Title: 3.6.16 multiplayer setup instructions - Games Thrusday 8PM GMT
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on January 27, 2009, 04:34:43 pm
Before you start:
First is to download and install Zathras 2.6 following the instructions from this thread:  http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83412.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83412.0)
If you don't have them get the second mission pack here:  B5-M-MultiPack-1.zip (http://www.fubar.org/TBP/B5-M-MultiPack-1.zipl)
Extract the newly downloaded archives into your main TBP folder.  The files are included in their correct sub-folders.
Create an account on FS2netD (http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/main.php?mod_select=tbp) if you don't already have one (FS2, BTRL, WC Saga, Etc work for TBP as well).
Make sure you have ports 7808 and 7117 allowed on your firewall.

In the launcher:

Select the new exe by clicking on browse.  Make sure it's the one starting with 3.6.16 and is not the one with the d at the end of the version (it's the smaller sized one).
Setup your network type (Network tab in the launcher).  For most people this will be LAN and T1/ADSL/etc.    Only exceptions are those on Dial up and on the very rare occasion you have a really old DSL setup you may need to set that to dial up as well.  Try LAN first though.
You should not have anything in the Force Port or Force IP.  This is for advanced use only.
Make sure you have the Zathras Mod enabled!
Apply the settings (just in case)
Run the game

In the game:

Click the multi tab from the pilot selection screen
Select your pilot or create a new one.  Note this pilot does not need to match you login or pilots from other games.
Hit F2 and check your settings especially under the multi tab.  (Control settings do not carry over from single)
You need PXO turned on and your username and password you used for FS2netD entered. Squad is not necessary but if you are part of a squad it doesn't hurt.
When you are done accept the changes
Enter the lobby by clicking continue.

In the Lobby:

Here you can chat with people from FS2 and other FS2_Open games but can only see TBP 3.6.16 games.
To bring up the game list click on games.
From here you can either join or create a game.  In order to join a game it must be in the Forming stage.
If a game is not in the forming stage you can still try to join it.  It will send a message to the host.  The host may end the game and come back to get you.  Please don't do this more than once.  If he doesn't just wait until it's in the forming stage.

Hosting and Servers:

There are 2 types of servers and ways you can host a game.
First there is the create a game from the games list.  From here you just enter the name of your game.
Second there are standalone servers.  They may or may not exist.  You can tell by the * in front of the name.
To host on one of these look for one with 0 players and click join.  You will be asked to name the game and take control just like you were hosting on your own machine.
Next you wait for someone else to join.  You can start the game yourself but it's not as fun.
Select a mission from the available mission list.  The ones with a check beside them are validated and track stats.
Set up the options for the mission.  This is very important when hosting.  You need to set the respawns, difficulty and other options.
General rules:  Coop max respawns, no time limit or kill limit.  TvT 10-15 respawns.  For dogfight use a time or kill limit.
Warnings:  You may get warnings depending on what mission you select and other items.  Most mean nothing especially the hacked tables one (at least for now).

Game Sequence:

Loadout screen:  The host (coop/dogfight) or team leader (TvT) can move the players around to different positions by dropping and dragging.
When you have them were you want hit lock.
When lock is enabled the players can choose their ship and weapons and the host/team leader can do the same for the AI ships.
When done selecting hit commit.
Launch away and have fun playing.
The game will end either by itself, by the time or kill limit or when alt-j is pressed (normally this is reserved for the host to do)
Welcome to debrief.  Talk then click accept.

You have just played TBP 3.6.16 multi.  Repeat as needed or at least twice daily.   :D

Scheduled TBP sessions are on Thursdays at 8PM GMT.  Of course you can play any time you want.

FS2netD now shows online users and games from 3.6.10.  http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/main.php?s=totalpoints
Stat tracking is still under 3.6.9 until FS2netD is updated.

can we sort out the time line ......

is it like last summer that we play at 8pm uk time or at 8pm gmt (9pm bst)

just so every one is ok and gets there at the same time

Title: Re: 3.6.10 multiplayer setup instructions - Games Thrusday 8PM GMT
Post by: The E on April 30, 2009, 11:17:47 am
Isn't UK time = GMT?

Question is, do we adjust for summer time?
Title: Re: 3.6.10 multiplayer setup instructions - Games Thrusday 8PM GMT
Post by: captain-custard on April 30, 2009, 11:28:30 am
gmt is gmt , at the moment uk time is gmt+1 British Summer Time or BST , last year im sure we changed to Bst for thre summer but im not sure if that suits every one , for me it is not that important if i play at 21h or 22h Central european time , but maybe there is a preferance for those of you state side ..

so i was just sort of starting the debate a few hours before we play lol

now that started off great. Died during a coop mission, pressed F2 (before I saw any respawn window) changed a key, returned AND no window ever appeared. Couldn't chat, couldn't quit, couldn't warp out.

I think you might even have fixed it in your branch.  If not it's in Mantis.

Nope it's just assigned to you.
Title: Re: 3.6.10 multiplayer setup instructions - Games Thrusday 8PM GMT
Post by: karajorma on April 30, 2009, 04:24:09 pm
Nope, that's a different F2 bug.

This one is pretty easily explained if it's what I suspect it is. The problem is that when you press F2 the game stops running certain important functions on the client side. When the player comes back out of the Options menu the game still thinks that his ship is blowing up and that it still has to wait for that to occur to display the popupdead menu. Of course the ship has long since blown up and it will be waiting forever as a result.

The ability to go into the Options menu while dead in multiplayer was enabled about 8 months ago. I'm going to turn it back off for the 3-4 seconds while your ship is blowing up and see if that fixes the problem. I may also have to turn off the option once the popup has appeared but that should be the less dangerous of the two by far so I'll leave it working for now.

Changes will be in my branch soon.

When is 3.6.10 final? Because we intended to make a first real public Zathras then, including validated multiplayer.

chief mentioned that RC3 will be released in a week or so and if there are no major problems then it would be final,

other than that its  going to be 8pm BST in an hour so what time are we playing? 8pm bst or 8pm gmt, and who is up for it , ps is there any zathras update, if we dont play and you need a TBP fix have a play through the EA Janus in the developement forum , the more ppl who put an input about bugs and balancing issues the better.....;

anyway see averyone later

Around ships?  Did each team have a cap to attack/defend?

I'm curious because I never tested any of them.  Just tossed them together in notepad and loaded them in FRED to error check them.   :pimp:

Well it couldn't have been one we played before since there was only a dogfight until Zathras RC3.  Probably the TvT version of the dogfight.  Same cap ships and background.

Ah, the MMO crowd.

Where are the days when we sat down with friends and let the dice decide if my Axe strike removed the head of this Orc? On the other hand, playing Baldur's Gate is more fun

No it's a redundant roll out of bed, eat breakfast, check email, go outside and work, get drunk, pass out, repeat problem.  No rain = no break.  On the other hand rain = more work after since everything grows.

Well for this weeks session (which I don't know if I will be able to make or not) I'd like everyone who plays to grab the build from this thread:  http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,64409.0.html and give it a try.

If your not running windows stick with RC3.

Hi Guys, newb question for you...

I'm trying to follow the instructions in the thread but having some trouble: I've downloaded Zathras from the official release page but when I look for the "fs2_open_3_6_10r-20090125_r5053.exe" file in the launcher it's not there. Can anyone point me to where I can find it?

You should have a FS2_Open 3.6.10 inferno exe.  The 5053 one is old and not in Zathras.  Where did you see those instructions?

Ok, I have the INF build of 3.6.10.

The instructions I saw were in the first post in this thread.

Wow. Surprising when it worked perfectly well in TBP FINAL :P. Someone isn't taking backward compatibility very seriously. Doesn't this mean you will need to release a new Zathras every time they update the engine? Doesn't that mean your the SCP team's b**ch andicirk? They own you.  :D

Anyway thanks for the info. No need for tongue in cheek it's a statement of fact. Feel free to shout "Ha! You *must* download Zathras. I win. I WIN. I WWIIIIINNNN!!!! I AM THE BEST. YAY FOR ME!."

pmsl , "worked perfectly" now i know you have lost the plot , how many times were we hunting for each others games not being able to host or see hosted games and watching it crash 20 seconds after?
other than that i may have not explained , as you know the games are generally hosted on fs2netd server which has been upgraded so the 3.6.9 games dont show , this does not stop you from playing direct IP games ..; or playing by yourself ( i had a witty statement to add here but im just bored of you now  ;7)
you know where i stand , so please stop being this way....

and as for the scp ***** thing , there kind of cute and as long as the leather shorts doesnt chaffe im quite happy.......

Yeah. Obviously a game engine bug. The SCP programming team's job to fix. Not TBPs. The end user should have been able to simply drop in a new game executable to fix it. Except that SCP programmers lead by Goober and Karajorma decided that maintaining backward compatibility was just too much hard work. So instead, they made you their update b--ch :). Again. Have fun. Developing for SCP is a moving goal post.

Except that quite a few of those game engine bugs were caused by bad data. In which case the data must be fixed rather than the engine continuing to support bad data.

Up to you. If you deny that knowing they exist you're a liar. If you don't know they exist but simply claim they don't you're mistaken.

Doesn't alter the fact that there were several data bugs in TBP 3.4b though.

I made my position clear previously so stop being obtuse. This isn't the UN. It isn't Frost / Nixon. Hardly anyone is reading this and those that are, are backing you. That goes for all the other moderators. So grow some and say what you really think. Then we can move on.

We've not talked before. I'm portej05, and I'm a fairly fresh member of the SCP team. That said, I take exception to an accusation that we don't take backwards compatibility seriously or that we've made anyone our 'b****'.
Karajorma and The_E have demonstrated to my satisfaction that it's a data bug in the core files. Without being able to modify the core files, we cannot fix this in TBP. Personally I think Zathras is a hack, but seeing as we're unable to modify the core files, it's the only way we're going to be able to fix that data.

Personally, I have recommended multiple times that we discontinue ANY form of support for TBP whatsoever. Partially because of your attitude, partially because we cannot modify the core files and mostly because there is no team around the mod (not including Zathras here) to keep it up to date with the engine. Backwards compatibility is a major goal of the engine.

Personally, Sir, your attitude towards the SCP is pure hostility. We haven't stolen your assets (we're the engine, not the management), and I personally resent your implication that we're a bunch of incompetents.

First off I am new to TBP and have a fresh install for 3.6.18 and Zathas 2.6

When I try and create a pilot for multiplayer I get a Disk Of Of Space error. What could be wrong (and I am not out of space).  Also does multiplayer still work. My son and I would like to play together.

Thanks

Check you have the following folders in your TBP folder (or wherever you installed to).

TBP/Data/Players/Single/Inferno

If one of those is missing, you can sometimes get the above error.

Okay I checked my Freespace 2 player folder and sure enough there was a multi folder. I added that and now I can add a pilot for multiplayer. This is a fresh install from the DVD so not sure why it didn't make those folders.

Apologies for the bump, but is there another copy of the B5 multi missions somewhere?

The VP in the first post appears corrupt or something and I can't extract it. Just trying to get a hold of the missions so that I can validate them on PXO.

I noticed that and managed to get it downloaded previously. However the VP file is corrupted or truncated and my vp utilities detect this and won't extract it. FSO ignores that problem though and will use what it can, but I would prefer to not add files to the database with questionable integrity.
