I remember some moderator making an extensive post about how beams used so much are only for + Post counts and abusers will be punished and some stuff.

They (is it we for me now? ) did that because it was being abused - you'd have 15 replies to a thread with nothing but the welcome beam. As long as you use it in moderation, and preferably if you add an actual post after it, you'll be fine.

It wasn't so much the use of the beams that was the problem, there seemed to be a competition to see who could beam the most 'newbs', which led to an entire Jean-Michelle Jarre concert everytime we got a new member.

Umm, that can be mostly blamed on one person... *scratches head*  I forgot who.  Kept on going on about his quest for domination or something like that.  Ah, that's right, I found it.  Mobius.  He was being quite the twerp about it, but I just thought it was funny, but the admins didn't.
