GameRanger - anyone use it? Would it be suitable to facilitate FS2 multi?
Came across this as a way to play Star Wars Battlefront 2 online, noticed that they've rescued a few game titles that have had their servers shut down.

After downloading and installing, I see a huge list of multi hosting, from Age of Empires 1 & II, Diablo 1 & II, FlatOut 2, Halo Combat Evolved & Custom Edition, etc etc.

Seems to be a no-BS, clean interface multi client with a bunch of stuff to make playing online easy (chat, hosted games lists, etc).

Thoughts?  Could we have a Hard-Light list of users so we could all play together? (whether or not we got FSO support in this thing, I'm sure a bunch of use occasionally and/or frequently play legacy games here)

Their page says nothing about Linux or freeBSD support, so no. Not going to happen.

Heh, some results from searching their forums for Freespace include references to FSOpen (but what's up with "Unfortunately there seems to be no response in general to new requests."?   Maybe they meant GameRanger?  Or were they requesting on one of our less-frequented sites?)

They've got it running on Mac, means Linux / BSD shouldn't be too hard , right?

Hmm.

Searched the forums, apparently there's no support for Linux, only Win / Mac.  And the devs response was about as enthusiastic as the responses one gets here regarding DirectX support.  :P

It's great that their forum links go nowhere :P

Err... probably have to have an account, I can see the content just fine, and IIRC there was a blurb about needing to be logged in?

Anyways, it appears you can get GameRanger running on Linux with a bit of effort (well, isn't that about the Linux standard? "some assembly required"):

https://github.com/chrismoos/gameranger-client   <- looks to be (unofficial 3rd-party) source there, could be used to make this all actually happen if one wanted to expend the effort?

I would also note that GameRanger blocks use of AI players. In Starfleet Command Orion Pirates, you cannot put an AI on a team and launch a game.
