I want to be able to run a standalone server, without pxo.

Uhhh, you can already ;)
But, maybe a new master server integration, that would be cool ;)

hmm.. I can't get past where it tries to alidate the missions.... odd

Been a while since I did it, mind you, but when I ran a server way way back, I did it IP only, no PXO lobby and no (to my recollection) validation.
Might be a good thing to ask the Squad War types, I know they have servers up all the time.

Standalone without PXO:
after backing up \data\multi.cfg file of the standalone change it to
+name Brummel's cemetery
+high_update
+max_players 8
or something like that and start it.
add in multi settings of pilots' comps the IP of the standalone server, put PXO to OFF (= multi settings of playing in LAN), but of course go online before starting FS2..:). You will see the standalone - open the game - voila..
Perhaps a "Squad War type" could help a little..
