Title: RELEASE - Just Another Day 3: Shivans on a Plane! (For Real Now)
Post by: Axem on May 30, 2007, 07:16:47 pm
THIS CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN RERELEASED! PLEASE GO HERE TO PLAY AN EVEN BETTER VERSION! (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71634.0)

Just a few notes about this before I go into campaign description mode...

1) This uses show-subtitle with great prejudice and was all done for a screen res of 1024x768. If you're using something other than 1024, it may appear skewed a bit.
2) No peeking in the VP (Spoilerz within)
3) Don't kill me
4) If you haven't played JAD1 (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Just_Another_Day) or JAD2 (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Just_Another_Day_2:_Electric_Boogaloo), I highly recommend doing so beforehand.
5) I never lie
6) Have fun!
7) No Voice Acting (sorta)
8) Some assembly required

Speaking of that mission, is anyone having trouble destroying the Demon? DaBrain said he couldn't even after the helpful hint the targetting gave him.

If you can't kill it try... (highlight the line below)
only destroying the Comm Node's Core subsystem.

It seems a subsystem won't count as being destroyed if the whole thing goes up first.  :blah: I'll have a patch for that tomorrow.

Uh I was tired and well, I played that damn last mission for 6 times or more though I never died.

- First I did not know how to bankrupt them, doh

- Then that GTVAngelion was ripping me to pieces

* First I just sat there like:

WTF?! :eek2:

and got eaten.

* Then I tried to go very far far away and got eaten.

* Then I figured, I'll just go behind it, and got eaten.

* Then I actually paid attention and throwed away my last idea and got it.

After success for the mission I tried out my last idea and it worked and gives really weird results:

Just stay behind the colossus, put camera position very far and enjoy the show :-).

Unfortunately that supposed to be (...)"beam" was not strong enough against the colossus and barely scratched it and then the GTVAngelion was even breaking apart and mating with the colossus (was a weird picture) ...

You might want to fix that "bug" :-).

I think best would be to destroy the colossus and let the beam rip apart up to A1.

The next mission I ate all the beacons (yummy), but apparently the mission critical one was destroyed.

At least it was no longer there when I had eaten all others and I ended up in 64x speed (to see if something changed) enjoying an endless battle of the capships ...

But really props to all the mad ideas!

cu

Fabian

Yeah I found destroying the Sponsors fleet and the Morality hard.

The Sponsors launched way too many fighters, I didn't have time to blow up their M0ney$!

HOW TO BEAT THE LAST MISSION:

Spoiler:
1. Terran Frakkin Command - just blow the pod where S.L.Jackson is...fighters will run away.

2. Sponsor fleet - as soon as you kill TFC, boost away and order your winmgan to follow. Stay away from the sponsor fleet and wait for their fighters to come to you. Order wingman to cover you. Once you kill all the fighters, circle around the fleet to their money transports and destroy them.

3. GTD Morality - Just order all wingman to attack it, and Colossus will open fire too.

4. GTA Evangelion - Inside the Hades (body part) bay are two support ship (batteries..LOL). Just blow them up.

5. FRED - enter knossos

Hmmm... I see some unintended behavior with the last mission. I'll have to go a fool proof it a bit more.

lefkos: Are you trying to open the VP with winzip? All you have to do is put the VP in a mod directory. If it's a problem with the zip itself, try redownloading it.

That shouldn't be possible. The Maxim doesn't have the "Huge" flag, you can't destroy big ships only with that.

I did, but it was useless, only caused the Colossus to fire flaks/AAA beams.

Actually for me the Colossus began firing its BGreens for me. But it only had one in range which made it very annoying.

That shouldn't be possible. The Maxim doesn't have the "Huge" flag, you can't destroy big ships only with that.

You can damage it, but only until 10%.

OK, you need a general overview of how .VP files work... read Karajorma's FAQ.   You are trying to use WinRAR or WinZip to unpack .vp files... no, no, no.  The .vp file needs to be unpacked from the zipfile, and reside as a single file in the mod directory.  (eg, JAD3)  Then it can be run as a mod from the launcher.  If you need more help, let me know.  PS if you did want to unpack a .vp file (for modification/curiosity reasons), then you'd use something like VPView, which can be found using Turey's Installer, see my siggy.

And for the record, this (http://www.axemspace.com/files/campaigns/jad36walkthrough.txt) is how you beat the last stage. (Warning Mega spoilers)

Well, I'm on the last mission, trying to defeat the *spoilers*GTVAngelion, and I just have to say, I wish you'd gone a little lighter on the Neon Genesis Evangelion because I felt compelled to look up the entire plotline and universe of the anime, and now I'm kind of depressed from reading and watching on YouTube the ending, and contemplating the nature of mankind and consciousness itself, and pondering to what extent Man is allowed to meddle in affairs that don't concern him, and such, and you've gone and ruined my entire evening.

Not that it was a particularly happy one, anyways.

I... don't... know...  :wtf:

Are there any rogue tables laying about? Are you running SCP 3.6.9? Tweak the accelerometer with the gyroinput? Made sure you're running this as a MOD and didn't stuff this in the root directory?

no rogue .tbl files as far as i know...using 3.6.0,dunno what the hell the next thing was.....and by running as a mod, you meen putting in a JAD 3 folder in the root directory and using the mod select feature? cause i'm using that.

whatevah, it's fixed now...now i'm stuck on that frakking mission where you gotta fight those waves of myrmadons around a hecate destroyer...really frakking hard

anyways, how do i view the extra cutscene pack? winamp wont work with it, and i don't got windows media player (damn little brother deletes everything), should that work. Is there any way i can view them in freespace?

Gaaaah!! lefkos, you are driving me crazy!!  :shaking:

OK, let me explain:

FreeSpace reads .vp files as they are, without extracting them.  The files are supposed to be in the .vp file.  The .vp file, however, needs to be extracted from the .zip or .rar or .7z file into your FreeSpace2\mod directory (replace mod with the mod's name, for example, \FreeSpace2\INFA).  The only reason you should be extracting things from a .vp file is to view/edit them outside of FreeSpace (eg, with FRED or Notepad++).  If you don't need to change something or view it without opening FreeSpace, then don't extract them from the .vp file.  FreeSpace reads .vp files just fine the way they are.

Does that make some sense to you?

and that sucks because these are one of the best campaignes of the game
do you understand it now a little better? i think i was a little vague to you guys :p sorry

In JAD, you can call them in using the "arrwalktheplank" cheat. Instead of calling a volition bravos, it calls in a plane with shivans on it.

Did anyone else notice just how epic Freespace feels with classical music in the background? I mean seriously, sitting there pounding away at the Morality's comm system is pretty mundane, but then you have Symphony No.9 playing and it feels like the most important mission ever.

Also, LOL at Evangelion intro-style mission preview, Gendo vasudan, Demon Lobster, and identity theft in last mission.

There's a bug with the weak point. You have to kill the Crystal subsystem; if you just kill the Comm Node, nothing will happen. I think he posted a fix for that. But just kill the subsystem next time.

Great work, Axem. I see JAD 3 signature splurge coming on.  JAD 1 and 2 were funny (perhaps funnier than JAD 3 to be honest), but in JAD 3 you actually play the mission for the challenge, not just for the jokes. Each mission is a puzzle, it's not like in JAD 2 where you're playing a simple FreeSpace mission, just with jokes.

Axem, this is just...amazing!  The whole entire series you created was definately something I never expected.  All the frakking jokes!!!!  Man, I couldn't stop laughing!!     All this while I was smiling and waiting in suspense for the next joke to come out!!!  This is kinda like the anime Hayate no Gotoku where they make so many remarks directly to the viewer!  I hope to see more from you!  Good work!!  I NEED MORE!!!  I might try something like this; it's like you've relighted my Fredding spirits!!  Maybe...just maybe...

I'm confused. Do you fly through the FRED Knossos and there's something on the other side of it? Or do you just fly though it and say that's that?

Since this is up here now, have you ever considered making a fourth JAD?

Old threads never die...they just fade away...

And my post was pointless. I went ahead through the FRED Knossos, sped past the Volition Bravos and the Shivans on Planes and went through the secret second Knossos back home. Yay. =D

Everything makes 1000x times more sense if you have the movie pack and have at least a passing knowledge of the FRED mission editor.

As for JAD4, its all in your hearts!   :)

(I have not seen anyone catch on though... I guess we can't all be 162)

For silly campaigns, you have Deus Ex Machina by Goob, and if you want a cheesy campaign, try the Second Great War part II.

There are two issues I have with this.

The first is that, unquestionably, the in-mission music for Made In Vasuda should have been Nadesico's You Get To Burning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne1hImfqCQg), but I guess that never occured to Axem.

The second is that mission's ingame cutscene doesn't work. Possibly due to bad firearcs from the mediavps (3.6.10), but more likely, it seems the sexps for the GTVAnveglion are misfiring on the 3.6.9 and 3.6.10 mediavps build I'm using, as you get teleported around and such and your hud never comes back, but your control of the ship does, so you can still complete the mission by shooting the armored shiney thingie yourself.

I'm having a little trouble with the last mission.

Spoiler:
After you have killed all the other bosses from the missions, how do you kill FRED (Alpha 1)?  He is invincible, and every time I start racing toward the Knossos Portal, it will not let me go through and I end up getting fried by the supernova because the mission refuses to end.  How do you beat this part?

Spoiler:
If I recall correctly, you really should be able to go through the Knossos and that would effectively end the mission and the campaign. FRED will naturally try to stop you with all sorts of things, like planes with Shivans on them, but if you just punch through, everything should work.
So, if this isn't happening, something is wrong. What build are you using?

Spoiler:
Aim for the dead centre of the portal. Or just restart the mission and do that.

So, after I ball cap the GTVIangelion, I try to steal the token of invincibility from the Hecate that jumps in. It becomes vulnerable, but only to a degree. Then the game crashes to desktop for no explained reason. Am I missing something?

Can you run a debug build, play that mission, and then post the fs2_open.log from the data folder here?

Post by: manwiththemachinegun on September 23, 2009, 02:07:37 pm
Sure, er, how do you do that? I'm new to Freespace Open, I consider myself lucky to have gotten everything up and running.
Title: Re: RELEASE - Just Another Day 3: Shivans on a Plane! (For Real Now)
Post by: The E on September 23, 2009, 02:15:39 pm
There should be an executable called fs2_open_3_6_10d or fs2_open_3_6_10_debug in your FS2 folder. Double click on that, run the mission that gives you trouble, let it crash, and then post the fs2_open.log from the data folder here.

Well, that's weird.

Under debug, I can't even get the game to launch correctly. Moreover, once I switch back to Freespace 2 MVP, everything is running extra fast like its on time compression.

Post by: The E on September 23, 2009, 05:29:20 pm
Open the Launcher, and select the debug executable using the browse button. Then run that.
After that, check the data folder for the log file, and post it here. Also, it helps if you tell us about any error messages that pop up.

I blame the coders for strict coding!

IT'S BREAKING MY MOTHERFRAKKING BACKWARDS COMPATAFRAKKINGBILITY!

Srsly, I love you guys.

I guess I know what I'm working on this week.

Check the lower right corner of the HUD, where the mission time is displayed. It should show the elapsed mission time and underneath that, a "x1". If it displays something else, like "x2" for example, time compression is indeed on. Go to the options menu and look at the control config for the key to reset it.
As for the error mentioned, it is due to some errors that were not caught in the version of FSO that JAD was made for, but which cause newer exes to freak out a bit. Axem needs to fix those.

Nope, time compression is set at X1, but my Erinyes fighter at 65 mps covers a kilometer in ten seconds. Beam cannon burst from capital ships last less than a second. And voice/text messages from command get backlogged.

I honestly have no clue. I think I got Shivans on my Computer Plane.

I think I'll uninstall and try again, I just backed up all my pilots.

Huh. First time I've seen that error.

Yeah, well. That is not helping. That error log is very, very useless. It doesn't contain any info that would help in figuring this out. This is not your fault, I hasten to add.

Anyone gonna mention code tags?

I got off my lazy ass and fixed some bugs. Actually they were fixed for awhile, but I wanted to add a few more things, but that was taking too long (Oh Axem! What else is new!) and I shouldn't really let JAD3 be crashing people, especially in the final mission. :(

All the links are in the OP.

I do plan on re-releasing JAD3 with some small extras. But that's Another Day

A ha.

A ha.

A ha.

I love the campaigns Axem, I really do. I'd replay them anytime they don't kick my hardrive in the nuts.  :P

I hate to necro but I cannot figure out Lord of the Beacon.  I clip through the enemies, can't hit them (while they mostly can't hit me) and flying through the said beacon doesn't do anything either.  I even tried waiting until 26 minutes in case the bit in the intro video meant something.  I'm probably missing something simple but at this point I'm stumped.

Huh, I managed to push through it.  Went around the lobster before dashing in to the beacon.  Then I clipped inside the Colossus until the Ares fighter died from outside factors.  If this is how the mission is supposed to have been done, I must say it was rather clever as well as completely obscure.

I think this is a bug with 3.6.10 Final, as I don't remember NOT being able to shoot the Shivan fighters or the enemy Pegasus when running 3.6.9 Final.

Regardless, the mission is still playable. It's just much more of a pain...  :p

Weird thing is that mission is the only time I experience that (Happens to me too), the missions with the Pegasi on the FreeSpace 2 campaign and Transcend don't have this issue. And of course any mission you decide to fly a Pegasus in the enemy has no problem hitting you.

I was clipping through that mission as well, I kinda assumed it was a clever FRED trick or something  :p
So I just went into full speed mode and yoinked the ball before they could.

Ah, so it WAS bugged.  In that case, I feel rather better about not being able to figure it out.

Has anyone ever seen the NNGTVSAFD Big on the last mission of JAD1 knock the Knossos out of place? :eek2:

I just watched it happen, suddenly a Knossos pillar was mere meters away from me.

...the NNGTVSAFD Big...

How do you remember that? I've been trying to remember that for two years and I still can't remember it.

I've played the campaigns at least...90 times by now... :nervous:

I was on IRC and someone was quoting something from a JAD briefing and I was thinking "Heh, that's funny. Where have I heard that before?" Then after a minute it dawned on me that I wrote that. :nervous:

Also some of the clipping issues may be from bad models in the MediaVPs. I was tweaking the very last mission, and after I moved the Hecate a bit, no ship could get its beam to actually hit the Hecate. They were all going though it.

It seems to happen on just one mission, I haven't seen any problems with ghosting ships on other JAD missions, it sounds a little strange but it seems to be the case.
