Title: Need beta testers for four missions
Post by: Slasher on July 21, 2009, 06:08:31 am
Actually just one mission right now, but the remaining three will be uploaded progressively over the next week or so.  The first part is right here - it requires Project Zathras to be installed so if you don't have that and don't plan on getting it then this won't work.  Let me know how things go performance wise during the intro mission, and of course how difficult/impossible the first actual mission turned out to be.

Hey, this is really well done   I am impressed would be an understatement.
Of course I am not sure were the story will go but the first mission is definitly something. While I have a campaign WIP dealing with a Midwinter Cruiser during the civil war too, I must admit this mission was something I am pretty sure nobody has done or even thought of before. Awesome job.

Died just once, made it without any problems the second time around.

Stuff I noticed:

- Try setting all the enemy ships to neutral which should prevent the combat music to start. When hostilities start, just switch all their IFFs.
- Add an "EAS" before the name of any EA vessel. Adds even more atmosphere
- I can order around MedEvac 3. Intended?
- How about giving the player Venom2s instead of Venom1s?

Lots of cool little details in that mission, like the S&R teams picking up disabled Furies. Well done! Reminds me of some WCS stuff.
Nice background too by the way.

Now send the rest will ya  ?

I dunno why, but I see all the NOVA textures messed up a bit.

Did you remove the old Zathras install before you installed the new one?  If you have a FUBAR.vp and a Nameplates.vp then you didn't and that is most likely the cause.

I removed all old zathras files. I got the nameplates.vp which was included in new zathras package though.

Try clearing your cache folder.  It's picking up an old uvmap from somewhere.  Check for a nova.pof in data\models, zathras\data\models or anywhere else.

If that doesn't do it run debug and attach the fs2_open.log.

Sorry I dropped the ball on this but temperatures around here reached highs not seen in roughly fifty to sixty years.  Records were set throughout the state; it got to be around 106° F (41° C) where I live.  Like many in the area I don't have a place with air conditioning, central or otherwise, so the weather prohibited being indoors for long periods of time.

It's starting to cool off so I feel better coming back to the computer.   :)

that problem seems to be caused by missing new NOVA.pof
The new nova textures are double size, featuring both sides of fighterbay for means of nameplate usage.
A new nova pof file uses these new textures that vary in size.

Is the new nova pof present ?

Well it worked in multi yesterday.  Only Nova related problems where the shine map for non-nameplated ships was the wrong one and Vid used -name instead of _name.  Neither of which would result in the effect in the pics.

 Kinda dropped the ball here, didn't I?

Well I guess it's time to start working on it again.  Another voice actor got materials to me last month so I'm going to implement that, and even though I don't have everything I wanted, I kind of just want to release what I have now so I'm not sitting on it forever.

Okay, I got the second part of the beta put together.  More raw than the last release but it was starting to turn into vaporware.  :nervous:

Vid's feedback:

Loved it. Imaginative mission design and a unique style of designing, it's simply damn good.
Different from my stuff which is GOOD because recently, there was nothing more than my stuff  :nervous:

Things I noticed:

M2:
- Alpha Wing has no orders after the shuttle docks. They fly around and crash into the station
- the OpenLevel concept is not really explained. Plus, the directive "Search the Area" appears at the start of the mission. Recommendation: Make it appear AFTER it docks and change it to "Explore area" and add a "now lets keep an eye out for something valuable" msg or something
- the keyboard press sequences could be problematic for some players. They worked for me but be sure to use the $keyboard command$  Didn't look into the fredding of the mission so if you have used that, ignore this post.
- IMPORTANT!!!  Add directives for the different "quests" you get during that mission.
- You should probably lock the secondary weapons (or even all) for all fighters attacking Narn ship. They wouldn't start launching missiles at the vessel the intend to use next week would they? This we cover you should probably even be realised using waypoints.

M3:
- You use the Hyperspace thunder effects (comes with the lightning storm setting) which is totally unfitting
- Why does everybody accept strange attackers so easily? Definitly add some "WHAT ARE THOSE" and so on lines during the attack. Some dialoge is always nice.
- Music during the attack?  The silence (or the thunder) is very powerful in the sequence before, but I think you should add a soundtrack during the battle. One would be particularly fitting but maybe your opinion differs from mine, so I don't name it  ;)

Yes, sorry it took me so long to reply.  Thanks for playing and the recommendations, Vidmaster!  :)

Definitely going to go through and edit some stuff, plus I'm still hoping to net a voice actor or two before I do another release.
