Game crashing at startup

Alright, I just downloaed the base 3.0, the update, and all the other things, but when I start up Windows XP crashes it.  I went to the registry tab, and it was pointed at SOFTWARE\Volition\Freespace2 and said
"An error has occurred reading from the registry, cancelling,"

I don't know if anyone has a fix for this or whatnot, but please help,

That happens to me too with my FS2 main game.  I'm not sure what caused it, or how to fix it.  I reinstalled FS2 in an attempt to correct another problem (unsuccessfully I might add), and suddenly the registry was back.  Unfortunately, its now unreadable by the launcher again.  I guess I'll just have to learn RegEdit.

There is a note about that in the readme.
It has absolutely no effect on TBP.
