Title: Things that you wanted to know but were too afraid to ask.

Sorry about the redundant title. :P

Anywho, ask away!

"Redundant title"?

 :D

What's this mod about? Yes, I know nothing about.

Hrmm... That reminds me. I should set up a FAQ...

Very basically, it follows the 158th banshee squadron throughout its history, from parts consisting of a war between the Earth Alliance and the Colonial Coalition to parts decades past FS2. Act I Is set during FS1, Act II during FS2, and frankly that's all I'm positive of right now, because it looks like the previous team wasn't either.

in the released mission, i feel like some should have skyboxes, but all that shows up is black space (aka no stars).  am I doing something wrong.  using only exposition files and updated tables

Which mission? There were about 19 or something like that released, 12 Exposition missions. I've actually only had the chance to read the briefings of the Exposition missions in notepad.

i think the 5th exposition mission, and some of the others
i dont know about the test missions
i know the original team had screenshots with skyboxes, so i was wondering if they should work
i have some missions with nebulas (clouds), but no skyboxes (completely blank black skies instead)

What's exactly left to be done for the release ?

SCP build issues. Some builds like 158th, others don't. We're trying to "persuade" the ones that don't.

i do't really like the exposition missions, they're too... hard.

so it follows the banshees throughout their history? i thought of doing that with my own squadron, but... *looks at his title*

Is this dead? Or are the developers still working on it with many things under wraps?

We are not dead. It is however being worked on in the same fashion that one would escape a 5 foot thick concrete cell with a plastic spoon.

It's really slow at first because you can't do that much with a plastic spoon. But come November, water will get in the cracks of the concrete and freeze, causing the structure to splinter and collapse, and you can escape to your freedom.

We're progressing really well, ATM. Expect to have a major status update within the following several days.

I believe the ships in the 158th model dump may be used freely.

So now an official answer. Good. Is "Models of >insert ships< made by the 158th Banshee Squadron Team" good enough, or do I need to dig into the files and get the exact names?

So, you guys plan on picking up that new skybox method for future releases?

Probably, assuming that we find places to put pretty skyboxes in future releases. I will say that the story for the next act is both structurally and functionally done, and as it's set during the late T-V war and during the Great War, there won't be any sub-orbital combat (especially not during hurricanes), so if there are any skyboxes, they will definitely be of the non-atmospheric variety.

Shame. The atmospheric backdrops were always pretty, but with the new method they could be amazing.

Still good to hear though.

What progress has been made on this since Febuary? (I may be being stupid and simply not seeing a release topic)
I'm really looking forward to this one  :)

They are looking to recruit to start working on future stuff.

If you haven't played the earlier Exposition release, don't.

Well, when I'm not busy with real life stuff, I've been busy partying with my good pal Fred. Things get lonely with just us so we've been looking for more people to play with us. But that's the brunt of it. In fact, the only thing that's not written about the next act's story is a tidbit that I can release to the public. :nervous: I'm sure you guys don't want to read our notes on it. We've dabbled a bit in some effects work, but as I said most of the work is simply FREDing everything. (without more freders, that'll still take a bit of time :))

And while I'm at it I'll talk some more about Exposition since GB brings it up. I tried talking about it on IRC a week or two ago, but some people got in some kind of huge argument and everyone stopped paying attention. Arguably the biggest selling point of Exposition was that it featured entirely new ships and focused on a previously unexplored topic of GTA history. But that was a while ago. FSO and FSU moves pretty quickly on its own, projects notwithstanding, and simply put the combination of a changing engine and aging resources don't lend itself well to aging. We could've sat around waiting for modelers and artists to work on things, and for a while we did. Then we stopped. The story and game play were something else. While largely intact, we could have torn it apart and restructured it into something that it wasn't and what the original team didn't intend it to be, all while in the midst of making sure the mod itself still worked with more modern FSO builds.

The 158th is more of a campaign paradigm rather than a mod unto itself. Each act is essentially an independent work, a record of what one particular squadron has experienced throughout a good chunk of history of the GTA and GTVA. But rach act has an overarching story that binds them together, loosely at first but it becomes much more apparent as the player progresses through the acts, eventually the latter parts will focus only on that story, and how the 158th plays a role in it's... "solution," if you could really call it that.

Once we finish that arc, we'll come back to fix up Exposition in earnest and add new acts ad nauseum until people lose interest (at most loosely related to the story arc referred to above), or there just isn't any more time to tell people that the 158th squadron is doing cool stuff. Whichever comes first.

Anyway, hope that helped. I'm sure there are more questions, does anyone want to ask them?

I will say that I really liked Exposition's model designs and general setting; those skyboxes were drool-inducing.  I'm looking forward to what you guys are able to produce in later chapters.

Last exam is today, if they're not up by the end of Christmas I'll bathe in my own entrails. More specific than that I cannot tell.

We're all fairly busy with IRL stuff, unfortunately. Can't remember if I've mentioned it before or not, but Act I is written with fredding in progress, The final act is written, albeit without a detailed mission plan, and I have a fairly decent idea of what I want to do with the in-between acts.

i don't mean to be antagonistic. it feels like years since any update but i just figure a veteran modder wouldn't bother to ask since only a few projects actually have something to show to the fans. maybe my troll-ey sense is paranoid.

speaking of interest, i'm surprised this board hasn't been archived along with some of the other projects despite having nothing new for months, but on the other hand it would shock me a bit.

As a matter of fact, Shiv helped out in our attempt to iron out bugs from the demo, not that he wouldn't have the right to ask for a status update anyway. :p

And on another interesting note, I did some tabling work for TAP back in high school; I think at one point the 158th team happened to be a subset of the TAP team. But then I started running out of time I'm able to work on modding FS. I only work on the 158th a small amount more than I currently work on TAP. (note my lack of a TAP badge)

In spite of this being the most active board here on HLP, I will say that being archived wouldn't stop me from doing what work on the 158th I can do, though it would certainly make getting fresh blood much more of a challenge.

Serious though, this was the first Christmas I didn't spend time doing stuff for the 158th in a few years, and that made me sad.  :(

Regretfully, zero progress has been made since I last posted in this thread. If it's any consolation, I managed to reverse engineer an autograder for my data structures + algorithms class. Now I won't need to rely on their online utility to test my projects performance, which will be very convienent as the due date approaches.

I've actually managed to do a decent amount of FREDding since the last update, but sadly nothing that would really bring any distinguishing screenshots just yet. :(
