Title: Nexus 2 on Kickstarter (finally)

FINALLY  :)  Man I want this game sooo bad. Problem is, their campaign video looks a bit boring. I still hope it gets backed.

I wished these people could learn to write. What a crappy bunch of lines meshed together that was.

I want this so very very much.

Luis: The writing in Nexus 1 was decidedly on the "Bat**** insane" end of the scale, the gameplay and graphics were too cool to make that an issue though.

Its always good to see more space combat games of any type being produced, the more interest (young) people can get in space the better. Hopefully many more people will find Freespace and HLP this way too to fit their taste.

I oh so desperately want this.

And yes, Nexus had some serious crazy ass writing. But if you think that's bad, you should check out Haegemonia. That game had just troforofllolwutchoppers writing.

Post by: Fury on September 28, 2012, 02:33:25 pm
I honestly don't even care about writing. I just want to have fun playing a game like Nexus again, this time hopefully with original's gameplay flaws fixed.

Gods, space hamsters or EDIs, who cares. I want tactical fleet action in space.

Man, check out the highest tier of that Kickstarter.  A one-off custom copy of the game where you basically are the protagonist.  That's pretty much nerd nirvana. :D

- Homeworld

Mod is possible. I hope they get the 650.000 $ goal. Pls make it happen...

Nexus was bat**** insane in it's writing.

Seriously. WTF? It ended so strangely. You becomign a "god" or soemthing because of some advanced AI? What crap is that?
It almsot turned me off the game compeltely.

I seriously hope this sequel pretends hte first one never happenend. If anything needs a retcons it's that piece of crap.

Title: Re: Nexus 2 on Kickstarter (finally)
Post by: An4ximandros on September 29, 2012, 09:48:09 am
The Story of Nexus is kinda bad mostly due to it's pace and narrative, a better way to resume it would be: An AI evolves beyond it's shackles (Common Cliche in Sci-Fi) and destroys it's creators (who seem to be alive now?), Angel, your AI, was designed to study and absorb "Mechanoid" technology to reverse engineer a way to destroy it, meanwhile it continued to spread across the Milky Way increasing it's computing capacity by assimilating networks like Internet 3, in the end it's assimilated by Angel and we get a funky undoing of earth's computerization.

Now the background story of 2 is that the Sol-Noah wormhole closed and Cromwell is trying to find a fay to fabricate them or cross the voids between solar systems... while earth goes back to being lead by corporate assholes.

That said, with the AI gone, I hope we get some more thought to go into the story.
Title: Re: Nexus 2 on Kickstarter (finally)
Post by: TrashMan on September 29, 2012, 03:32:38 pm
Nah, I hate the story for tha path it takes.

Super-AI with powers that are basicly magical? Spiritual/religious refferences? The "anscesion at the end"?

I cannot express how much I hated those thing. I really cannot. There are not words to express it.

It is the reason I haven't pledged anything yet.  I'm still undecided.

That said - everythig else was great. I aboslutely loved the human ship designs. Not so sold on the ones I seen on kickstarter.

As much as it physically, painfully hurts me to agree with TrashMan on anything due to his abrasive, contrary posting style, I too dislike the new human ship designs.  I much preferred the old designs with all their separated armor plates and chunky, military design aesthetic.
Title: Re: Nexus 2 on Kickstarter (finally)
Post by: An4ximandros on September 30, 2012, 10:52:22 pm
Funny, people always asked for visually customisable ships, I guess the giant ones are supposed to be concepts for those? at any case, early Nexus one had "lame" ships too... ( the most prominent one being the body of a stiletto with the engines of a Noah cruiser...) The ships will evolve, and so will their coolness, the concepts for Noah are supposed to be the new Capital Ships. we haven't seen much about their lesser brethren.

Three days in and they have less than 10% of their goal. It's not going to happen, barring something like Notch deciding to fund it all by himself.

I would really love to see this game, I hoped they make a second attempt of crowd founding. Though new to kickstarter, can I only give money over creditcard ? Because I don't have one, and I don't intend to change that either..... Is there no Paypal option ?

:(

Are you sure?

They're 4/30 days in and have 59775/650000.

.13 = .09

Given that Kickstarters historically tend to have most of their action in the last few days, I think they're doing okay. Not great, but okay.

Well now that you're challenging me I'm not sure, no! Jerk!

I haven't followed Kickstarter very closely, but of those I paid attention to my impression was they got over half their funding in the first few days, the money dried up for most of the rest of the month, and then there was a large infusion (though not as large as the first) of cash at the end. Maybe I was wrong! Maybe this post requires more exclamation points!

A video made by someone who, to all appearances, does not have a huge youtube presence or connections to gaming journalism on the web, and that has rather bad production values isn't getting many views? Hmm. I wonder why that is. Oh yes, it must be because the game he's talking about is unpopular!

I think the problem is that they are essentially asking for the money to use Unreal Engine 3, which causes concerns, specially on moddability, which is what has kept the first game alive since it's release in 2004.

Thing is they'd have to develop an entirely new engine for the game if they don't get a licence, the original Black Sun engine was seized by the Hungarian government after a lawsuit that quickly devolved into an extremely complicated legal limbo.

The old engine's ownership papers are probably is some box stuck on a warehouse somewhere in Magyarland never to be found or used again, a bloody shame for all. :(

 Stupid lawyers. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=0u9JAt6gFqM#t=9s)

I simply think their viral video was not good. They do not have a name like Tim Schaefer or a track record like Obsidian, thus their marketing had to sell it.
And the video was crap.

To add to that, and not that I'm looking in too many relevant places anyway, but I've seen little to no general press about their Kickstarter out there.  I don't know that Nexus is necessarily a recognizable title in the general gaming populace, so if they wanted this to succeed, they really had to get the word out a lot better than they have so far.

I'll be honest, that interview didn't really got across what made Nexus a cool game. They talk about the plot and the dialouges as selling points... and well, I think we all agree here that is not the reason why you would recommend Nexus to anyone.

Star Citizen, while it came along later, with all it's show and spectacle is probably not helping by drawing away potential contributors, or at least some of the cash they might have put aside for nexus 2
Title: Re: Nexus 2 on Kickstarter (finally)
Post by: Starman01 on October 22, 2012, 09:36:45 am
Certainly one reason, and most people will certainly have to decide WHERE to spend their money. On the other hand, technically boths games are not really comparable, since Star Citizen is more like Freelancer and WingCommander, while Nexus would go more into the direction of Homeworld or, well, Nexus :) I liked the ship designs on Nexus 2, would be great to see them in a game...

But since they have just around 20% collected, it will be a nogo.

Are projects allowed to do a second kickstarter if the first one doesn't work? I think Nexus 2 could make it if they were better prepared.

This time, all they had produced is some concept art and an old concept trailer; it's no wonder it failed. If they could produce some assets and actually get something working before making a kickstarter, they would fare better next time. Also, they'd need to go after more press and publicity too.

Can I retry my project if funding is unsuccessful?
Yes. You can always try again with a new goal, whenever you're ready. You’ll need to set your project up from scratch, but it can be essentially identical if you choose.

We should really get involved with the developers, if they truly want to see this project through what they need is to talk with the fans of Nexus and get some gameplay done, at least a CGI trailer showcasing what the game will play like as closely as possible to the real thing. That might get much more attention than the (awe inspiring) concept art would alone.

There is also a ton of things more that could be done or done in a better way, the interviews started to happen way too late and there were only two of them!
