Looking for a copy of Homeworld... yes, the first one
I never managed to play Homeworld, despite trying out the second game (and getting thoroughly thrashed in mission 4, so bad in fact that I gave up and decided to try to find the irst game so the learning curve wasn't so steep).  Now I'm looking for a copy, but it seems all I can find are a few shady US/UK retailers through Amazon.

Anyone know where I could get a copy that's a little more likely to be hassle-free?  I tried Direct2Drive and exhausted my Google-fu.

Well, I own the game but the actual CD is back home. I'm not gonna drive all the way there just to get it. :D

I gave up on Mission4 several times before I cracked it. Three things: Salvage Corvettes, Heavy Corvettes and Attack Bombers.

Re: Looking for a copy of Homeworld... yes, the first one
Homeworld 2 isn't the second Homeworld game despite it's name. But Cataclysm's fourth mission is piss easy, so who knows.

Oddly, I really liked Cataclysm, in spite of the apparently negative community reaction.

Re: Looking for a copy of Homeworld... yes, the first one
Cata wasn't a bad game, but the story felt far more generic the the original, and the villian certainly was.  Plus, salvage, which was a huge, huge part of HW1, was more or less nonexistent in Cata.  Even if the beast ships weren't completely uncappable, the hard fleet support limit and nerfed salcaps would've trashed it but the beast itself made the point completely moot.

You could salvage Beast ships somehow...I remember because they'd come out of your hangar bay all white.

But I agree, the nerfed salvage was a negative change.

Awww, come on, Cataclysm was great. Little ragtag fleet vs. crazy Borg virus monstrosity is win. The guy driving the command ship was a BAMF. Sure it was more cliche than HW1 but it was a cliche done really well, kind of like FreeSpace.

I remember that Salvage Corvettes got beastified if they tried to dock with one of their ships, so I doubt it.

Yeah, I also really enjoyed Cataclysm. It's not a classic like HW1, but that's a tough act to follow.

You would be correct.

I could find a torrent but I'd rather not download it somewhat-less-than-legally.

I'll keep looking.  The Ebay link isn't bad, but I was hoping to find an actual Canadian or US retailer.

No, I remember now -- you could get the Infection Vaccine upgrade that let your workers salvage Beast ships. The image of them coming out of the Command Ship's hangar all white, as if they'd been scrubbed or purged, was very striking.

I really didn't like the Plasma Guns upgrade that came about in the endgame, though -- it pretty much made strike craft useless.

Re: Looking for a copy of Homeworld... yes, the first one
It's been a long time since I've played HW2 but I think I remember it being especially difficult because it essentially penalizes you for doing well in a previous mission. Each mission overly scales with what you enter the mission with, so for a couple missions it's actually much easier if you blow up your whole fleet before u hyper out :P

Re: Looking for a copy of Homeworld... yes, the first one
Yeah, I remember one of the things that really bugged me in HW2 was the amount of fleet turnover. What I mean is, in HW1 a lot of the ships I built survived till the end of the game. Sure I lost my fair share of frigates and a few heavier things, but I'm pretty sure the majority survived.

Now in HW2, on some of those later missions, I would be constantly building and losing ships until the ships I had started the mission with were long dead, along with several fleets' worth of ships inbetween. Now I understand that you could keep harvesting resources and building new ships, but where do you get the people to pilot them if they keep dying?
