Title: Wish Herkie423 luck
Post by: CT27 on May 31, 2017, 02:24:21 pm
As you may or may not know, user Herkie423 has made the campaign "The Aftermath" and its remake "The Aftermath:  Reboot".  Currently, he's working on the sequel "The Aftermath II:  Blue Guardian" (I'm helping with writing the plot on that one).

I've got a couple PMs from him (which I have been given permission to talk about), and something very serious has came up.  There is currently an Islamic insurgency going on in parts of the Philippines and the Philippines President Duerte has invoked martial law in parts of the country.  Herkie423 was part of the Philippine army at some point in the past but now he has actually been called back up to the front lines of this conflict.  If I understood his PM correctly, he's not working as a grunt in front line combat, but as an advisor to a base on the front lines (still a dangerous situation).

This isn't a thread to debate politics or religion but just to wish a fellow FS modder good luck in a dangerous situation.  He also asked for thoughts and prayers for his fellow soldiers.  Herkie also said he may check in from time to time.

(Mods can move this topic if there's a better forum)

Thanks for the well wishers. My fellow soldiers are looking over my shoulders right now as I write this. They thought this is Facebook  :D. Things are pretty messy and I got a couple of close calls back there. A lot of civilian evacuees, thousands. Although, I am not assigned in DIRECT ACTION combat, I go with recon units for battle assessments. Either way, I am still in the middle of it and help with the fighting if required. The good news is the conflict is winding down. I hope so, but we are anticipating "spill overs" to the next city. I can definitely say that this Mauti rebel group, affiliated with the Isis, is worst than the Shivans, they employ human shields, take hostages and executing people at will. War is hell.

Once again, thanks to all... I got to go now.

I'm kinda divided now between wishing you luck and hoping that these mother****ers all die.

I suppose I should be more biased towards the first. So, well... Make it out alive, man. And sane.

I got a PM from Herkie (and permission to share):

"Things are stabilizing here.  We have the terrorist cornered. Our priority right now is to save civilians. My CO did not send me to the field today, a little rest. I may be able to come home by the end of the month. However, they also said that I will stay active until I retire and they will promote me. But that's OK. I will most likely be working behind the desk at HQ in my city."

PM update from Herkie423:

"I am back in my hometown. My job over there is finished, another officer took over my posting. The war is winding down. But I am not discharged with the remainder of the Martial Law period. It was hell, bro. Chaos. We have lots of casualties, me included, a shrapnel in my leg, just a flesh wound. It is good to be back because I am also worried about my business. I still have to report to our base regularly. On the good side, I can resume my campaign work (I actually do this at night)."

Wow.
If he is permitted and wants to talk about it, I'd love to hear his story.

Welcome back. Glad your safe.
How much of that 'taking hostages, human shields, execution at will' did you actually witness? How many terrorists total were in your city's?

I was attached to the marine battalion intelligence so I witnessed most of it until I got hit by a shrapnel when a grenade blew just ten feet from me. I will not be discharged until I will retire effectively. My military status is active now. I wish I can say that I'm safe but in two weeks, after I am more or less healed (just a flesh wound), I will be sent there again to continue my effort there. Contrary to what I said weeks ago that the war is dying out, there is still fierce fighting especially the Mauti Rebels are cornered. A cornered fox is even more dangerous.

Asking a fellow (now retired from armed service) Soldier, what's your service rank and trade/MoS brother?

I got a PM from Herkie earlier today:

"By the way,.... Call me captain. I got my promotion!

I am going back to the war again next week or two until my wounds are fully healed. It might not happen because the conflict is winding down---But that's what I said  weeks ago, right? and it's not yet over."

What regiment and trade though?

What regiment and trade though?

I don't think he wants to give his active regiment name out now.

Anyways, I got a PM from him and an update to share:

With his new rank of Captain, Herkie isn't a field operative anymore.  He's working in a forward operating base outside of the combat zone (but it's still close enough that one never knows...he told me to say this).  He brought his laptop and is doing work on FS stuff in his free time.

I should be said cap badge (if his army is organised the same way as mine). For example, artillery, combat engineer or logistical support.

Captain, Battalion S2 present posting. Assign at HQ. Before that, I was a lieutenant with the MBLT-5 (Marine Battalion Landing Team, infantry) in the 90's. I was put to reserve status after serving 3 years in the Jolo conflict where I was shot, a casualty. After that, I became a musician, a pianist/keyboard player and a singer, worked in several countries with a band (some years as a solo performer). I stopped in 2010 and put up two grocery stores. In May, this year, I am back in the military. I was called to service partly because of my knowledge of rebel guerrilla tactics and experience, and partly, a friend's recommendation--- comrade during my combat years, still active and a high ranking official.

There are many trades in each reg though.  I feel some translation is being lost here.  :p

We do have an "MOS" equivalent here, the specialty ID number. But that is already specific. I'm sorry I can't give that.:)

Keep him in your thoughts and prayers.  He hasn't been on this site in over a month according to his profile (sometimes in the past he's at least been able to come and get a quick post in).

Hopefully he'll get back soon and safe.
