Title: Singh's Background Emporium
Post by: Singh on April 29, 2005, 05:46:24 am
Ok, now that the new nebulas are publicly available [check milliways!], and that a significant block of free time will be coming soon (ROD LOH!), it might be a good time to start this off. Although I couldn't help out in their original creation project much, I feel that at least I can do something here.

Once a week, or if time restrictions apply, once in two weeks, I'll release a background set using the new nebulas that will be free for public use by anyone, or any mod.

I'm currently working on the first one, so pictures and the necessary data will be up soon.

As I intend this to be hopefully a permanent thing, I hope the admins can help to sticky it if possible.

Thanks, and hope these help.

I'd like to add my backing and stuff.

Also - I'm currently working on new Derelict nebulae for the restoration project, so, um, I've got a potential Tau Sigma, Tania Australis, Deneb and Altair as well as Sirius and Vega and ideas for Phi Eridani, Tegmen and Delphi... so, er, just thought I'd mention that. In case you have any stuff or ideas you can send me or would like to avoid redundant systems or whatever, your call.

hmm....thing is, I'm not doing system-specific stuff, just backgrounds. They can be used whereever, whenever, as opposed to being 'tagged' onto a certain system, per se.

However, feel free to add any backgrounds you wish to share. A collective resource would do many a FREDder goodness, I'd think

Oh, okay, I see.

Well, I'll think about it, wait until you've got everything set up and all. Contribute when a variety has been established so that there isn't, like, a situation with four similar nebulae released in a week or whatever.

But yes, stickify please. This'll be very handy, I reckon.

It'd be great to see someone come up with some really great, realistic Star Field backgrounds, free of large Nebulae and such saturating many of the space backgrounds we see in games these days. I understand that with the whole start blurry effect thing, having about 400% more stars in a background might not be feasable, but what are the chances of that happening...?

It's already done. Check Lt. CannonFodder's post in the screenshots thread of the TBP forum.

As for system specific backgrounds I finally have some time free this week so I'll be making some of my own.

Ok, the first background release is done. Following is the data you'll need to input for the thing.

I've entitiled 'War of attrition'

You have scaled the nebula bitmaps too much.

Looks good to me, actually...

I still say that Lightspeed's nebulas should only be used one set at a time.  The blend here isn't terrible (but good lord, 68 background nebulas?  Might as well make it a full nebula!) but in general a unified color will look better than a split.

I would have used more (and hence scaled the things down more as well) if wasn't so afraid of hitting the limit and having FRED crash on me, screwing up everything :nervous:

The limit is 80, by the way. I hit it once.

Singh, I love you (as a friend). Whenever I try to FRED, the one thing that stops me 99.9% of the time is that I CAN'T figure out hte Nebula/Sun placement thingy.

Looks nice, but you could just add all of them into a skysphere.

The blending will look better, and the performance should be also way better.

But than again, you would have to compose everything again. :nervous:

thanks. I haven't been working on much recently due to Navyfield addiction, but since I'm also doing a massive render today (nearly a million polys :shaking: ) I cant play.

In other words, I've started work on a new background - expect completion in ~12 hours if im not distracted by much else... :D

Ok, it took shorter than I expected. I'll try to take screenshots now, but no way to confirm if FS2 will run atm.... Anyone willing to give it a go?

Edit: forgot the title. As you'll see in the screenshots below, its aptly named 'Hell's Inferno'

Loving all your work so far Singh, you can get rid of the HUD in FSO by pressing pause and then Tab, but you will still keep the FPS indicator.

Beautifull nebs, but a bit too full of artwork to be realistic. One or two of these systems might be good for alien new galaxy kind off things, but more would be too much IMHO.

Pfft, realism. Who the hell needs that!

I'd like to see one using the dark, E-set.

I love 'em, especially the firey one. I shall be putting that one to very good use. :D

I prefer a more artistic approach to a realisitic approach. It's much more vibrant and really brings a feeling to the mission.

New release this weekend. It isn't a large one, or very spectacular for that matter, but its the first one that's got a few planets in it. No screenies yet, perhaps later (or if anyone is willing to give it a go and post a few?).

I almost forgot. The previous one was entitled Hell's Inferno. This one is titled 'Sinister Creation'

Title: Singh's Background Emporium
Post by: Singh on June 19, 2005, 07:10:12 am
You know something.....the lack of response when no screenies have been posted is rather...dull.

Anyways, no new updates this week - but before I get working on the next background, which set would you like to see used next? I've already used the dark orange, blue, red and green sets so far, what should be next? :)

More red and orange ones! >D

 Greatwork on all of these mate. :)

Might I ask for a link at the top of the page to a zip containing all of the above? *crosses fingers*

hmm....a zip isnt exactly practical, since these are backgrounds. You just need to copy & paste them into the appropriate section in Notepad. Its pretty simple - before (or after) you start a mission, open up notepad, scroll downwards till you see the part titled #background bitmaps and then delete that section only (if its a blank mission, it should be a rather short section), and then paste the above entry into there. Voila! You now have the backgrounds into the mission! :D

Yes, but a zip file with a few txt files in it would be nice. This thread is very long and troublesome to dig through to find a certain background...
Me too lazy!

Well, we'll see about that. Sounds like a good idea tho.

Anyways - for some strange reason, FS2 refuses to allow me to take any screenshots! Pressing print screen doesn't produce anything, so its rather confusing! Once I can get it to work, i'll put up some screenshots. Till then, here is the code for the new background:

Ok, now that the new nebulas are publicly available [check milliways!]...
This may be considered old by todays standards, but I am looking for generic artwork such as Singh's work in this thread. However I'm not sure how they are implemented. Of course I understand that the text based code can simply be inserted into the mission xxx.fs2 file using a text editor but that does not explain where these nebulas actually come from.
The only reference made above is to "milliways", so I assume that's here; Milliways Download List (http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php?list.5)
Now there is several options, I started with the 'Nebula Patch for Freespace2' but it does not contain some of the names listed in Singh code. The other options are of course 'Replacement Sun images for Freespace2 Open', and the DDS/TGA variants of 'Freespace 2: High Resolution Planet Background Images'.
Now can someone please explain Exactly what has to be downloaded from 'milliways' and how to implement it so you can see Singh's work? ie...File structure = Where do I put the .tga images for them to overwrite using FS2 default ones in FRED?
This may be common knowledge for most people but noobs like myself have no direction whatsoever, not even a basic readme, and I think it would be essential to have such info. in this thread.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hi,

Firstly: Welcome to HLP

Second: You dont need to go to Milliways for the nebs anymore. They have been included into the Media VPs in one of the VP files. You can either get 3.6.7 (more stable) or 3.6.8. (less stable, more pretty stuff) and it should be there already :)

Hope that helps :)
Title: Re: Singh's Background Emporium
Post by: NumNuts on January 21, 2006, 05:16:03 am
Ok, I'm running 3.6.7 but none of the default .vp's or even the effect.vp's available from SCP .vp files (http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php?list.2) have the same naming format as yours in this thread. Actually both default /effect and the effect.vp's only contain a naming pattern like neb01-18 and dneb01-18 plus some planets. I can not find anything remotely like nebulH13-whisp or nebulH2-main for example in any of the .vps.
Now either the code names have changed since your original posts or I'm missing something all together. I do like the look of your pics but still at a loss how to translate the code into todays 3.6.7 vps. Have you got a key that translates old names into new names???? (assuming thats whats happened)??

Damnit, you're right.

I just realized that the ones I had were in my desperation mod folder.

Anyways, I'll zip mine up and upload them here, since finding it in the other posts will require a search, and, well, this is stickied anyway.

Give me an hour or two, and i'll put it up. :)

Yup, uploaded to here (http://www.game-warden.com/singh/Nebula.exe).

All textuers into  data\effects and tables file into the data\tables

one problem: i cant find my original stars.tbl file, so i hijacked the derelict re-release one and used thatinstead. You'll have access to the new nebs, but not the old ones, sadly :(

The Nebs weren't included in the media VPs as they are only used in 3rd party campaigns.

Now if we ever get around to replacing the backgrounds in the :v: missions.....
Title: Re: Singh's Background Emporium
Post by: NumNuts on January 21, 2006, 07:16:08 am
Ok, Still got problems. :mad2:
Although now I see the new naming sequence in FRED, it does not list ALL of nebs in the effects folder, it runs out at F9, thus making the rest of the F's, G's, H's and I's not rendered.
For example, I put a copy of your "Hell's Inferno" into a mission via text editing, loaded it in FRED, and althought the background editor listed the proper names (G-series) of placed nebs, the selection list didnt. Alas there were no background nebs showing in FRED. So I thought maybe the Game will still render them, but no, it didn't.  :(
Is FRED limited to how many nebs it can display in the background editor?
Why doesnt the game render types that FRED doesnt list when the file names are correct and the files are in their respective folder?
ie. If I use one of your other releases such as "Sinister Creation" where it uses the "A" group primarily, they show up in-game and in-FRED.
FRED version I'm using is 'fred2_open_r_08282005'
Sorry for all the questioning, just trying to wrap my head around whats happening.  :doubt:

The tables Singh gave you are incomplete.

Use these instead and you'll get everything (including the retail stuff). Although there is no I series of nebs. I think you're misreading the H's as I's (I did that once myself).

One of the things that surprised me is that the TGA nebula backgrounds in media SCP are not actually upgraded versions of the original  FS2 ones.  That brings very incoherent backgrounds in FS2 main campaign.

Said that I think I preffer these  which are included in Derelict and also have PCX versions aswell. That is for me to be able to see them in FRED. Is there any command line variable that allows to view TGA  backgrounds in FRED?

I donĀ“t  suppose anyone is ever gone and redone the backgrounds in FS2 main campaign for SCP is there?

Could just be my browser since my computer is currently FUBAR.

(Sometimes I hate Windows XP, wish Vist would come soon)

Rather than make a new thread, i'll just ask here:

How would one add in the enhanced star-field - the one used in the main FS2 campaign among others - to a FRED'ed mission? Y'know, the one that septuples the number of stars visible?
Title: Re: Singh's Background Emporium
Post by: karajorma on July 11, 2006, 06:19:50 am
Basically it's a skybox. Open up one of the other missions in FRED and look on the background editor to find it's name.
Title: Re: Singh's Background Emporium
Post by: Mefustae on July 11, 2006, 08:37:06 am
It would seem that skybox names aren't actually presented when original FS2 campaign missions are opened, or other campaign missions I know to possess the enhanced starfield.

hi,
its starfield.pof.

but with the normals stars you have a effect on the stars if you use the afterburner, they smudge short on topspeed.
the starfield.pof is static but have more stars.

And isn't there a black hole with accretion disk in one of the multiplayer missions?

Ok, it took shorter than I expected. I'll try to take screenshots now, but no way to confirm if FS2 will run atm.... Anyone willing to give it a go?

Edit: forgot the title. As you'll see in the screenshots below, its aptly named 'Hell's Inferno'

Hell's Inferno? For an english the name is ok but in my language, well,it means "Hell's Hell" .
Your maps are excellent, but you should change colors, you make or something all blue or something all red....

That's actually not what a black hole looks like. ;)

I hate this, but dammit Goob is right!

Inferno=Hell, not "Fire".You know this word due to Dante's work and sometimes prefer it to Hell, but Hell's Fire(or Hellfire)is "Fuoco dell'Inferno",which is cool anyway.

If you want to see a skybox, write "starfield.pof" in the proper field(background, skybox model)when using FRED Open.

If you want to create a skybox, you first have to see it :)

You can't see the skybox in FRED. You have to play a mission with a skybox bg.

Yes you can. It may be that you need to fiddle with the options in the view menu or add the -jpgtga flag to the FRED command line but you definitely can see them.

Really?

Strange, I was sure...

Thanks, anyway. There's always something new to learn. :D

If you have a TGA texture for the skybox FRED is showing it but since you haven't added the -jpgtga switch it's invisible :D

So unless you have a .dds texture you'd never spot it. :)

Ah...so I guess most skybox textures are in dds format so I can't see them.

Wrong way round. You'd see .dds. You wouldn't see TGA or JPG unless you added the command line.

This is going to be a very, very stupid question..

But how do i download some of these backrounds i see in the screenshoots? And put them in FRED?

What I did was I copied those gigantic amounts of text and put them all into a .txt file. Then when I wished to use one, I copied the data from that file into the mission's Background section using Notepad (Notepad can open and edit mission files easily enough).

Interestingly, one of the maps i made was popular primarily for it's background (As well as the action), which i had to do semi-blindly in Fred2. After extensive testing and fixing I found that it worked great. I don't mind having to do it all blindly though.

Usually i don't really need more than 20-25 nebulae's, tops. I'm amazed that the random way of adding numbers can get such amazing results, however.

I'm wondering if the Emporium should be wikified...it'd be a nice idea... :)

What about it?

Emporium wikified... (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Background_Emporium) ;)

If you guys think adding the screenshots is appropriate, you're free to do that. :)

EDIT: You've probably noticed an unnamed background in the list... how to deal with it?

So, it's been a few years since anyone's posted here, but can we post our own backgrounds to add to the ones that Singh made?

I guess we can do that, nobody said we can't.
