There's also immersion to consider. It's more immersing with voice acting. I can deal without it, and do when playing the old Inferno R1, but it's a pain in the ass. Yes, voice acting delays things, but when it's done right, like in Derelict (admittedly Derelict could have used some cleanup on the voice files. Dynamic mics are best for voiceover work), it just works. Alpha 2 is brilliantly cynical. Whoever voice acted Mackie was perfect in the role in Derelict. And a lot of other voices were done well. The non-American accents make it seem more like Humanity had gone to the stars, not just the USA.

Look, give a combat pilot too much to read inside the cockpit and they will die in a real dogfight. I know this is only a simulation, but the same paradigm holds true.

Currently I assume that real combat pilots have the privilege of voice acting... I mean, radio. They need it and they get it. We, on the other hand, just play a game, with the unstaoppable feature known as pause. We can freeze the action and read what they were saying. And the Creators of missions can keep the dialogue at an acceptable minimum so that it can be read in the middle of a fight without pauses.

You also have to consider the fact that voice acting is a ton of work.  Especially if you want it done right.

I don't think I'll be doing voice producing for any campaign after ST:R.  Everybody will love it, and it makes the campaign that much more awesome, but it's terribly draining.

Which reminds me. I need to get that dynamic mic I was talking about. If only I hadn't been sick this week. Even if I had the mic right now, my voice isn't in the best shape to do any voice acting.
