Grues. I guess that makes me a bit old, but they were really scary when I was a kid.

That list has very little in it.
Quake's fiends and shamblers. Especially in the mission packs where you have packs of shamblers teleporting around you.

I know one monster that is a few thousand helluvas more scarry than everything mentioned in that article.

It hides in a mysterious nebula in a Pegasus.

Mustn't forget the Chryssalid, either. The Grue is all well and good, but you never actually see it (though you do get eaten by it). The Cryssalid, however. Oh man... just knowing one of those might be around would instantly put me into a "Nuke it from orbit" frame of mind.

Whatever it is, it will be a leggy sort of spider/arachnid. I've got a terrible arachnophobia for those things.

Pyramid Head in the article probably ranks as top 2. I've NEVER played that game, but the mere sight and description of it makes me already imagine it, and nothing is quite scarier than a monster whose face is unidentifiable.

Crysalids, as in X-Com's Crysalids, as in I dont care where you are on the ****ing map give it every burst round you have, just kill it, dead, now, I dont care that you have a rocket launcher and it is 4 squares away from you, DDDDIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.  They really should have included a flame thrower for those things, cook it inside that damned armoured shell.  They made the demo hell.

about the article I had to lol at the shivan picture.

also what about Duke Nuckem 3D's octobrains?

SKAARJ ! (http://unreal.wikia.com/wiki/Skaarj)

sure they are tough suckers to kill at times but tbh even in the first game they were only scary in that time when a corridor goes dark and you are locked in with one early on.  UT killed the scariness of the Skaarj and by the time Unreal 2 came around they were mass baddies even the big ones were at most minor boss prestige

Agreed, when the game basically tells you she's going to appear, it's not scary.

Post by: Scourge of Ages on June 09, 2011, 08:27:06 pm
Also agreed, Alma's not all that scary. I think in the whole first game, there was only one time when she could actually hurt you. The rest of the time she was just popping up and being creepy, but not nearly as scary as those stupid floaty ghost things that pop up out of nowhere and can flay you in seconds. (These guys: http://fear.wikia.com/wiki/Nightmares)
Also, the Tentaculat (http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Tentaculat) from Terror From the Deep took everything terrifying about the Chryssalid and gave it the ability to swim above you out of sight until it drops on your soldier and tentacle-rapes him to zombification.

A creeper or skeleton appearing around a corner when you didn't expect it.

Not really scary monsters on their own, but Minecraft is the sort of game where anything can happen and usually will... the fact that none of it is scripted makes it more terrifying.

Wendigo ambush in a dark room with ice covered floors and lots of bottomless pits to slide into found in Hexen Beyond Heretic.  Sure now, like Doom, its pretty silly but back in the day it was the ****.
Title: Re: Scariest gaming monsters

alma was unsettling.  the fact she doesn't hurt you is irrelevant; when you're already tense and you turn a corner to see a girl who liquefies people with her brain rushing at you like a crab it tends to make you swear loudly and empty your clip at the floor where she was a second before.
fettel was a bit creepy too.  the nightmares were scary when they popped out the first time, but after that were just ****ing annoying  there was no kind of suspense/buildup or anything else, they just warped in front of you and fking killed you.  the spectres in FEAR 2 were generally creepy, with one particular sequence of downright terrifying.

running into a tri-gen up close is never fun.  the first encounter with the flood in HALO was good, but they also became annoying rather quickly.

Man, now I'm reminded of going through Ravenholme in HL2 and hearing the howls of those fast headcrab zombies.  The speed alone was enough to make them scary...they were just on you before you could do anything about it.  Yeesh.

You kids have no idea what scary is. I remember when I was still young, just turned 60. The Austro Hungarian Union had just collapsed and Doom 1 was the scariest game in the world.
Be afraid, for the infernal Tomato of Doom is upon you!

The problem with Alma is that she is and was then already a tried and tested concept, particularly in Japanese and Japanese influenced horror so to many people she just becomes the creepy gir (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CreepyChild)l.  The game makes said in many interviews that F.E.A.R. was inspired by the likes of the Ring

Some Doom monsters were scary back in the day, but I remember bursting out in laughter whenever I saw the Cacodemon. I mean you're playing a game that tries to scare you with bad monsters, you turn a corner and.. you explode in laughter. A floating tomato? Really? :D

Cacodemons looked much better in lurid red ;) And Demons in bright pink, reminded me of Warhammer 40K Daemons with that colour scheme ;)

The Lost-Soul spitting thing was from Doom 2, and if we are going to include that then Revenants probably win the prize for that one, Arch-Viles were pretty nasty too.

Edit: Cacodemons were 3 shots on a shotgun, the minute you heard that hissing noise, hitting 3 was kind of a built in reaction :)

Barnacles (the concept of having my head chewed like that  :shaking:) Just..........eeek!

Those floor teeth things from Another world, and the initial beasty thing from Another world too.

Resident Evil one dogs.  I projected my early teenage love of Jill Valentine into a sense of over-protection. So every time she was in jeapordy i was all liek ONOZ IMMA SAD AND SCARED :C

Pyramid Head and the dummys from Silent Hill 2 were FREAKIN SCARY.

i found fear was ridiculously stock. environments were cliche, offices, construction sites, warehouses, like ive never seen that before. im glad the game only cost me a quarter. it also runs like ****, the ratio between graphics quality to performance was pretty lame, its not like the idtech3 engine that will give you 60 fps in an extremely detailed environment on full settings with mediocre hardware. some years ago i was staring down a bargain bin trying to decide whether i wanted to buy prey or fear. glad i bought prey, thought that game was more about grossing you out and making you nauseous than actually trying to scare you. it did have some environments that were somewhat original. really im not a big fan of the horror genre. i grew up on scary movies, by the time i was 10 there wasnt any movie that could scare me, and i guess thats carried over to games.

That invisible demon from Doom used to scare the piss out of me.

I also agree about Ravenholm in HL2.

Water demon was really scary in Amnesia, but so was everything else about that game, including walking.

I don't think any particular thing was scarier than others in Another World/Out of This World, but the whole experience was frightening because you were so powerless. Even when you had a gun you were still really vulnerable, death could always be waiting for you on the next screen or even run in to the one you were on!

Hmm scary monsters in a game?

Can't think of anything particularly scary, the closest I now recall is the Battlelord boss from the end of the shareware level of Duke3D. And even him isn't scary, but hearing that roar in the later episodes meant busy and tedious moments coming ahead!

Oh, God. I'd almost forgotten. First time I played OOT and ran across any three of those undead freakshows, I damn near crapped my pants.

FEAR is fighting Floormasters, not knowing the tricks or having quite enough skill to keep them from multiplying, and knowing that eventually, you're gonna goof, and that rotting, scrabbly hand is gonna be at your throat. Then you'll have more Floormasters to fight, which means yet more disembodied hell-spawned hands!

FEAR is fighting Redead without the Sun's Song- I was absolutely mortified to get near them because of that Godforsaken shrieking! If I didn't need to kill them, believe you me, I ran past their hideous masked gaze like a little girl. No, I am not at all ashamed to admit that- not running fast enough invariably meant moldy zombie rape!

FEAR is the first time you fight Dead Hand. Goddamned Dead Hand. Really, where should I start? Perhaps with the freakishly long, rotting arms that grow from the floor of skulls like some Satanic vegetation? Or maybe we should talk about the main body of the creature, a mutilated blob of flesh with bloody mockeries of stumps and that worm-ridden face atop an emaciated, charnel serpent?

****. Not even Dead Space ignited my KILL IT WITH FIRE instinct as much as those creatures did. I vote Turambar wins this thread.

Half-Life's Ichthyosaur is one of the few game creations that actually made me jump.

System Shock 2 is an entire game that made me jump.  I STILL maintain it has the scariest atmosphere of any game I've played (although Transcend is right up there *props to Ransom*).  However, none of the individual enemies were that terrifying... it was more the fact that you have 3 rounds left in your pistol, which is at maintenance condition 1 and ready to break, are out of psi hypos, have half health, know that you have four corridors to go before you reach the damn elevator, and can hear one of the female hybrid-bot mothers clanking along around the corner up ahead.  Hydroponics was the worst.  That game's monster respawn, weapons maintenance, and requirement to spend points to even USE a weapon to begin with were absolutely unforgiving.

You can sneak by all of them by holding the spin slash button and moving past them.  They don't go after you or freeze you if you hold it.

And then the Sun's Song, which you can get before you even go up Death Mountain Trail for the first time makes them the most pushover enemies in the game just about.  Especially since you don't have to wait until it cuts out to refresh the effect.

Floormasters are harder, yes, but just hookshot the bastards and it one hits them, you don't have to get close, and you can kill them before they get big again.

But I will say Dead Hand can just go off itself.  Hate those guys.

I'm astonished no one's mentioned the Replica Assassins from F.E.A.R. yet. Forget Alma, those things were spawned straight from the pits of hell...

Nearly invisible, jump around like Spider-Man on crack, can kill you in like two hits, and there's that creepy electrocution thing they do if you happen upon one before it notices you... They're tied with Fast Zombies for being the only game enemy that has legitimately frightened me.

that electric arc noise gives me the shivers, because it makes me think one just dropped right behind me from the ceiling and is about to separate my head from my body.  but in an actual fight with one, no worries.  it didn't take me long to learn to just stand still and scissor kick them when they rush at you.  and of course this is all the FEAR 1 assassins.  the ones in 2 were just laughable.

other than the shadow temple/bottom of the well for general atmosphere, nothing in OOT was really scary/creepy for me.
Title: Re: Scariest gaming monsters

Well, I didn't say they were scary because they were hard to fight. Slo-mo + shotgun to the face = dead assassin, every time. (In fact that works for just about everything short of Powered Armor.)

I can't deny that their introduction in FEAR 1 was just about the scariest thing I've ever seen in gaming, though. Ten minutes of wandering around a giant office building and nothing attacks you, and then all of a sudden... HOLY **** INVISIBLE ELECTRIC NINJAS! :shaking:

I'll give FEAR credit for one thing, it knows how to build a damn creepy atmosphere.

I don't know, bloodsuckers were more dangerous than scary, although hearing their roar in the middle of the forest could raise the blood pressure. Well, once I was checking out a stash in between some buildings, and one of those bastards decloaked and attacked when I couldn't see anything. I was so startled I've used entire magazine, even though it was dead after few bullets. In other situations they were smart, flanking and partly invisible, but more unsettling than scary.

If you want to see really scary version of Bloodsuckers, try Nightstalkers: Shadows of Namalsk. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=118731
They come at you out of nowhere, kill in few hits, take a lot of bullets to kill and are faster than you. Coupled with the atmosphere of the mod, these things can give you a heart attack.
Also, cloaked Drillers from the first Descent. Other bots were capable of being scary, but hearing a whine of a Driller and not seeing one could be the scariest thing in the entire game.

Lickers in RE2 used to scare me. That sound they make  :shaking:
<edit> Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnVcZeN7A4g) for effect.

Birkin with his slow walking, don't care if you shoot at me -SLIDING CLAW SWIPE routine was also quite intimidating.

Pyramid head was pretty freaky as well.

I don't really get what's scary about Ravenholme. It's seems almost cartoonish and is basically a playground where you kill zombies in creative ways with the gravity gun.

It was scary at first, built up a great atmosphere, but yeah, after a while it lost the scary aspect. Interestingly enough, it doesn't have that last 'e', it's "Ravenholm". My name comes from before Half Life 2, when I was obsessed with Morrowind (my chronic character was a dark elf spellsword called Ravenholme)

hmm, tough one, as not many games i found the monsters scary, but if i had to choose some i would go with

The Bruiser brothers from Doom, (the 2 Barons of hell you face at the end of Knee deep in the dead) When i first heard their screams i jumped, bare in mind i was only young kid at the time, and how tough they were. They there was the CyberDemon.

The Pyramid Head from Silent hill, wasn't that scary but most of his appearances were just totally f**ked up esp that scene where it rapes the mannequin monster.

Alma from Fear 1, but i think thats more down to scripted events.

The Zombie (infested) crew members in System Shock 2, just creepd me out, when they charged at you askin you to kill them or run.

Giygas is the nuclear option of scary game enemies. He's not even capable of being in the contest - it's like when someone asks who the most powerful superhero is and some kid calls out Chuck Norris or Superman or some other infallible entity. It's not fair to the other guys in the running.

That said, Giygas is horrifying as all hell.

So you want scary huh? Well here's some that when I met them, bricks were shat:

AvP Facehuggers: Bearing in mind that I was but a small child when I first saw Alien and Aliens (the medlab scene still haunts my dreams), and that in itself left a 'OMFG MOTION ON MY SENSOR, BURN EVERYTHING' reaction.

Any and ALL ghosts from Project Zero (Fatal frame): Sinister teleporting dead kids, 'nuff said.

SA-X: From Metroid fusion. Those moments stuck in that vent, waiting for her to leave the corridor, took days off my life.

The guy at the desk in Leasure suit Larry:...

The Arrogant Man/The Prince/Cabadath: From the Chzo mythos (mainly Trilby's notes).

Transcendent: *Whimper*

The ***** from Dead Space 2: Sudden and intense QTEs are NOT my forte.

Dekker: Especially when equipped with a maxim or in RTS's as an ally with teamlock turned off.

I know there are a couple of others, but I seem to have repressed them too deeply so I'll just sit over in this nice, safe corner and cower from all the remembered terror.  :shaking:

That sound the Fusion Hulks made was pretty cool, but their speed and rate of fire meant they weren't even close to matching the level of scary of the Drillers. Get a couple of them in a room and half your shields would be gone before you had time to crap your pants after hearing that telltale whine. Red Hulks were pretty bad too, especially in narrow tunnels. It was hard enough dodging a homer as it was, having nowhere to run was just OH****!

His mind was destroyed by his incredible power and Pokey wasn't his servant but discovered his lair accidentally and ran away when Giygas was unleashed. You cannot grasp the true form of his attack!

Dunno about you, but the thought of a chubby stupid guy with a spider mech waltzing around is somewhat worrisome. The thought that someone would intentionally use such a person as a servant moreso.

He was (assumed that he was Giegue) a telepathic alien lifeform sent to conquer earth after raised by two captured men only to be beaten by the lullaby his human mother sang for him as a child (cause he wasn't able to fight along and then got beaten by Ninten). I find this story really disturbing. Why he (presumed) transformed to Giygas is a riddle. But that blurry cloud looks horrifying and it's gigantic. And it's red! He can be whatever he wants but he even doesn't know that he exists - so there is no true form.

If this isn't scary in any way to you, then... go play Transcend ;)

Or read through this psychoanalysis of Giygas. Awesome stuff!

I think that's the very reason Giygas is so scary to some people, because he's the last thing you'd expect to find at the end of such a tale.

Well, that and there's the fact that Giygas = Azathoth - tentacles, more or less.

But I will add another RESIDENT EVIL thing......the Nemesis, scared the living **** out of me in RE2 (2nd playthrough as Leon) when it smashed through the RPD wall, that cctv moment by the cable car, as obvious and predictable as it was, also induced a gibber moment. Wrong. That's actually what Giygas looks like in-game. You never fight a physical body of his because he doesn't have one. He's transcended time and become the very manifestation of evil.
