Alright, HLP needs YOU. :) We're basically out of funds in the PayPal account (we've got $1.72 in there), which means that if the check for the banner ad income either isn't sufficient to cover the monthly server cost, or is late in arriving at its destination, there's no reserve money to keep the server running.
So, I humbly request that if you can spare some cash, you do so with the utmost haste. :)
Donate here. Please? Pwetty pwease?? (http://www.hard-light.net/index.php?id=3)
Thank you!
-
Dang that was fast! Thanks!
-
$1.72?
You could have warned us before...is there a way to monitor the amount of money?
Is it possible to donate money from here? As far as I know, PayPal works for everything.
-
Give it a try - can't hurt. :)
-
Will do it in the immediate future :)
-
How much do the monthly fees cost anyway?
-
I don't remember offhand, but it was along the lines of $100+/mo.
-
how much space does the site use, and how much traffic/month on avrage?
-
Not sure... you'd have to ask MatthewPapa about that. We're sharing a dedicated server with GameWarden. The main strain is actually not on bandwidth of server space, but on CPU cycles. The forums are VERY active and demanding.
-
I don't remember offhand, but it was along the lines of $100+/mo.
Found the amount - $108/m.
-
I hate to be this way, but.
How much do you have in ad revenue? I know adsense lets you check.
Here, have 10 bucks, regardless.
-
I'm recharging my paypal account right now, should take 3-5 days for the money to transfer from my checking. I'll get to you then.
-

The ad revenue goes to MP; last I heard from him, it was around $60-70/month. The problem is, sometimes the check from Google doesn't get there in time, since they only send it if the income has passed $100, and then only on a certain date of the month. So if we get $70 income in March, for example, and the check is potentially sent on the 5th of the following month, April, then unless the remaining $30 came in in those 5 days, the check will not be sent until the next 5th of the month, in May (presuming that by then the ad income has passed $100).
Ergo, we need a fallback cache of funds for when "the check's in the mail". ;)
-
Hey guys. I'd give 10 bucks but i don't have a credit card. Can I mail it to you monthly? This website is great and you guys are.....welllll...ok. Please get back to me ;7 ;7
-
I just sent in $20, thanks for keeping HLP and GW around for so many years.
-
You guys rock. You are keeping the dream alive! Major thanks to each and every one of you who donated!!
-
Guys, we do need a SCUMM Buck-o-MeterTM ASAP...
I hope the emergency is solved
:p :p :p :p :p
-
Donated. You guys rock, let's keep it up.
-
:welcome: and thanks for the donation. :)
-
here... have a month

-
Showoff!
-
Stealth. . . . .
We're not worthy, We're not worthy!!!!!!
-
il pitch in $3.50
-
I'll add an undisclosed percentage. I just need to set up a paypal account. Check that my balance still has a few zeroes. And get to a pc with a paypal HLP link :)
-
here... have a month
you gave $108?
naa i was just kidding. i just said "here, have a month", like... as a joke.
i can't afford that =P
-
You're exempt Steak, you're the architect. You created the HLPtrix with *cough forgot cough* and we're now in our third reincarnation. Which makes . . . . . . . . .snail, Neo :wtf: ?
I think i need sleep.
-
Yeah. i think you do. I didn't understand any of that.
-
*pssst haloboy*
stealth invented HLP. And his nickname is steak.
-

Err, no.... Setekh cofounded HLP (along with Thundifireth). And his nickname is Steak. Stealth had nothing to do with it.
-
Waaaah i was just nodding off and i realised it was Setekh, i grabbed my phone to double post and clear my name. But i'm too late. :(
Time for a shameful noobish exit. :warp:
-
S'ok. You're recovering. You can blame it on the drugs.
-
I would donate like $50-100 but...I don't work and I don't think my mom would let me donate to this type of thing.
Sorry Turey, Goober5000 and everyone who works hard...
HLP and FS forever!!!!
-
Well, I've just bought a car and I got a really sweet deal on it, so here's a nice fat $30 to keep you going. Thanks for being around.
-
Err, no.... Setekh cofounded HLP (along with Thundifireth). And his nickname is Steak. Stealth had nothing to do with it.
that's what you think
:drevil:
lol jk... yeah man, Stealth, Setekh, similar, but unfortunately I can't take credit for this. As sandwich said, it was Setekh and R128Thunder (aka Thunder, aka Kalfireth), from the VBB, that founded it :)
-
No credit card, no checking account. :( I'll donate next time--I should have a CC, DC, and CA by then.
-
15 $ on the way....
-
~$10 coming right up
-
Gortef... did you used to fly in FS1 online till PXO shut down?
-
10$ for you!
-
you know i bet you could write it off on your taxes...
*runs*
-
I never understood what writing it off meant....
-
Evading? I use the term "written off" to mean the same thing as "it's good as gone". I'm out for the day tomorrow doing some light physio so i may well pop into a net cafe and set up paypal etc.
-
btw.....one idea how we could increase the motivation for donating in general...:
if it is possible we should add some kind of counter to the donation page. means we show some kind of balance sheet showing the monthly cost for the server and then the time remaining for the pay as well as the actual amount of money on the paypal account.....
-
I'd love to. The only problem is, I can't figure out how to have a counter showing the PayPal balance. If anyone knows of one....?
-
maybe you can ask paypal?! they should know ;)
-
yeah ive seen it before.
but do you really have a number you want to get to? or just make it by every month.. you know?
-
example. but seems they made it by hand. but nice idea with the donation badge :)

Ask ISOHunt.com.
-
ok money cleared, take some sandy. :D
-
:eek2:
-
:eek2:
I predict a massive amount of money has been donated.
-
By the way, those of you running AdBlocker or some other form of blocking ads can help us a ton by not blocking ads on HLP... ;)
-
What's the point? I'm not gonna be clicking any of those "PLAY A F*CKING MMORPG NOW!!!" ads.
-
I think it counts for something after a certain number of impressions.
-
do you get money for just clicking on adds? If so, ill go click crazy.
Do you?
-
Don't do that. It'll just register as false clicks and might cause trouble down the road.
-
there was an announcement a while back about how not to repeatedly click the ads, IIRC.
-
Yeah. Try to give the impression that you're just browsing through the forums, when suddenly "Ah, that advertisement looks interesting. I think I shall click it". Doing some heavy click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click raises suspicions and can
open the gates of Hell cause problems and money loss and whatnot.
-
...You mean how i just clicked a star wars ad? :P
Here's the deal. I'll click one ad every week. How's that? :P
-
For every click it cost the company putting the ad up money according to how much it appears... or at-least that's how it works with google. I.E. a Ad will appear more if they payed $1.00 a click rather than $0.01
-
No false clicking. No schedules. I got my AdSense account permanently banned because of false clicks. The only thing we're asking is not to block the ads. Don't go committing to clicking once per whatever. Just don't. Click when your interest is piqued, and only then.
-
To clarify, Sandwich got his HLP AdSense account blocked because people on HLP were trying to rig the clicking.
So don't even think about false clicking. You'd be risking the financial health of the forum, and in my opinion we'd be fully justified in permabanning anyone who tries it.

Ah. Well then I wont to that. But I did click on the Old BSG add, And I'm enjoying free episodes of A great show. Never seen these before... :)
-
I did go for a few rounds, not that many though but yes (I wasn't that active).
-
Money en route.
HLP is the bastion for Freespace! :D
-
I usually click ads cause they're so retarded I have to see what they are.
-
Don't you like it when someone's advertising scheme works flawlessly? :D
-
Yup.

I think Sandwich made that pretty clear. But just to make things VERY clear:
Sandwich got HIS ADSENSE BANNED!!111 because YOU PEOPLE[/i] kept mass-clicking!!!!!!!!!
-
Here's $10 to help keep this great comminuty striving. :)
-
I think Sandwich made that pretty clear.
I just wanted to make sure nobody interpreted it as Sandwich getting his personal AdSense account blocked because he personally was making false clicks, is all. That doesn't convey the same sense of importance. :)
-
I just wanted to make sure nobody interpreted it as Sandwich getting his personal AdSense account blocked because he personally was making false clicks, is all.
That would be stupid. :p
And yes, to clarify, from the horse's mouth:
My personal AdSense account was being used for one purpose: HLP ad income. But when ads on HLP got falsely clicked, my personal account got permanently terminated.
-
well since HLP is getting paid for out of your personal account, it would only make sense that it was your personal Adsense account.
So give us a heads up. Since you made this thread, what amount of donations have you seen?
-
I was just about to donate, but I wound up giving my money to Rick Roll instead. :D
-
Well, y'all have come through real well, I must say. Current tally is $548.49. :eek2:
Looks like we'll be around for quite a while yet... ;)
-
20$ from Switzerland  Keep up the good work.
-
So...everyone just gave this forum another 5.5 months? How long has this thread been open?
Though I can't donate yet - except for a measly 30c or whatever an ad pays if I click on it...
I'm only joined to 2 forums - GW and HLP - it would be crap if one of them shutdown, but I think someones have given HLP a new afterburner
-
So...everyone just gave this forum another 5.5 months? How long has this thread been open?
Two weeks or so? ;)
-
give it another couple of weeks and you'll get a year's worth... then you can shut it down till next year, when you can re-open the thread ;)
-
I cannot donate, however much I want to, but I have to say a big huge thanks to those who did, and Sandwich himself for taking this up to himself to ensure HLP is around. It was the only home that Freespace fans have had since the end of the ol' boards and has thrived and will keep on thriving.
Nothing of that would be possible if Sandwich wasn't around to take it upon himself to do what had to be done. This way we will get to enjoy magnificent mods like the mod for BSG, down the road.
Thank you, thanks A LOT.
-
Don't thank just me - all the admins and mods have done their part. As have all of you guys - we're just supplying the platform; you guys are carrying it forward. :)

If someone could PM me the hosting requirements (CPU/RAM/disk and traffic), I may be able to help out. I have a box that's sitting unused, and I work at a colo/hosting facility, so if the traffic levels are reasonable it might work...

This is the HLPBB--nothing is reasonable. Seriously though--a lot of the cost of a server comes in maintaining an internet connection with a static IP. Otherwise, you could click the link for the HLPBB and end up at some random other site, or have a dead link. Many ISPs won't give a static IP in a standard package, or, if they do, ban hosting a server. I looked into getting a T1 once--$300+/month.

I work at a colo/hosting facility, also known as a datacenter. A static IP and Internet connectivity is NOT going to be a problem :) As long as the 95th percentile traffic levels are 500kbps or less, I think we could get it in here.
-
Pfff. Just get a ****in' dedicated server from FastHosts.
They're only like £50/month. Even I can afford that ****.
-
I threw in 10 bucks, I've been systematically sponging content off this site for like 3 years now. :) I don't care what hosting solution you use HLP, just don't go away!
-
So how much money has been donated total?
-
Probably over 9000$.

Just to clarify, is this something you could work out a nice deal for HLP to pay for? ie, it's a lot better to have something you're paying for (even if it's a negligeable amount) and a contract, then to end up having your company be bought off by another company and have the new boss say, "sorry, but I don't do freebies, we're shutting you down." With a contract, you would at least have a warning if that happened.
-
I don't see any need to block ads unless they're Flash-driven. Firefox works horribly with Flash applets. :mad2:
-
Donated 20 $.
Best Wishes to you all,
Fabian

xD Flashblock.
Try AdBlock Plus sometime too. I use it to block Flash advertisements on FilePlanet, as well as on every other site I visit which has Flash ads. :D :drevil:
-
Well, I haven't been around a lot as of late but just for the record I've thrown a few chips into the pot. Thank the Union for the current CDN/US exchange rate.
-
So how much money has been donated total?
$858.11 in the PayPal account. Probably means that $900 was donated all told (PayPal takes off a percentage of each transaction).
-
8 Months.
Not bad I say
-
Have $20. I did my part in the crusades, you know.
Mmm, 1/5 of a month.
If you fix the missing thrusterglow bug and add the beam charge-up effect to the 3.6.10 Beta VPs, I'll send you another $20.

Have a Nice Summer, Sandwich.

I gave him a summer's-worth (three months).

Good man. Wish I had something to give.

No, he gave him 330 odd dollars.

Ah, but that doesn't count since he was banned by karajorma.
-
Nah, he was banned by Goob. He deserved it though, he wouldn't make an update.
-
Nah, he was banned by Goob.
Well, actually (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,51250.msg1036659.html#msg1036659)...
If this wasn't the donation drive thread, I'd propose a lock.
-
Wow. When I originally read that, I just skimmed through and thought that Goob had banned both of them.
