Title: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: Hyper Ion on March 30, 2008, 02:31:50 pm
Anyone remember the old bird? Here's some screens to refresh your memory, if not introduce the wonder to ya'll.

http://web.telia.com/~u52019065/Render/Tenny1600b.jpg

http://web.telia.com/~u52019066/Render/Tenny_by_planet2.jpg

This thing was never converted into a .pof, and if it was, it was never released to the public, at least not in any living links these days. The only amount of progress I knew of was that TrashMan and Woomeister were working on it, but that was years ago. I made a topic requesting the Tennyson last December, but got nothing I could work with. Getter Robo G was kind enough to give me what has been done, but I have insufficient (none) moddeling experience to work with it. (What he has done is contained in the attachment here)

TrashMan seems to be too busy (last I heard) with other things to attempt this again. I was wondering if anybody out there is at all willing to get this thing finished or perhaps updated with additional details.

Yuck, that ship looks ugly. Who made it?

Edit: What a wonderful subject for my 500th post.

I think it looks good, but needs the turrets fixed, they dont look very FSish  :nervous:

It looks pretty awesome IMO, except for the ugly Iceni-like texture scheme.

in the second pecture, just to the right and slightly above the Tanny's right turret, is that a new awacs vessel?  :drevil:

I gave you ryx's file...
I did NOTHING to it... (for the record).

Rumors I had a hand in anything of note are false (except for Trek Primaries (fake secondaries) and they are based of TBP nials etc..)  ;7

Dekker, you must remember!

I'll go ahead and change that bit of info on ya Robo.

Oh, and by the way, I looked through Ryx's image gallery on the site linked to those pictures. Yes, it is a new AWACS apparently, but it just seems to have a bulked up hull with the the prong still the same size, making it look... odd.

If someone could get the thing centered correctly and add in some FS2 styled turrets (I agree with Rico on how the current ones look like crap) all in .pof format, I think I could do the rest save .tbl files, mostly again with the turrets. Then again, anyone could take it from that point on.

Post by: Droid803 on March 31, 2008, 06:15:20 pm
If this was just running it through PCS2 (as in, defining the turrets and stuff), I'd do it, but the skill and twiddling (as in, separating the subobjects) required is beyond me...
Title: Re: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: Hyper Ion on March 31, 2008, 07:05:22 pm
From what I can tell, that and more. The "dummy" subobject with two Tennysons can be deleted with no ill effect. Apart from setting up the turrets, everything else (special points, thrusters, paths, etc.) need to be defined. The Tennyson also has only two LODs and no debris.... Since there's a .3DS file in that attachment up there, someone could make the debris. But where exists a modeler with the time?

Yes, its hitting us.
Every last link has been replaced with f*cking Rick Astely.
While its fun in moderation, this is overboard to the point of retarded-ness. *sigh*
Hopefully, the damage done isn't permanent...as in, the admins have a way of fixing this after this is all over.

For the sake of everyone's sanity, I suppose I will post the raw link to the pics.

Anywho, @ Droid803, all the the heavy work that'll need to be done is LODs, debris, and turret stuff.

Just a related question, as I am working on fixing TrashMan's Whitehall, which is missing a few things, how necessary are paths in regards to subsystems and turrets?

If anyone works on this, would you mind putting a nameplate on it? The mediavps nameplate texture is a transparent overlay you just put over the existing geometry.

Is there anyone with decent moddeling experience that wants to work on LODs and debris?

Title: RE: <Tennyson Revival Update>
Post by: esarai on April 20, 2008, 10:27:20 pm
Okay, I bet some of you are wondering why this is taking so long. The short answer is that the file format conversions are the definition of chaos. First, I tried the 3DS Max file, but I am in the dark about how to make a .pof out of a .3ds. I then tried importing it into the program I generally use for freespace modding--blender. Well, To say the least, everything got ****ed over big time... every texture was made into it's own object, and all the object centers were about 500-1000 units away from where they were supposed to be. I honestly don't want to deal with that mess, so I'm using the .cob for importing. The only thing that gets messed up there is all the subobjects are at the origin, not where they're supposed to be on the ship. If someone can give me pictures of the full tennyson from left, top, bottom, front and back, that would be great. I need those images to see where the subobjects are.

I did, however, manage to model new turrets for the Tennyson. Here's a link to the pictures so that you can give your input.
http://files.filefront.com/Tennyson+Guns+Remodelledjpg/;10047599;/fileinfo.html (http://files.filefront.com/Tennyson+Guns+Remodelledjpg/;10047599;/fileinfo.html)

File front for IMAGES?
you could have just imageshacked...

but nice. they look more freespacey now.
Title: Re: RE: <Tennyson Revival Update>
Post by: Water on April 21, 2008, 12:46:23 am
... every texture was made into it's own object, and all the object centers were about 500-1000 units away from where they were supposed to be.
Don't worry about all the textures getting their own sub-object. PCS2 will be able to put them all back into one object again. (Unfortunately with the help of Truespace at this stage)
See The Iceni file for how to do it. It has the Blend and Cob so you can compare.http://files.filefront.com/Iceni+blend+TSzip/;9993083;/fileinfo.html (http://files.filefront.com/Iceni+blend+TSzip/;9993083;/fileinfo.html)

And yeah -  Filefront is not a good choice for images :p

For Object centers - Turrets
In Object mode: Object > Transform > Center New

Again, sorry for this taking so long... It's just that time of year when your teachers try to suck out your soul with homework.

anyhow... I've encountered a slight snag... None of the turrets on the ship will work properly... their subobjects don't rotate as they're supposed to. This has happened with everything I've tried to make in the brief rest our teachers gave us. Any Ideas as to what's wrong? (Note, I use blender3d)

Nice guns! There's an elegance to simplicity.

(minor tangent)
Have you heard about the FS2 Turret Project (I tried to put together)? basically I take different barrels, bases and joints and allow you to make a Mr Potatohead type of turret assembly. We had several modelers donate to the cause already, but I am always looking to add more quality variety. Would you be willing to donate those turrets? i would include the original intact one, and separate barrel/base parts.

The whole point of the project is take base A and barrel B (with or without Joint c) and you get a whole new turret. This increases visual options exponentially (and makes models look way better than just FS2 type "Boxes of Doom"(TM).

[Or better yet actually join the project, my problem is I got a great deal of resources, but no skilled help/that has time] All authors are fully credited and parts kept in .cob format.
(screenshots in the project thread)

(tangent over)

As for turrets not moving I only know the basics via TS3.1.
karajorma's Turret tutorial (The only one I ever head about) covers single and multi-part turrets on this page:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/shipmods.html

If you can do an equivalent procedure in blender (or other ap) you should be ok.

once a turret is set up right in the ap, after conversion you use model view to edit them as subobjects and add the 3 turret fields (I can remember off hand) and parent/arm objects referenced. after that choose a axis x,y or z for rotation (Usually bases are Z, depending on the model most of the time X works on occasion I had to use Y for proper rotation fo arms...)

Note I have very basic conversion skills so explanations of successful procedures I have used are limited to that. Someone like Water, VA or other real modelers can help you out more precisely.

Okiedokie, everything is scaled in, and it will shoot stuff up real good, but none of the non-combat subsystems work. Any suggestions for a fix?
Title: Re: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: blowfish on May 11, 2008, 12:40:50 am
Non-combat subsystems (comm etc) can be added in PCS2 (under "Special Points").  They are usually just a point with a radius (unless it is a destroyable subsystem, in which case it needs geometry).  Also don't forget they need to be defined in the table.
Title: Re: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: esarai on May 11, 2008, 09:50:25 am
Hmmm... Thanks for the suggestion. I think it might be fault in the POF file itself, since there are specials already in the file and defined in the table. It might be an issue with PCS1, since that's what I have to use for subsystems (I have a really crappy install of PCS2--almost nothing but the textures editor works, everything else causes a crash. Suggestions?)
Title: Re: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: blowfish on May 11, 2008, 10:32:34 am
My suggestion is use PCS2 RC2A to edit the POF, and then recompile it with 2.0.1.  I get those crashes too, but this method works for me.
Title: Re: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: Getter Robo G on May 11, 2008, 12:29:45 pm
And just a reminder... There's always modelview (to fall back on).

Title: Re: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: blowfish on May 11, 2008, 12:31:05 pm
Only use modelview if ABSOLUTELY necessary.  PCS2 is stable enough to be used in at least 99.5% of situations.
Title: Re: Anyone Care to Revive the Tennyson?
Post by: esarai on May 11, 2008, 06:59:51 pm
That's interesting....
In my install of PCS2, it's only .5% stable.
Seriously.

What the hell did I do wrong to make it work so crappily?

Yao wazzup?

I finally found a way to get the (insert preferred explicative here)ed subsystems to appear. I had to do it with modelview (since PCS1 is crapped in it's subsytems writer, and pcs 2 just crashes if I try to use anything but texture name editing). But that's not important. the important part is that the thing works. Here's the link.

http://files.filefront.com/Tennyson+Fileszip/;10224112;/fileinfo.html (http://files.filefront.com/Tennyson+Fileszip/;10224112;/fileinfo.html)

So... you'll find the POF in there, the Hyperlaser1.pcx file is for the special lasers I gave it, you can change that if you want... and the .txt file has all the table entries needed to make it work.

So... you'll find the POF in there, the Hyperlaser1.pcx file is for the special lasers I gave it, you can change that if you want... and the .txt file has all the table entries needed to make it work.

Nice!
No paths not thruster glows, but I can fix that. Looks pretty awesome.

Oh and btw... the second weapon in the arm turrets is called super-flak, and I forgot the table for it. Here's another link:

That was a nice surprise to find this morning coming home from work, Thanks for (relatively) finishing this!

What are your plans now? Are you up for other old stuff (FS2 oriented or not)?

Well, as of now... I'm trying to survive finals week. After that I'll be working on a few other things... and I also intend to start on a modded campaign that my friends and I have been planning for a while now. But, since that usually goes rather slowly.... I can expect to have a fair amount of free time in a few weeks. I could do some older stuff (and I will remember to do debris next time).
