they would loose interest quickly.

yeah but to my surprise, it did run pretty well. My concerns about a new "supported" build have (almost) disappeared. Some more work and 3.6.10 should provide us with great online fun, especially since there is FINALLY a lobby.

The only thing disturbing me is that -1 kill thing...    ...I had 2 kills, fried another enemy with a pair of Venom 2s and my kills went to 1 again...

Well I was going to stick with 3.6.9 for this week unless only a few of us show up who already have Taylors 3.6.10 build or can grab it quickly.  There isn't a new Knightly build with the changes in it yet.  I was going to wait until that was out and Vid was back before going into public testing with 3.6.10.

Well I'm still waiting on that deliver that was supposed to be here by 3 so it doesn't look good for me at the moment.  Probably going to show right at game time.  If you guys want to test that build that Kara is compiling it's fine with me.  I'll grab it too just in case.

What you need to do:

Select the build in the launcher (duh)
Set the Enable 3D shockwave flag on
Set the Use models for weapons flag on (under gameplay)
Place this multi.cfg file in your tbp\data directory:  http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=52290.0;attach=7189

R. No need to use debug builds for normal gaming. Besides debug builds are a real PITA with TBP.

depends on the amout of people arriving.

I hope we are going to test Operations again tonight. Isolation works, the others are still glitchy since the update.
Fubar and myself (especially Fub) have been working on replacements.

Good session today.  Took some time to get everyone on the right config but we still got quite a few missions played.  Couple of bugs but that's to be expected.  That's why were testing.  I'm posting a screenshot of that one.  Never seen anything like it.  Oh and stats seem to be working now.  Only played one validated mission but mine saved.

pretty laggy yesterday and multiple weird bugs.

I am not sure if maybe FUB's server got things messed up
Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on November 21, 2008, 01:46:43 pm
I think you were the only one that had lag problems for the most part.  There was some toward the end of Ultimate Gauntlet but I was fighting like 50 ships at the time.  I do run backups on Thursday too which can cause spikes at times.

Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions
Post by: Angelus on November 21, 2008, 02:04:56 pm
Was a nice game yesterday, but a bit laggy sometimes ( weird thing is - and it used to happen with the old 3.6.9 BtRL/ TBP build too - there was a lot of ships and action on the screen and the ping was around 60-70, on later missions with much less action it was average 170. In the last mission 400+ have screenshots).

Stats didn't saved for me, but 3.6.10 is still in the testing phase, so it's ok.

The only real weird thing was, as i started the game with 3.6.10 multi for the first time.
The game started over and over again, i had like 20+ 3.6.10 exes running, and for each one i closed, another one popped up in the task manager, 'till my comp crashed.

Happened only once yesterday, it haven't been reported before, so i guess it's something on my end.

Post by: VERTi60 on November 23, 2008, 04:42:14 pm
I guess my stats weren't saved either, but there wasn't much to be saved, tbh.  I got too many lag hits and very little kills.

Meh, and just as I remember it's Thursday, too. Next time hopefully I'll realize what day it is while you've still got the game up :p By the way, is TBP validated yet? I see Fubar has managed to get his stats saved after a mission, but even a clean install from the DVD release still gives me the hacked tables warning.
Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on January 01, 2009, 04:10:06 pm
3.6.9 doesn't save stats.  3.6.10 seems to be working but I have only managed to get one mission in with another player.  Someone else's stats saved as well but they had 0 score.
Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions
Post by: Shade on January 01, 2009, 04:27:59 pm
That explains much, as I only tried it with the included (3.6.9) build. I'll see if 3.6.10 gives the same warning.

[Edit] 3.6.10 still complains about an invalid ships.tbl. However, when I check multi.log it shows ships.tbl as valid, so it may just be a bug that I'm getting the warning. No way to tell until I actually try playing a game with another player so that stats should to save, I suppose.

they are? Some are but not all. I am talking about all.
Title: Re: Thursday multiplayer sessions
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on January 02, 2009, 12:48:16 pm
Well we can't validate them until we test them fully in 3.6.10.  I haven't seen any major host side problems but client side still needs some testing.

Anyone going to be there this week.  I haven't hit the sack yet but should be there.  Was trying to finish the ground attack mission but ran into a few more problems so it's going to have to wait.  If there was a world record for the most Mantis reports caused by trying to make one mission this one would hold it by a landslide.

I think in the next week or two (depending on the bug situation) I'll start posting a newbie friendly zip with the exe we will be using that day, multi.cfg, and any new missions released since the second pack.  Those of us that have the multi.cfg (especially people like me with custom ones for standalones) can of course just grab the exe.

we played a few games after ..... i now realise i need to practice as fubar kicked my ass ( 3x more kills than me)

but seriously it was great to play with 6players, and the 3.6.10 really boost the graphics

FUB is probably the best TBP player since the constant testing of (my) stuff forces countless hours, especially with the debug.

Yea you think Vid's stuff is hard normally try playing it on insane in a debug build.  Makes regular insane seem easy.

I'll be there.  Same build as last week.

Nope never did try that again.  That's only a standalone option anyway.

many new players using the 3.6.9 build online. Saddly, none of them have correct forward port (just like me) for their modems.

yeah but I hate it. No lobby, connection issues, blabla.  Still, nothing we can do to make 3.6.10 stable and noob friendly as long as it isn't final.

Just had some time to spare and since FS2 keeps crashing with those mediavps, I played through FH2260 for fun.
The funny thing is, I can't believe I fredded this, it's awesome    Damn, I need to get that sequel out soon...

Funny I was just thinking about starting a new thread with 3.6.10 multi instructions.  I think there are only a couple of bugs that are holding up the 3.6.10 release.  Going to check what I have open in Mantis that is major and effects multi.  I know there's a lot in there but quite a bit of it won't be fixed for 3.6.10.  I'll test out the most recent build (if there's any real difference from the one we've been using) and if it checks out get a package ready for next week.  If a major fix occurs then I'll switch it.  This way at least when we get to 3.6.10 final we will know what the problems are and wipe out any TBP specific ones if there are any left.

Right now the way things are I can't really see any reason for 3.6.9 except 3.6.10 isn't final.  The build we are using now is a lot more stable in multi then 3.6.9 ever was.

I'll be there but I don't know if I'll be able to host.  This weeks backup is off schedule due to some drive problems and will most likely be backing up this computer while I'm playing.

I should be there this week.  Either same build as last week or the latest Knightly.  Shouldn't really matter.

Might want to grab this:  Path of Blood (http://www.fubar.org/TBP/Multi/POB.vp) beta.  Not finished yet but mission 1 and 2 are ready for full scale testing.

It was last week and the problem was because of an outage in my area the phone company didn't know about.  There was over a 200ms hop from one of their routers to the next.  In game pings were about 700.

I don't expect that to happen again.

So that's what happened.  Good to know.  I'll update that one.

Just reopened the Mantis report.  It was fixed by disabling alt-j while in glide mode but doesn't take into consideration the client's status at the time.  Understandable as it was originally reported as a single player bug.

It is. And runs like butter.  :)

Anyway, movement should be finished after this weekend. Next week, I will probably be more than occupied with constructing the new desk and relocating the furniture. And after that, I have to get the Internet running properly.
