Title: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: 0rph3u5 on December 26, 2005, 07:37:36 am
This mod has a problem:
Whenever Fan-mission or -campaigns are released they are released in their own threads. Nobody is able to find anything until he/she searched the whole board...
Let's make this thread a collection of all avalibe missions and campaigns which do not come from the team of TBP. This allows anybody to easly find missions. I hope for everybody's help.

Not a bad idea 0rph3u5 but you might consider looking into Skippy's Campaign List (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,20956.0.html) too.

I think there may be enough to actually make a seperate TBP section.

What about making some campaigns "more official" (extensive testing through many people etc.) and host them on the Web-Page..?

I think this would be an idea......
but:
1. where do we get the webspace from?
2. some campaign designers (including me) might have no idea how to make a proper website... So we need helpers for those...

The thread only exists to let people tell Skippy what to put on his page. The website itself is much cleaner and I doubt Skippy would mind having a TBP section.

Besides I'm not saying that this thread is a bad idea. Just that you should maximise your pimpage by making sure everything in on Skippy's list too. :)

3 months ago I have made 2 missions set during the Dilgar War timeline...
Which I would like to share with other fans, unfortunately as TBP site had a small makeover all the files were removed...

The missions are called:
First contact - an EA cruiser on a peace relief mission finds itself suddenly in the middle of an unprovoked                                             massacre ( it happens before "official" EA involvment in the Dilgar War)

Red dagger - an EA task force seizes a desperately fighting damaged Dilgar cruiser to capture vital intelligence data
that can alter the course of the conflict

Please say to whom should I send those?
If someone has some free webspace to host them I would be gradeful...  ;) / they are about 60 kb each/

Skippy tends to be fairly quick with this sort of thing. If he has the free time it will probably be quite quick.

*Amazed at Karajorma for resisting*

Okay well a TBP campaign list is an extremely good idea. Especially if it has links to homepages and or locations where the campaigns can be downloaded. Would be TBP players need a one stop shop where they can go and get missions and the like. You know a dedicated campaign/mission hosting site probably wouldn't go amiss if it sounds like something someone would like to do. Maybe an unofficial TBP fan/FREDers site.

By the way the "official" team definitely wouldn't go for hosting such a thing themselves. Rightly so. They have enough on their plates building releases. It's hard work you know! :)

Oh while I'm here, add Babylonian History X to whatever list gets created, and Raider Wars I guess.
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns

Well, I'm pretty sure we can host an unofficial TBP site + plus some other stuff for unofficial campaign makers. ;)

And by 'we' I don't mean me and my three other personalities, but StarGame. ;) Things are pretty hectic there currently (techinal stuff), so it may take some time to organize things. We'll get back on this... :)

Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: Stormcrow on January 06, 2006, 07:14:06 pm
I have a plain and simple question, and I don't think that it would be worth opening an own thread for it:

So, the Heat 'em Up Demo-ReadMe tells me to copy the data into my "missions-folder" in the Data-folder. The same with other unofficial missions/campaigns.
Since I don't have such a folder in my data-folder, there is a certain problem ;)
Also creating a folder named "missions" did not help. So, what am I doing wrong?

Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: aipz on January 07, 2006, 03:21:19 am
The path should look like this:
C:\TBP\data\missions\
there you should insert single missions and custom made campaigns which consist of xxxx.fs files(missions)
and xxxx.fc file (campaign file)

You should access custom made campaigns by selecting the appropriate one from the "campaigns menu"
and then "continue" from the main menu

To fly single missions you enter "techroom" than select "mission simulator" and than choose between
current "campaign missions" and "single missions"

This isn't hard to work around  ;)...
Howewer when using campaigns provided by madaboutgames you should follow his guidelines, because they contain sound files and even cutscenes...

--Inquiry for Unofficial Campaign Makers--

Would you be interested in similar project hosting like here at HLP and over at GW & GTD, meaning webspace and public + private forum? Downside is that TBP scene is centered in here.

What about the unofficial TBP site? Any need for that now that Skippy's site covers TBP campaigns...
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: IPAndrews on January 11, 2006, 05:53:32 am
I would be interested in having hosting for both of my campaigns. I'm not entirely sure what I'd do with it mind. Post some screen shots, trailer movies and stuff like that I suppose. Oh and download links too, possibly. Raider Wars isn't really an official TBP campaign anyway. Never was. In fact has anyone on the team ever referred to it as an official campaign? It was released at the same time as 3.2 yes but that doesn't say anything about it's... erm... officiality.
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: 0rph3u5 on January 11, 2006, 07:43:53 am
I would be interested in a hosted website for "The Black Hand" and "Awakening of the Beast" too...
My idea was to have website for giving away some infos on the stories main characters (but not too much) some special backgrounds, show some screenshots and the links for the downloads
but I've no know-how for this (someone will have to help me)
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: Primus on January 11, 2006, 07:47:44 am
We will help with the website and setting it up. :)

StarGame will be moving to a dedicated server soon, so after that we can start arranging the hosting and all, unless mr. StarGame says otherwise.

I want to complete the list here and I've still got a campaign ("Tale of EAS Janus - Earth Minbari War") and several missions (Mars Defence Force series; "Demon hunting") here at my place which are not on the list here

MDF and "Demon hunting" will be added tomorrow exceot something is speaking against it...
but the ToEJ campaign is quite old and I don't got the time for a full restoration (the original campaign file isn't working with current builds, background has to be updated and the table file which comes with the campaign does not include more craft than needed for the campaign)
Is someone here to do that?
I've made some steps to update the background but this was rather choosing backgrounds on opportunity and I just installed the braches from one mission to the other...

@Primus: Thank you for the offer, but at thre moment I am much more engaged in doing my final exams for school. And soon, university awaits *smirk*

/EDIT: Since there is always some talk about several different builds of this and that and compatibilities etc, and since I have not been able to get Heat 'em Up and Survivor work out, is there some kind of a newbie's guide or "TBD for Dummies" aroud. Would appreciate it. I use to follow the instructions from the ReadMes, but I get either the "atempt to load mission failed"-message or just anice crash. Even though I managed to create a "missions"-subfolder and other missions and campaigns work alright.

This get's a little to far ot, doesn't it? Ah hell. (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/4155/images/s-wstar.jpg)  :wtf:

Hi storm crow, any campaign which is in a vp file eg. b5 heat em up must be put into the folder where you installed the babylon project (c:/the babylon project/).  This vp file is basicaly a zip which points tbp to where the various files should be placed, its as simple as that for .vp campaigns.  All other campiagns which just have certain folders eg data/missions, data/voice etc should be placed in the relevant folders i the data diectory. :)

A quick cut, paste and clean up from my FS2 FAQ. Wherever it says FS2 read TBP :)

Quote
I've just installed FS2_Open and I want to install a mod.

Be very wary of what the readmes that come with mods tell you to do. Many mods were written for FS2, before FS2_Open had its new mod managing features or by people only vaguely aware of what they do. For this reason I'll give you a golden rule.

NEVER install anything to Freespace2\Data regardless of what the instructions say.

If you are following this guide there is no reason to install there.

   1.  Check the path to your FreeSpace 2 folder - The path to your folder can not contain a space. C:\Program Files\FreeSpace2\ won't work. Move your entire Freespace2 folder to C:Games\Freespace2 or something (note that you will have to move the folder back if you every try to uninstall the game).
   2. Create a folder for the install - Make a folder within your main Freespace2 folder. Make sure that this folder has no spaces and no hyphens. Apart from that you can call the folder anything. The mod's name is generally the best thing to use.
   3. Install any VP files - If the mod has any VP files stick them straight into the new folder you created.
   4. Install any data files - If the mod has any other files then make a new folder called data inside the mod folder you just created. Follow the instructions using this new Data folder as if it were Freespace2\Data (i.e if told to stick a file in Freespace2\Data\Tables you stick it in Freespace2\ModName\Data\Tables).

Thanks, also to karajorma, but unfortunately, it didn't produce much more than some curses I do better not repeat  :wtf: :) Just plainly don't know what to do. Fresh installation, an own folder for it, calling several voodoo-gods... nope :(

I run an
Athlon XP 1800+ (never overclocked)
Windows 2000 Professional

I think windows 2000 could be the source of your probs.  This operating systenm is based on NT technology and isnt really suited for games.  Try it on win 98/ME or XP ;)
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: karajorma on January 25, 2006, 09:47:52 am
Umm. XP is based on the same NT core as Windows 2k. They just lobotomised it in the the Home version so that you wouldn't notice.

Lets see if I can figure out Stormcrow's problem.

EDIT : Ah. Just noticed one vitally important step was missing in the little guide I posted. My bad.

Once you have done all those steps run the launcher. Go to the mods tab (or features tab in launcher 5.2) and click on the select mod button. Select the folder you just created.

Now click run.

Just to echo Karajorma's point, I've been using Windows 2000 Professional for several years with TBP and various other games and it's always worked just fine.
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns

Quite a few games do work on 2000 but quite a few don`t as well, Never tried tbp on 2000 so it was just a possibility.:)
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns
Post by: Stormcrow on January 26, 2006, 01:09:46 pm
This might be just the point, karajorma, thanks. Will try it asap. Just to besure, the launcher coming with Heat'emUp or the original one? Well, trying both is not that much work, ist it. ;-)

Well, 2k never made any problems so far, from ye olde games like starcraft, fallout 2 or age of empires 1 to ut2004, deus ex 2 etc. In fact, it worked far better and also with far less bluescreens than 98, which I had before.

Either launcher should work but I'd suggest using 5.3. It's what I use so it makes it much easier for me to remember what to tell you to do. :)

1. HEU links will be changed to lead to the HEU downloads page...
2. all missions stored on the babcom.henna-boy server should still be working with 3.3 - an exception is "The Black Hand - First Steps Into The Abyss" which I'll give a new playtest-run during the weekend to install the last 3.3 fixes and changes and which will be put back where it was on Monday...

both signs and sword of the empire are fs2 files.. I tried putting them into the bab project folder and the dont show up in missions.

Yeah, all the links ive seen do indeed lead to the site, but the only Heat em Up that I see on the site is Season 2 and there isnt a season 1 download there.  I get the feeling that the page that these link to is a bit out of date since Severed Dreams is listed as "Coming Soon" and I have it.  Unless thats a beta, but I dont think it is.

This  is about The Black Hand; the wav. files , in which folder must I put them cuz if I put al the files from the zip package in /data/missions en then try to make a vp file, it won't work.

I've taken care of the mission list again... checked everything and threw out all old and useless links; hope MAG can come around the corner with some new ones

What you mean by FS2_OPEN 3.6.9.
Please excuse me if this is a stupid question, but im new to the TBP

TBP is based on the FS2_Open game engine. The .exe file included in the download can be upgraded to later and (usually) better versions of the engine which (hopefully) have less bugs in it.

The most recent version which is generally available is 3.6.9.

Excuse the silly question, but I really can't figure this out. Where do i extract these mission files to so I can play them? And, I assume I run them through the mission simulator in the tech room right?

Indeed, it is is silly. In the main Babylon Project folder and then you select them from tech room. :)

The path should look like this:
C:\TBP\data\missions\
there you should insert single missions and custom made campaigns which consist of xxxx.fs files(missions)
and xxxx.fc file (campaign file)

You should access custom made campaigns by selecting the appropriate one from the "campaigns menu"
and then "continue" from the main menu

To fly single missions you enter "techroom" than select "mission simulator" and than choose between
current "campaign missions" and "single missions"

Does anybody agree with me when I say that we should have an updated thread of the missions and campagins that everyone has created?
Title: Re: Missions and Campaigns

if you guys email or pm me your campagin/missions, I'll start a updated thread of everything.

Stargate you can be our agent. I send you forth into the great wide world of the internet. Go forth and find B5 fans. Bring them back here and get them to make missions. Off you go :)

That's something I've always wanted to see. I've never had time to hunt out all the old campaigns but it would be nice to have them around so they could be converted to 34.

can I have some help hunting down all the old missions and campaigns so that they can be updated to 3,4?

Well that's the point. I couldn't find them :). i know Triv has ITB, but I've asked him for that many times and he's never given it to me. I think the deal is that if he did give it to me he'd have to kill me.

I'm easier to get on ICQ, and I'm working on modifying Severed Dreams for the EACW campaign. Well I will be next week. But sure knock yourself out on the version I uploaded before. It's public domain as far as I'm concerned.
