(sorry for any dumbness in advance)
EDIT: crud wrong board.

So, Today I clicked on the FRED.exe (the latest stable) to find that this happened: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." and then the version of FRED I was using vanished. I reinstalled It and ran as an admin, only for the same thing to happen.

Then, with the latest nightly, ^{(fred2_open_3_7_5_SSE2_20160719_19181b0 as of this post)} I got this: "The program cannot run because SDL2.dll Is missing from your computer" So I made sure that I had It, and I put It in the windows registry. but now It just crashes with "FRED2 has stopped working" with windows shouting "Debug Assertion failed! Line: 88 Expression: buffer != nullptr " and a 28kb FRED2 log. (pasted on end of post)

I should note that this was with no Mods, using them with FRED made no difference.
I just need to figure out If this Is a problem with
A: My computer.
B: The recent windows update that is already notorious for braking things.
C: Something else? FRED worked before, so why It stopped today Is beyond me.

Also, as the Log says my FS install is on the E drive.
I even tried turning It Off and On again, and still this occurs. any help at all will be thanked for. finishing my mod only using notepad would be . . . hard.

There is a slight incompatibility between SDL and MFC (the framework we're using for the rest of FRED). We had addressed it when this was all in antipodes (our old testing branch for big features), but then it resurfaced after the merge for no good reason, so now we have to reapply the fix we had in there the first time. The fault is entirely on our side.

So, Today I clicked on the FRED.exe (the latest stable) to find that this happened: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." and then the version of FRED I was using vanished. I reinstalled It and ran as an admin, only for the same thing to happen.

Sounds like an antivirus program falsely detecting it as malicious and promptly deleting or quarantining it. What antivirus software are you running?

Avast, latest version.  It gave me no warnings however.

Well, just because it didn't give you a warning doesn't mean it wasn't responsible for the executable disappearing. If you temporarily disable it and suddenly FRED 3.7.4 works, you'll have an answer.

It doesn't, unfortunately; it's basically "this algorithm looks suspicious to me", which we can't really do anything about. Only thing you can really do is just tell Avast! to ignore it.

The most recent working build of FRED is associated with nightly builds from July 14th.

Also, I have Avast as well and every time I start up a new build of FRED, is goes through a scan of the program and flags it as unsafe and deletes the program.  I've learned to just abort the scan when the window comes up.  It also does a scan of FSO whenever I select a new build in the launcher (even before I start up FSO) but it always says that there's nothing wrong with it.  Something about FRED rubs Avast the wrong way.

Well, you can submit the file to Avast! as a false positive.  Although VirusTotal lists Avast as reporting the file clean, which is odd.

Can anyone using Avast! with the latest definitions check if this still happens with the latest definitions, and, if so, post a screenshot of the Virus Vault or and / or log of the incident here?
