Shadow Genesis  is the largest in-progress mod on Polish Freespace 2 scene and is going to be very different from current campaigns available for players. Since almost two years we have been working on this project. Using the most advanced FS2 Open technologies and inventing an unique storyline, we’d like to create a long (about 45 missions) campaign of the best quality.

The Shadow Genesis team is much smaller than for example Blue Planet team. 90% of work is being made by two brothers and experienced FS2 modders from Poland: Teeraal (also known as Qbitus and Betrayal) and Macielos (previously known as Petarch).

What to expect in Shadow Genesis:
- Epic and unique storyline. As lieutenant (then commander) Nathan Miles you will join the 6th Terran Fleet, commonly known as The Wolf’s Fleet, autonomic GTVA fleet stationing in the Wolf’s Systems Group. The years have passed since the second Shivan incursion and the Alliance has rebuilt its power, but despite that, the times are not easy. As a pilot of the Wolf’s Fleet, you’re going to face dangerous and well-armed terrorists from Cerberus Legacy. This powerful secret organisation spreads its influence in all GTVA and is preparing an intrigue that may result in a huge-scale war.
- Great battles and tactical combat. Forget about stupid enemies deploying tens of bombers and fighters wing after wing against the destroyer. Cerberus Legacy does not send large forces to battle, but maximises their advantages and uses unconventional tactics. Be prepared for quick hit & run attacks against GTVA warships’ beam cannons as well as sniper strikes swarming you with Trebuchets. Most ships will leave the battlefield when seriously damaged. They will also attack in larger groups, not just wing after wing, ship after ship, like in most campaigns. On the other hand, in many missions the player has 3-6 wings (including fighters, bombers and sometimes special units like snipers) under command, so wise command is crucial when facing outnumbered enemies.
- Campaign of the highest possible quality. We’re going to elaborate all missions in every detail. Explore all systems of the Wolf’s Group, each with unique backgrounds. Fight in space, on the planet orbits, even in the atmosphere. In SG you will find many Open-based facilities and solutions: cutscenes, checkpoint system known from War in Heaven, hotkeys, extended directives and escort ships windows and many more. Shadow Genesis has a large modpack that includes new generation of GTVA warships. We use many refreshed and retextured models that you have probably seen in  other mods as well as a few new models designed and created especially for SG. You will also experience the new GTVA arsenal in combat: long-range artillery cannons, subspace perturbers, disruptor beams and, of course, many new primary and secondary weapons for fighters. Last but not least, our mod has almost entirely new soundtrack from great games and films.

When will the project be released?
Expect Shadow Genesis to be released about May 2011. About 2/3 missions are completely or almost finished, but we’re still waiting for a few models. Version 1.0 is being created in Polish – firstly, because we want to support the Polish Freespace Scene. Secondly, because we want to catch and remove any bugs that will occur. The final version will be then translated into English and released on HLP about June/July 2011 and it will be compatible with the newest SCP builds including Antipodes.

Gorgeous backdrop work there, very impressed. Especially like the Blue star near the top. If the campaign matches the visuals this should be good ;)

I haven't been notified that FreeSpace had become a national championship. No offence, but what is this whole stuff about "Polish modding scene" ? There is no competition going on dudes, and there is way enough crap going on in the world to not exacerbate jingoism.

Nice screens.
Though I don't like the idea of Polish release comng out first, mostly because I don't like Polish FS translation in the first place and play with everything in english, thus english HUD and generic messages would look out of place in an otherwise Polish campaign. I'll rather wait for english release (if you'd like to have a translator to take care of this before release, I can try, but I don't have much free time, so it won't be very quick).

Holy **** that is stunning. Very impressive picture of the Orion in front of the blue star, reminds me of the ending in Blue Planet's WiH. I bet this campagin will be very great, I shall stalk you until you complete it.

It has got 32 turrets in total. At the time of the Shadow Genesis campaign, Orions are being replaced by newer destroyers and those still in service are equipped in new long-range plasma cannons (like those of Reyena/Atlas), so they serve as carriers and artillery support rather than frontline battleships.

Reyena is now GTFg Atlas and plays an important role of long-range artillery frigate. Long-range combat has become an essential part of the GTVA military tactics.

Well, to be honest, it was an idea of my brother, Betrayal/Qbitus, and he insisted on it. The plan is to release 1.0 version on Polish Freespace Scene, catch all bugs there and then release final version (translated into English) on HLP. I reassure you that Polish language in SG will be much better than in main FS2 campaign ;). And of course, we are open to all help in translation, so we'll call you after SG 1.0 release.

We don't want to compete or emphasise our nationality in any way. We've just mentioned we're Polish and so far we were active mostly on Polish Freespace scene. If you regard every reference to nationality as jingoism, you are mistaken. We are not nationalists at all.

It's Bobbau's Orion, but with Trashman's main cannon model imported from Trashy's Orion. Droid803 did a nice version for his Tides of Darkness mod, Orion in SG is based on Droid's alteration but I've changed a few things.

I don't know if mentioning our nationality at all is a good idea, since most of what both the previous and current Polish government accomplished was being a disgrace for itself and our nation (and in case of the previous government, the humanity itself) in the most spectacular and humilating way possible. Let's release SG in English and quietly forget the nation which gave the world "Get lost, beggar" line (froum our previous President, no less) and The Smolensk Circus. It's just another slightly wild country somewhere near Germany.  :)

2/3 of 45 missions means you have 15 missions left to finish and 2 months to do it. That seems like an awfully tight schedule... you sure you don't want to take a little more time to make sure you get everything thoroughly polished and tested? No need to rush...

Looking forward to it either way. :)

May 2011 is not a final date, it may change if something goes wrong. We'll do our best to finish the campaign on time, but if we don't manage to elaborate everything, we'll certainly postpone the release. Oh, and a number of completed missions is actually not true as I wrote the announcement a few weeks ago. Now we've got 7 missions and 3 cutscenes to make, and then, of course, LOTS of testing and balancing ;). I think we may finish by May.

Consider me for Beta, I could also begin translation immidiately after joining, thus speeding up the English release.
Although I won't be able to work very fast, I'm both quite good at English and have contact with people who are even better than me (as in, teaching English in High School, on a very high level), so I should be able to handle translation quite well. I also consider myself a decent pilot (I played BP AoA and WiH R1 on Insane and helped with balancing missions for that difficulty).
Being one of the few people out there who can do all that and actually understand Polish should also help (in fact, I'm a bit worried about testers for SG just for that reason, there are many great testers on HLP, but I don't think many of them speak Polish).
The only downside is that for some reason, I can't access FSPL for some reason (it doesn't seem to like Opera and I'm not going to use IE just for that).

Well, we certainly cannot reveal that :). I can only say that the Shivan Gate is a portal discovered in Spica system and was probably constructed during the Ancient-Shivan war. The reason of its construction and what is hidden behind it is one of the greatest mysteries in SG.

No, They're not Shivan. They belong to another race that will appear during the campaign ;). It's already known on Freespace scene but it has been refreshed and its origin, history and role in the universe is completely unique. You'll see what I am talking about (unless you recognise its ships on some screenshots :))

It's planned. I'm also thinking about mod's page on FSWiki and a few articles about ships, weapons and other things from SG universe, but I don't know how to write articles on wiki.

BTW. We are looking for some 3d modellers for finishing a few models. We finished the most important models, but we need a few more. If someone skilled with 3d modelling, uvmapping and model converting want to help us, we would be able to finish our mod faster. There are only 3 models to finish out fleet :).

Backgrounds are very important for me. In SG, you will perambulate new 6 systems, so I'm working on makeing them all just perfect :).
I'm using a lot of free resources from DA. It's the best source of new backgrounds. All autors will be credited when SG is released.

Is that the Sirona in the 2nd pic? Looks sweet.  What are those weapons the Orion and Reyena are using? Some sort of secondary anti-cap weapon?
Also, what's the big ship in the 2nd to last pic?

In SG Sirona is called Argus and this is not a GTVA ship :P. Gauss-like cannons from Orion and Reyena [in SG known as Atlas] are Tactical Plasma Cannons - secondary long-range anti-cap weapons [artillery]. Inspirated by alien orbital cannon from Starship Troopers. And... Big ship in the 2nd to last screenshots is the GTSD Merdarion - Anchorage class. It's flagship of the 6th Wolf's Fleet. GTSD Anchorage is a class of experimental GTVA superdestroyers created to destroying the biggest enemy ships like Sathanas with a support from GTFg Atlas long-range frigates. Artillery strikes are very frequent in Shadow Genesis :D.

So how many exclusive ships do you have?  :eek:  I knew you guys had a few (the destroyer based on the Phobos Adv.,the HTL Icelus, and maybe a few others) but it seems like you have'd quite the custom fleetpack put together, and it looks extremely badass.  From what I've seen, Shadow Genesis will contribute a ton to the pool of user-made ships.  :nod:

Oh, and I also absolutely love the atmosphere of the shots you've released so far.  The combination of the backgrounds and lighting is awesome.  :)

Thanks for that good words :). At this moment we have GTD Nephelai [Phobos adv. based destroyer], GTSD Anchorage, HTL Icelus, HTL Sagittarius from TVWP Team, GTD Preliator [GTD Boreas HTL] + a few special models like SG nodemap for cutscenes. 2 carriers and new artillery frigate are WIPs. Most of SG ships are released, but I've altered everything [retexturing, bugfixing, turrets etc.]

It's time for short progress report :).
We've got 3 missions and 3 cutscenes to finish. Then we'll add checkpoints and a few minor facilities and then we begin tests. They'll last a month or two. I estimate final release date to be about June/July 2011, but we're not sure how much time testing is going to take.

And Shadow Genesis has just joined the list of hosted projects on Sectorgame :).

Not everyone is advised, so... Time for some update :D.
We FINISHED freding! Testing will begin very soon. I'm finishing the last fixes in the modpack. Adding turrets flags and alternative subsystem names, you will see completly new turret naming [instead of old "Beam Turret", "Laser Turret" etc...]. SG system will be more clear. I'm converting the last model - the replacement for the old NGTD Gaia. This one is fully uvmapped not tilemapped, every exclusive model from Shadow Genesis will pass into uvmapping instead of old tilemapping, but probably not in the first release [lack of good staff and time]. Now it's 2,07gb :P, but we have a lot of uncompressed maps, a few old and unused files and everything is in data folders not in the vp files. After final touch up, it will be something around 1,5gb.

Currently I'm busy as hell with real life issues, so I don't have much time for mod. Progress is now a bit slower, I'm focusing on optimalisation of the modpack and removing bugs. Co-author of the mod - Petarch is working on new balancing systems, inspired by the system from Procyon Insurgency.

After kicked out my girlfriend [f**k her :D] I got back to work on SG on full power. After almost half of the year of wasting time, I'm working on it again. Now SG have intensive debugging, expect the release in holidays. Sorry for a big delay, but I'm at least not the worst of it :P.

Heh, no :P. We're using recolored landscapes and buildings. At the start, we wanted to make our own landscapes for every atmospheric mission but when we encountered a lot of troubles with converting first of them and our modeller lost his capability of making very hi-poly objects, we adapted SoL landscapes, and I like buildings from SoL much more than ugly bricks from WiH :P

No, the names are in English. The problem is, they were picked so that they sound cool if you don't know what they mean (and if your first language is Slavic). Thus a few of strange names like Funeral.

In ToD, it did struck me as a bit silly, but this wasn't as pronounced, because that was an enemy fighter (not to mention ToD is somewhat obscure, which is a shame) and not your main missile through the entire campaign. Not to mention this name fit nightmares much better than a perfectly ordinary Terran missile. Though to be honest, "Funeral" isn't the worst name in SG (Szczerbiec missile, anyone? :)).

And I do remember sending you a lengthy PM with feedback, which included those silly names pointed out. :p While I'm not a native speaker, I'm familiar with thinking in this language, to the point I sometimes have to translate my thoughts into Polish (which does occasionally sound either silly or incredibly "worldly" and sophisticated, depending on the situation and the listener).

actually the first one looks likes a high poly version of the Shivan planet killer from Inferno, the Vinaashak. I like the organic feel to them. I always wonder what aldo intended for the nightmares, as the originals where very shadow like from B5.

It's HTL remake of Vinaashak [original Nightmare juggernaut]. Remakes of Destroyer and Frigate/Carrier are on the way. First generation of Nightmares are inspired by shivans and shadows from B5 as I remember. I'd like to keep this, consider it as small tribute to original Aldos' Nightmares :). Second generation are insect-like.
Jugg belong to first generation, both fighters to second. All will be revealed in a proper time, in the campaign.

Hard to say. We're finishing, but... We're finishing from a year o__O,mostly due to my lack of discipline for myself and laziness. A lot of missions have been rebuilded from last year. We're making last bugfixing and balancing for them, then I will finish loadingscreens, cbanims and other addonital things. Maybe 2-3 months, maybe fewer.

Archivement system and one checkpoint to go. Everything is almost finished. I started to build modpack for second part of the Shadow Genesis... Called Shadow Genesis 2: The Silent Eyes. Hah, I must say - finishing mod is the hardest part to do. Bugfixing, optimalization and testing... Hardest part of the job.

I seriously can not wait to play this campaign! I have finished pretty much all the "major" campaigns/mods for freespace since I bought it for 6 dollars last June (I also play other games offcourse, and I love to watch Anime too XD), and I would really, really like to have another big awesome campaign to get into. I also love that it will have a lot of missions, means it will take me some time to finish it XD

I can only say... You will recive everything listed [and much more :D]. We would like to estimate a release date, but we did a few times and mod is still unreleased. Real life issues, procrastination etc. We're just humans. I can only say, we are really close to release.

Also I feel honored when I'm reading things like this :]

5 missions to final testing and bugfixing ^^, we have a little problem with checkpoints and archivements in mission 38 [2 nanojumps, 2 checkpoints, 1 archivement] so it's a bit difficult to fix, but we will soon handle this. Stay focused :D

Suggestion: why not make a call to help you in whatever area you need as a freelance, to help you with this, looks like you all have too much work and too few people/spare-time to dedicate to such a  huge project.

We are working on second project that is consuming all of our free time. And in fact we have specified vision of upcoming SG 2.0. Of course we use external help, but we are currently satisfied with our way of working. I have a lot of experiance with large teams and number of archived projects are good proof that this is not a good choice.
