Hey guys I'm using Turey's open installer on top of GOG version of FS2 and unfortunately my connection sucks, so it stops every 45 minutes (it restarts instantly so it's not a problem for most stuff but it is for downloads).

Will this **** anything up or does the installer have some kind of "checker" to see if files are fully completed? Or will it just keep re-downloading the same stuff over and over?

Hello Peeps! First post so please don't frag me!  I'm obviously being stupider than stupid as I've been at this for nearly a week. Followed the guides, updated this, downloaded that and still don't truly understand what I'm doing. Maybe it's alzheimers setting in early, I'm only 40 and it's a decade since I slaughtered Shivans

I have the original FS2 discs, and for nostalgias sake I've just bought an orginal set of Freespace The Great War discs complete with Silent Threat.

I've got the 3.6.10 launcher thing 5.5 (?) downloaded all the components and everything works for Freespace 2 running media vps mod, looks awesome by the way ! But when I try to run FS Port I get error messages stating unable to find 2 ship classes. The same thing happens when I try to load other mods??

I've created new pilots for each mod and still the same result, anyone got any ideas where I'm going wrong as I'm quickly running out of hair to pull out!

Your fs2_open.log: (possibly the most important thing ever)

• fs2_open.log is a file generated by debug builds. It contains all sorts of useful information that we need in order to help you. That is why you should follow the instructions below and provide us with that file when asking for help. Creating an fs2_open.log happens like this:
  
  • Download the recommended build (link is in the first post of this thread) if you haven't already and place the .exe files to your \freespace2\ folder.
  • Switch to windowed mode (open the Launcher, open the Features tab, select Dev Tools from the pulldown menu and tick on "Run in window").
  • Select the debug build (fs2_open_3_6_10_debug.exe) and run it. If you've been experiencing crashes, do exactly what you've done previously, up until it crashes.
    
    If you have had other issues, it is sufficient to run it until you get to the Main Hall. If the debug build crashes fatally even before getting to the Main Hall, no worries.
  • Quit the game.
  • Find fs2_open.log from \freespace2\data\, copy it to a safe location and include it to your post, either as an attachment (click Additional Options when posting) or using the "code" tags.

That is, most likely you are missing some (FSPort) files or you have some files in the wrong place. fs2_open.log will reveal such things.

Edit: I'd also like to take a moment to advertise the list of common issues, since I just remembered the possibility that you have forgotten to select the FS1 campaign from the in-game Campaign Room. Just setting FSPort as the active mod is not enough, you see.

If you want to try fredding You should NOT create medivps folder, but instead put all mediavps files in your main folder. Otherwise FRED2_open won't  see any MVP's features (backgrounds, shivanized secondaries etc.) of course it won't  let you play "fs2 classic" but really why on earth would you want to do this in the first place? to show disrespect to the SCP team's hard work?

Wrong. Under no circumstances should you do this.

Instead, add -mediavps to your mod command line and to the secondarylist of the mod.ini file in any mod you create.

What Battuta said. The -mod commandline flag exists for a reason. And it is also the flag being used whenever you select a mod with the Launcher.

1. Some people do want to see retail graphics from time to time. Or they want to do some testing or somesuch. It's much easier when all mods are in their own subfolders instead of being messed up directly in \freespace2\ .
2. The SCP didn't create the better graphics. They created the FSO engine that makes all sorts of things possible. The FSU team created the MediaVPs. And I don't think they're offended if someone wants to play FSO without the MediaVPs occasionally.

FSO Etiquette Rule #1: No mod files directly in \freespace2\ or \freespace2\data\ . Use subfolders.
No amount of explaining/reasoning/bull**** can change the fact that the MediaVPs are also a mod.

having problem with the installer , it's not installing after i'm ticking the everything and and updates  the next screen nothing is available and ut's not installing nothing ?

what is the problem and how am i getting the installer to install?

I had a bout of nostalgia and was desperately looking for a "modern" space/flight sim, something that came close to Free space 1/2, nothing really did.  After some digging I came across this site and the modding projects, nothing was ever wrong with the game play of FC2 but a face lift has made it all the more enjoyable, absolutely amazing work I thought was only reserved for star trek and star wars games lol.

Game is still miles better than anything else today and the documentation on this site made everything easy, THANK YOU!

One thing possibly worth noting (but has been noted elsewhere on the forum) was that the installer had some issues downloading some of the mods, so to be safe I reinstalled the game clean and then used the off-line installer; next the on-line installer to update as much as possible to the most recent files, switched to 'fs2_open_3_6_12r_INF.exe' in the launcher and it seemed to do the job perfectly.

Apologies for the rushed post but ended up playing until 6am and simply wow to the level of quality and dedication; to the code work, graphical work, mod work, documentation, community and game itself

hey thanks I am still getting used to Win 7 and now run a 64 bit system..kidna worried bout what cna go wrong lol its interesting to realize i needed to come back and read this just for the open install. thanks though hopefully it works this time.

edit: i now seee that Win 7 needs to be watched. The part about not using Program Files seems to have helped dowloading everything now but looking good. i am soo rusty...T.T

Hey, small snag.  I ran the Turey's Installer and all, but where it says to make sure fs2_open_3_6_10.exe is in the browse line, I only have the files fs2_open_3_6_12d_INF and fs2_open_3_6_12f_INF, which of these do I use, or do I need to install something else?

Use the _12_INF_r ones. 10 is obsolete. Goob forgot to change some text in the installer.

Well, that and the fact that this guide talked about 3.6.10 like there was no tomorrow. I've changed the numbers in the text, but can't be arsed to take new screenshots.

I've also ran into the problem about the Amazon training drone being invisible and only able to be destroyed by seeker rockets, and the subach lasers being invisible(but they still destroy things)  I checked the bug board and it was a known issue.  I was told to go back to 3.6.10 Media VP's.  I just wanted to mention it here in case there's another solution.

Buh!? No, you shouldn't have to go to back to the 3.6.10 MediaVPs. That is not a good idea!

Can you make sure that there's no file called 3613_update.vp in your root FS2 directory? If it's there, can you move it it to mediavps_3612? Do you have mediavps_3612 selected as a mod?

You're not doing anything wrong, no worries. But so many reports of this bug are starting to make me think the installer is borked.

No, I don't have the 3.6.13 vp in the FS2 folder, all vp files are either in my 3.6.12 folder or 3.6.10, there is a folder titled fsport-mediavps that only contains a .bmp, 2 text files, and the mv_fsport.vp, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.  I had my 3.6.12 folder targeted, after I got the 3.6.10 i switched targets, but left all the other files just in case.  The 3.6.13 ure talking about is in the 3.6.12 folder.  I'd be happy to send you a screenshot of the contents of the 3.6.12 folder if it would help prevent this bug from happening again.
   Little more info, in the tech room where you can view the ships and weapons, the amazon drone is invisible there too, though you can read the summary.  And the npc trainer guy can't shoot the amazon drone either.  I let him shoot through it for a good 3 minutes before I blasted it with a pair of rockeyes.

Can you post a log file? Run a debug build (ends in -d), load the Amazon up in the techroom, quit out, go to /FreeSpace2/data/, post fs2_open.log.
