Title: newbie - basic questions
Post by: TheDoctor on May 25, 2018, 06:46:04 pm
Hi all

I am really a newbie at this and I have some basic questions that I didn't see answered in the FAQ or using the search tool.  If this is covered somewhere, please forgive me for asking here:

I am using the FSO Installer v2.3.1 with a pretty fast Core i5-7400 3Ghz computer, a nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB GPU, and 8GB RAM.

1.  Everywhere I look, I see the current version of Freespace Open 3.7.4.  However, when I run the installer it gives me an option for 3.8.0.  Do I want 3.8.0?

2. I am running Windows 10-64 bit.  I have options for:

- FreeSpace Open 3.8.0 Win32 Standard
- FreeSpace Open 3.8.0 Win32 AVX
- FreeSpace Open 3.8.0 Win64 Standard
- FreeSpace Open 3.8.0 Win64 AVX

I installed it once only installing both Win32 options (at least I think I did both).  I noticed the Win64 options later and tried installing them.  FS2 didn't want to run anymore.

3. When I am running the wxLauncher program, it gives me an option to Validate (I think that's the word it used) the different mods installed.  When I click the buttons to validate, it doesn't seem to do anything.  What does that do, if anything?

4. I am guessing I want the 2014FSU MediaVPs and not the 3.6.12 version.  Am I correct?

5. Do I want to install the "Freespace Port Mission Upgrade" if I install the Freespace Port Media VPs and Silent Threat: Reborn?

Sorry for such basic questions; but, I am really finding it difficult to find basic installation information for the Installer.

Thank you for any help.

Jeff

Knossos (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94068.0) answers pretty much all your questions.
1.  Yes.
2.  Probably 64-bit AVX, but Knossos will sort this out for you.
3.  N/A.
4.  On Knossos, they're called the 3.7.2 MediaVPs, which makes it a little clearer that they are newer.
5.  If you want to play FS1 on the FS2 engine, don't install the Freespace Port Mission Upgrade.  Those missions are somewhat changed from the original.

So I downloaded Knossos and got it installed.  How do I install the Media MediaVPs with it?

Thank you for your help.

Just check MediaVPs. Simple.

Go to the "Explore" tab and look for "MediaVPs 2014" (you can also use the search field at the top for that). Click "Install" when hovering over the field and use the default options. After clicking "OK", Knossos will download everything you need.

Obviously something is wrong then...

I typed "MediaVPs 2014" (without quotes) into the search box on the "Explore" tab; and, I get a message "No mods found."

It doesn't show in the list of all mods either.

   Help!

Ok, I tried searching for just "Media" (without quotes) and found them.  Whew!  Sorry about that.

Are the mission briefings and main screens (where you go to a campaign, change settings, etc.) suppose to be 4:3?  My mouse can move beyond to the left and right edges of the screen.  The game missions play in 16:9.

Thanks.

It's supposed to be that way to keep the aspect ratio of the original interface art.

The mod search field isn't case-sensitive, is it?  If so, that should be changed.

No it's not.  The problem was that there is no "MediaVPs 2014" mod, only "MediaVPs", of which 3.7.2 (aka 2014) is one version and 3.6.12 is another.

That's interesting. Searching for "mediavps 2014" when that version is installed works in the "Home" tab but not in the "Explore" tab. I'll let ngld know that there is a bug in the search function.

Then I hope this bug will be resolved as soon as possible.

The bug was that my local version of the MediaVPs title was "MediaVPs 2014" instead of the correct "MediaVPs". The change was made on the server side at some point so my local version wasn't updated.

Make it so, and ensure that this will not happen on any mods.
