Crashes at first Mission
Hi,
I just installed the WC Saga Prologue. As a fan of the original WC Series, I am really excited of this remake.
Unfortunatly I always crash in the first mission when I have to Autopilot back to the Carrier.
I tried different sound and grafic settings but its still crashing :(

Here is what I got in the errorlog.txt (only posting it once, tehre are multiple of this entries in the log):

My System: Athlon XP 2800+, 1280MB Ram, GeForce 7600GT with 256MB, SBLive! 5.1, Win XP SP2 with DirectX9c  from Sept 2006, nvidia drivers from March 2007

Game is working fine even on 1280x1024x32 and all on High and AAx4. Till the point where it crashes :(.

As other games (Spellforce 2, WoW, X3 Reunion) are working, i do not think it is the hardware (Ram).

Any suggestions/hints?

Re: Crashes at first Mission
Odd... I was going to ask about the same thing. Lol, I just discovered Saga two days ago. I'd been waiting for a remake from a large-scale corporate studio for so many years, and I must say this is a spectacular project. When I went through Prologue I had the same crash, but when I replayed it the problem didn't resurface. It happened immedeately after I engaged the autopilot to return to TCS Wellington. There are just a few hiccups it would seem - there was another crash right after taking off on the 4th mission (when I re-opened the minimized program I got a snowy, purple screen and looping 2 seconds of music clip and had to pull the plug on the PC :p), but the occasional problem is to be expected. Maybe it's a different problem than I had though... Faldaar and I have different hardware. No crashes for me since I finished the campaign and started replaying it a bit.

Btw, as a side-question... is the inversion option in player controls supposed to be disabled in Prologue? Hehehe, it's so much harder to manuever and aim when one is used to the opposite setting as the default. Thx in advance of a reply, and I hope people can help you troubleshoot Faldaar. :D

@Faldaar : When exactly does this problem occur ? On the way back to the wellington (at which distance then ? ) or immediately when you activate the autopilot ? Also important, can you reproduce the error at the same time ?

Re: Crashes at first Mission
The crashes allways occurs 1 or 2 seconds after I press Alt+a for the Autopilot. After pressing Alt+A I hear the "normal Windows error sound" and 1 second later i am at the desktop with the Windows error message where I can send a report to M$.
I will retry a few times later and take a look at distance, time, etc.

Will report details asap

Re: Crashes at first Mission
Hm, strange. If it happens so shortly after pressing alt-a, then it's not what I thought to be the problem. I was suspecting either the vanish-SEXP for the corvette or the reapearance-SEXP for the battlegroup, but both happens much later.

I remember someone else having this problem, but he weren't able to reproduce it and it appears to be very seldom :( Stupid idea, but please make an update from your graphics driver.

How's the asteroidfield, any problem with that ? Maybe not visible or far distant asteroids and extreme slowdowns ? You might want to try to install the asteroid fix then

Re: Crashes at first Mission
No problems with the asteroid fields. All running smooth.

And I just finished the first mission without crash :)
After the fight with the corvette distance to TCS Wellington is around 50000 (+- 1000) and game crashes just after pushing Alt+a. The last time I tried to get a little closer and waited til the distance is around 35000 and then pushed Alt+a and ... *drums* ... it didn't crash.

I will let you know if there are any problems in the next missions. Can't await to play them.

Re: Crashes at first Mission
I have the same error and I can reproduce it.  It happens a few seconds after I engage Autopilot to the Wellington and at around 29990 or so left it crashes.  Every time it crashed it happened at the same point in the game.  I really want to keep playing but I can never get passed that one part without it crashing.

Re: Crashes at first Mission
You know, I think I had this problem as well.  However, it only happened once for me so I assumed it was a random glitch...

Re: Crashes at first Mission
As I suspected it's the change-ship-class SEXP that is executed at this time. It's really strange that this causes problem to a few people. Maybe it's a problem of memory usage, since I switch all ship model back at the same moment.

@Onion :  Let's try this here : http://wcsaga.hard-light.net/team/Starman/downloads/prol_mission01.rar

In your installation folder, create a "data" folder. Inside the data-folder, create a " missions" folder and copy the two files included into the rar into it.

I have split up the changing-Sexp, so that now the half of the ships is switched back at 30.000 klicks, and the other half at 20.000 klicks. Maybe not perfectly balanced for optical purpose, but when it works out, I can improve it a little for the upcoming patch.

Please try it, and tell me if it still happens.

I do not think that we will need change-ship-class at all, but that is a different matter :)

I don't think so either, since it must be totally dependend on the users machine. I had never problems with that, and I'm certainly the one who played the missions the most, in fact I can't see them anymore :D

Re: Crashes at first Mission
Thanks, I'll give it a shot now and see if it works.  I'll edit this post and let you know if it works or not.

Edit:

It worked!  I managed to get back to the Wellington without any type of problems with those two files you gave me.  Thanks Starman, much appreciated!   :D

Re: Crashes at first Mission
Glad it worked, then it must really be a memory problem. We will have to take care of that in the main campaign, so that the game get's even more polished. :)

But honestly, the same feature is used in Mission 2 and 4, and also the bomber sim mission. Pls report back, when the error occurs there too.

autopilot implementation does not use change-ship-class anymore, so we have one problem less :)
