Title: Freelook doesn't seem to work in game??
Post by: ShogunOrta on September 06, 2012, 11:38:50 pm
What happens is that when I'm in the cockpit, I can look around but it's only in this "quick snap look" type of mode. I was wondering if there was a virtual cockpit mode like in traditional flight sims where the user can freely pan the view about the cockpit.

I did see in the key bindings section that there's an option for a FreeLook mode. It's default bound to the numpad 0 key. I tried pressing the 0 in game but that quick snap view mode persisted. Is this the only type of virtual cockpit mode in the game or is there a more traditional flight sim version that I'm missing how to implement it here?

Thanks.

P.S. AWwwwwwwwwwsome game! Seriously the fights look just like the TV show!. I've been waiting for a game like this based on BSG ever since well....BSG. It's been a long time. You guys did a hell of a job! Oh...and it's free!?!? Yeah, thanks again.

Freelook at the moment only works with TrackIR which is a head tracking device. Freespace engine is pretty old and the free look options were pretty limited when the engine originally shipped. I'd like to get freelook working with the mouse someday but it's going to require some thinking to make it play right with how Freespace currently handles mouse options and such.

There's also a "padlock view" that you can bind to a key in the control config options. It's not quite freelook, but it's something. :)

Yeah, I was a little bummed about this one as well, considering how frakking cool the cockpit is!  I wanted to see more of it!

Perhaps, some kind of Shift/Ctrl/Alt Hold Down + Mouse Move?  That would make the most sense.  Then you just press some key to snap back forward.

Are there any plans to have some kind of minor g-force related screen panning when turning or using the afterburner?  Basically, if you hit a hard right turn your virtual head moves to the left.  If you hit the afterburner, you head snaps back a little so, the screen looks up a tad.

Sorry for posting something to this kinda old thread and suggesting into the Tech Help which is something wrong lol. If you don't mind: IMO it could work as seperated control not for use while combat or advanced flight. More like a key config overwriting the assigned Numpad keys to provide a free mouse panorama cockpit view similar to the TrackIR view. By pressing the first key again, mode turns back into basic cockpit view. It's just a cheap trick you might say, but to me it would be similar to the 2 cockpit views Orbiter space sim has. I would use it often to get to know the cockpit and knowing where what is and how it looks with closed eyes. Anyway, Cylons could not profit from this, only Colonials.

BTW I saw that Diaspora TrackIR vid and would like to post here to provide the thread with some moving images (you might saw it already):

Freelook mode has been disabled in FSO trunk builds ever since the TrackIR stuff was implemented. I've made a patch for FSO that brings FreeLook mode back, but it needs more testing done on it to make sure I didn't bork something else along the way.

Freelook Mode (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=68362.msg1642176#new)

That links you to a r9226 build with the Freelook patch in it, but I'm not 100% sure that .exe will work with Diaspora.

It should. Most of Diaspora's changes are in trunk by now.
