Title: What Is Your Most Favourite Misson/Level From Any Game
Post by: Boomer20 on November 23, 2014, 04:32:46 am
As the title says.

Personally mine is between two:

First is Arnhem Knights from Medal of Honor Frontline. This mission is amazing in every facet, from the scenery of war-torn Arnhem, fighting in the streets and saving Kelso's men and most of all the music. The track for this song still sends shivers down my spine. I remember the first time we got to this level it took us (me and my brothers) forever to get past it just because it was such at hard level, still is challenging although once you work out the perks it is fairly easy to get through.

My second would be End of the Line from GTA San Andreas. It was just cool and memorable. The gunfights were fun and the drive-by sequence was awesome, I always kept a save spot just so I could keep replaying this mission.

The Ultimate Heist from Oblivion (i.e. the last mission of the Thieves Guild).

It's probably by far the longest mission in the game, where you use every single item you acquired throughout the Thieves Guild campaign to solve some neat puzzles, enter the most heavily guarded building in Tamriel, acquire (and see) for the first time in the series an actual Elder Scroll, and then proceed to escape. It's a fun mission probably because of the high "Holy **** Quotient".

Also good is StarCraft's Brood Wars secret mission, Dark Origin for story related purposes.

Hostile Waters, fighting your way out of the docks after you first start encountering the mutated 'super-units'.

Whilst not exceptional for any specific reason, I always remember that mission as being a brilliant example of just how much fun you could have with that game :)

I thought a lot about this one, and having spent most of my childhood on the Descent series, I think I'll have to go with Descent 3, Level 2 - Rescuing Dr. Sweitzer.
Always thought it was an intricate and fun level to play.

Deck 16.

Alternatively, Mission 4 in Freelancer. You know the one, where the entire Liberty Navy turns on you as soon as you launch.

My candidates:

1. Chapters 4 ("Monsters") and 5 ("There and Back Again") of The Longest Journey, where you go on a long trek through the Northlands and become best friends with a Crow, a very easily amused talking bird, rescue the magical mole people from the Gribbler, and, finally, take down the evil wizard Roper Klacks (who as April comments, sounds like Richard the Third on crack) and release the wind he trapped by imprisoning him in a calculator after failing to beat him at hopscotch. Not even The Princess Bride was that hilarious and magical.

2. The Mage Towers mission from Thief. Such a massive level and yet easy to navigate, so many nooks and crannies and secrets, and in the towers of each of the four elements they really show off what the Dark Engine was (and still is) capable of doing with lighting and sound. Return to the Cathedral is probably the greater feat of level design, but the Mage Towers was the most fun.

3. The Shalebridge Cradle, from Thief III. I refuse to believe that this level did not literally kill people by heart attacks. The first half of the level has lots of BOO moments but no actual enemies, as you start to piece together the real history of the place. As you enter the Inner Cradle, right as you realize the level designer has been manipulating you, the scares get replaced by real terror as you run into these guys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwv2KidDRUg&t=1m12s). Imagine all the fear from the entirety of System Shock 2 compressed into one level.

4. The Opera Sequence from FFVI. Well duh.

Other honorable mentions:

Deus Ex - where you infiltrate the Versalife Headquarters and destroy the Grey Death nanovirus. I actually think Deus Ex was overrated compared to the other games in its genre, but that mission was amazing from start to finish.

KOTOR - Korriban. I played lightside and double-crossed both Yuthura and Uthar. After Yuthura and I took down Uthar together she was completely blindsided by my betrayal when she started to feel the effects of the poison I had given her. I easily overpowered her, revealed to her, now begging for her life, that I was Revan, and let her live. That tops the "making the player feel like a Machiavellian baddass" scale.

The dream sequence in the Skein in Mask of the Betrayer. Such a beautifully written sequence. Imagine Restless from Buffy in video game form.

I was going to put down a BP mission (I would have to think a lot though cause there were so many good ones!), but I decided that if you're posting here you probably already consider the FS campaigns and such to be memorable missions/levels/campaigns.

Oh geez, so many to choose from.  But, from my childhood, I have to go with Descent just for being so memorable:

Descent:  Level 14 (Europa CO2 mine)
Starts you off in a tiny, dimly lit and empty room, while quiet, eerie music plays, slowly intensifying.  You have no clue what lies behind that door in front of you, lurking in the vast labyrinthine darkness of the mines, but you know it's not going to be good.  This is the largest, most complex map in the game, full of nasty enemies and challenging corridors.  Brilliant level design with a brilliant opener -- this one mission portrays everything about Descent's psychological effect.

Descent:  Level 14 (Europa CO2 mine)

I enjoyed Level 10 of that game more than any other. Maybe it was the music. Maybe it was because it was the first time you got the Fusion Cannon. Maybe it was because it's where you found the first secret level. Actually, Secret Level 1 was my other favourite.

Goldeneye - Dam (though about half the levels could be my favorite on any given day)

Descent II - level 1 (especially while using cheats to get all weapons)

Halo - Silent Cartographer

C&C Generals Zero Hour - Dr. Thrax general's challenge

Zelda OOT - Gerudo Valley (again, about half the dungeons/areas could be at the top of my list)

Far Cry - don't know the name/number of the level, but the one where you blow up the three jamming towers and the freighter.

Left off freespace because there's not really standout levels to me, but both entire games were all-time favorites.  FS1 probably has more play time than anything else I've ever played.

I can't really do favourites, but I can definitely do ones I will never forget

Like Descent - Level One
Pitfall: Mayan Adventure - Level One
Earthworm Jim - Level One

Although if I had to do a favourite... Zelda OoT - Spirit Temple

Assault On The Control Room, from the original Halo, is up there.

So is Good Luck from FS1 for the first time I did it having gone ridiculously, incredibly well as a perfect run with my wingmen roflstomping everything at my command while I delivered payload on target.

...I'm probably going to go with World In Conflict's post-Cascade Falls level, Aftermath, as a final answer. This is primarily because it was the first time I was given access to so much of the tactical support of the game, and definitely the first time I recall seeing a B-52 roaring in to sterilize the target area in any game. It probably better captured the feeling that the player was not alone than any other RTS/RTT I'd played to that time when you had so much supporting fire raining down.

Well, this is a tough one.  I don't know if I can narrow it down.

While I had some favourites in the original C&C and Red Alert series, I don't recall any of them well enough to pick a favourite, so I'll go with a couple of the most memorable I've played in the last decade, which are not from RTS games.

System Shock 2 - Level 1 - Med Bay/Science.  This level was perfection.  You begin the actual game thrown into a frantic escape for your life, having no idea what's wrong, what happened, but the vague notion that you should.  You learn your skills are limited, weapons nonexistent, and random threats appear from anywhere.  You get some scarce, precious resources, and slink around cursing the locked resource crates, pipe-wielding monsters, and neurotic computer.  The atmosphere of this level is perfection for a survival-horror RPG.

"The Cradle" from Thief 3 is also a great example.  It was terrifying.  Jesus.

Thief itself had some brilliant level design throughout; more people should replay these older games to realize the kind of effort that went into level design before the days of corridor 1 corridor 2 setpiece corridor 3 corrider 4 cutscene etc.

The original Deus Ex was a wonderful game of the same era as Thief and SS2, so no surprise it's level design was generally awesome too.  Vandenburg was probably my favourite of that from a sheer sense of "I am going to stand up here and wreck **** and there is nothing any of those puny mortals/robots are going to be able to do to stop me.". It gave a real sense of being an augmented badass.  Hell's Kitchen was also very well done.

BioShock Infinite had a good progression through Fink's areas too; from the initial slum, to the real slum's, the police station, then back and into the battle of the office tower, that was probably my favourite section of that game.

Last level of SpyHunter for the GameCube and City Escape from SA2B
I've played City Escape at least 700 times. Mostly to collect chaos drives for my Chao, but its still a great level. Final Rush is also really good

Most of a the first half of Half-Life 2 Episode 2.  Hunters are frustrating but cool.  The music is great.  The worst part of it is the last mission because **** striders, and even that's just hard, not bad.

Something I can think of to bring up here is the level design in Twisted Metal 2: World Tour. Particularly Paris, New York and Antarctica. Honourable mentions for Amazonia and Hong Kong.

Just on their own merits the levels are high quality, but they have some things about them that make them really special.

On the paris level you can destroy the Eiffel Tower, and then use it as a ramp to take the battle to the rooftops.

New York, fighting on top of the Skyscrapers is epic enough, but the fact there are multiple levels of elevation and you can actually smash your way inside several of the buildings and fight inside them is amazing. There's also an Easter egg iirc that you can fire missiles off at the Statue of Liberty in the distance, and doing so strips her down to a bikini.

Antarctica is awesome. You're fighting on this massive Iceberg, and it's falling apart as you fight on it. This isn't just cool in itself, it changes your whole style of fighting on that level. Success in this game, a large portion of it aside from your fighting ability is based around level memorisation and running away. As the iceberg gets smaller, it cuts down your options for pickups and cuts down your space to run and makes it more likely you're going to get jumped by multiple opponents.

EDIT: Almost forgot, the music!

Paris has a frere jacques remix.

It's surprisingly good though.

But New York and Antarctica have epic music to go with them. Check it out, the New York one in particular is one of my favourite pieces of video game music.

I think my favorite one is the Waterloo level in Psychonauts. I really liked the whole idea of becoming part of a board game at different scales. Some other I can think of, in no particular order:

Any of the other Psychonauts levels (they are all totally unique, and unlike any other game out there)
Into the Lion's Den in FS2 (the mission has its flaws, but it was just way cool back then)
High Velocity Weapons Research in Descent 3 (loved those high speed tunnels)
Hell in Painkiller (the final level, a creative twist on the phrase "war is hell")
Fear in Cryostasis (probably the trippiest level in this game, and full of symbolism)
Normandy level in MOH: Allied Assault (very immersive and cinematic for its time, although less impressive today since many games have since copied it)
Alien base mission in Crysis (great atmosphere and artwork, and had a very alien feel to it)
Rachni mission in Mass Effect 3 (similar to the above, but still very good)
Liberty escape mission in Freelancer (as mentioned by someone else)

Thief 3 was an excellent game, but I thought that Shalebridge level was a bit overrated. I guess those types of levels just don't do it for me.

Mechcommander 2: The final House Liao mission (esp. the first time, good atmosphere, run for your life feel)
Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries - Beach Fight ("If I didn't know you any better, I'd say you are enjoying this a bit too much, sir!") and the final House Davion mission sets.
Freespace 2: Bearbaiting and any mission involving defending an Arcadia station (Enif, and that one in Capella)
Mass Effect: the final assault on the citadel (gotta love that Zero-G)

Need for Speed 3: The Aquatica track.

This game pretty much defined a massive portion of my childhood.  Soooooo much fun.

(I think the music choice for Holland deserves some props too.  The level's just this huge flat rectangle crammed with enemies, and the track for it is this kind of screaming-fiddle hayseed rock thing that fits the resulting insanity perfectly.)

Me too. I played it for years. Eventually won it with everyone on hard. It has a special place in my heart. I'm sure I'll still go back to it.

Yes, the music works well, but talk about a lazy level compared to the rest. And with 9 enemies, it's the hardest in the game imo because with the smaller size of the level and all that wide open space you just get murdered. There's usually nowhere to run, there's always someone waiting for you wherever you go.

But yes, it's incredibly fun and incredibly challenging.

Oh and let's not forget the absolute pure terror of facing Darktooth the first bunch of times before you finally understand how to deal with him. Of running away and him storming up behind you to crush you like the insect you are...

Warhead - The Berserker missions. Slap bang in the middle of a war with the enemy you come across a threat deadly to both sides who proceeds to take a very personal interest in you. I especially loved the way they handled first contact with an alien being.

Hostile Waters has already been mentioned but I prefer the missions later on in the game, one special favourite though is the one where all of a sudden you have to defend the Cabal habitation island and you're faced with a choice between helping the enemy or doing your own thing to defeat the bugs.

Populous the Beginning - The final level. I AM A GOD! YOU CAN'T KILL ME NOW! HAHAHAHA! Finally a chance to rain firey death and destruction upon your enemies without the need to worry about the enemy picking off your Shaman when you leave her alone for a second.

Got one!

That mission in X-Wing where you pilot an A-Wing and just have to ID a whole mess of Imperial capital ships and stuff. The A-Wing was normally one of the fastest ships in the game, but when you transfer all weapons and shields to engine power ('cause you really shouldn't be stopping to shoot at anything), the speed about doubles and it's breathtaking.

Tie Fighter Battle 13, the last mission, that mission was epic and great fun. The game overall had some awesome missions but this one was a good speccy. Watching capital ships and then ISD IIs duking it out with lots of lasers is great fun. And killing lots of ties.

Halo, The Silent Cartographer.  It's the standard by which I judge all other FPS levels.  Very few have come close.

Actually, the first Halo game had a lot of these.  The Silent Cartographer, Assault on the Control Room, 343 Guilty Sparks trio is very solid.

Gotta admit, the only reason that didn't hit my list was because Warthogging with the Marines can be really painful. Scorpion with the original coax and all doesn't have that issue.

Cut us looooooose

That's the most horrifying thing in an RTS ever.

I'd actually give that one to the Taidanii transports level, which the first time I did it was so disturbing I had to play it with the sound off. Though not before I basically curled into a ball, defending the Kuun-Lan and leaving the transports to their fate because trying and failing to defend them and then hearing those screams was just too much.

That being said, the game did have a definitive best level. There's nothing quite like hearing the Picard-like Fleet Command go Sisko on the Bentusi.

I've split out the Bentusi discussion. It can now be found here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=88806.0

Mechwarrior 2: Ghost Bear's Legacy - the mission where you stand on a jumpship defending it from other mechs whilst preventing massive overheat.
Mercenaries: The solaris missions in both the games.
Mechwarrior 2 itself: The mission where you control a Jade Falcon Mad Dog, infiltrate a Jade Falcon base, take out the reactor coolant, and run the **** away

Oh man, I forgot about that Mech 2 mission. So many great missions in that game.

... I never had Ghost Bear's Legacy. Need to rectify that.

Oh yeah, that one infiltration mission (Cold Crescent)! Normally I cruise in a Firemoth, fly in and out and watch the fireworks.

From Ghost Bear's Legacy, I personally loved "Strike on Moritz" (the one where you basically level a whole city).

From other games, kinda of a split between Solomon Shrine from Ys II (lots of exploration and great music to back it up), Area 6 from Star Fox 64, and Raphael the Raven's Castle from Yoshi's Island.

Ooh yes, Strike on Moritz was quite fun

I always pick the Mad Dog for Cold Crescent as the mission briefing specifically states it ("We captured a Falcon Mad Dog")

I found this where someone dissects the Paris level in Twisted Metal 2: World Tour nicely. The Statue of Liberty Easter egg gets thrown in as well. It's also one video in a series of videos on best levels in games which you may be interested in going through.

Oh ****, Metroid.

Fusion -- the whole thing.  ****ing love Fusion.
Prime 1:  Magmoor, Phendrana, and Phazon Mines.
Prime 2:  Every time you're in the dark world without the dark suit.  And if you're ****ing crazy, getting the light suit without the dark suit, including fighting Boost Guardian.  FFFFFFFF--
Prime 3:  Just kidding, Corruption sucks ass.  Phaaze was kinda cool though.

What else.  Uuum, SSX3 - doing the whole mountain in one go.  Fun ride.

I mentioned super earlier. The whole start. The whole end.
Everything in between.

Also fusion.

Lower Brinstar. All of Maridia. The first time you go to the nocturnal habitat and have to face the Ice X Parasites.

Borderlands 1:  Everything involving Crazy Earl.  And his widdle skag puppy Scrappy. :3
Borderlands 2:  So many great scenes, missions, and quotable characters, but Rising Action is the tops.
