OSX 10.5.8 PPC issues continue...
so i decided to test out the release candidate and see if my problems http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65944.0 have been alleviated.  it seems that they haven't.  I've tested with both the Inferno build and the regular build, both with the same result.  This crash is not isolated to a single level or encounter, as I continuously encounter it on at least two different levels, but does seem to have some correlation to missles and/or explosions.  here's the inferno crashlog:

There are a few who do, but there's not many who are capable of doing anything about it.  It is good to be updated though.  Without a dev capable of attaching GDB to it and tracing out the crash, it could be hard to track down.  Only other option is have someone familiar with GDB on a x86 mac walk you through it in IRC or something.  Not sure who's even that competent with Xcode though.  Possibly Echelon9, Tinman, or maybe even blowfish.

You should be able to access GDB from within Xcode so you can probably just read up on C++ debuggin via Xcode.  Should be friendlier docs from Apple's website.

well i fooled around a bit and tried to debug this situation... i used a guide https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Debugging_on_Mac_OS_X to try and do it from xcode.  here is the output from the crash:

It looks for those files to get the information necessary to display useful debug information.

Bottom line is that you apparently need to build your own executable, otherwise you won't be able to actually run gdb the way it's meant to be run.

Ah, right.  Forgot to mention that part.  There are more coders who should be able to help you with that step of the problem.  You basically need to check out the source code, extract the framework, open the Xcode project file under projects/Xcode, and go from there.  Wiki should have help on that.  Xcode should have come with subversion since you'll need it.

well after some fooling around i managed to get fs2 compiled on my ppc.  i used xcode3.1.2, went to the svn and grabbed everything.  built but had about 152 warnings, mostly repeats stating
"warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in function 'exit'"  (in jerror.c:78), "invalid access to non-static data member "hud_info::Player_shield_coords of NULL object (perhaps the 'offsetof' macro was used incorrectly) (in hudparse.cpp), a couple "comparison is always true due to limited range of data type" errors, a couple "NULL used in arithmetic" errors, a couple "comparison is always true due to limited range of data type" errors, etc.

anyhow, i compiled an inferno version and a regular version.  this is the result of debugging through xcode.  i definitely don't know where to look for everything, but this is what i came up with:

GDB: Program received signal:  "EXC_BAD_ACCESS" at line 333 in fvi.cpp:
                                 if (p0->a1d < min->a1d) {

this was in the debugger console, not sure what it means but i am researching it now:
This GDB was configured as "powerpc-apple-darwin".unable to read unknown load command 0x80000022

If taylor broke PPC 3 years ago and no one noticed until now I'm gonna lol.  But that's the last time that file was changed, and it was that function that was rewritten :)

Okay, so this is the same error you have reported previously. Which is good in that it means the error is still happening in the same function.  The bad part is that you now need to figure out which pointer is the invalid one.  I would suggest starting with checking to see if p0 or min are NULL.

Check the gdb manual if you need to find out how to check the values of the pointers.

As for the warnings that is fairly normal, but just for fun check to see if any of those warnings are from fvi.cpp.

using xcode's debugger i am able to see that:
min = 0xcaad682a
max = 0xcaad6836
p0 = 0x1ad01a0
pdir = 0x1ad0188
hitpt = 0xbfffd008
inside = 0x1
i = 0x0
maxt = [3]
middle = [3]
which_plane = 0xffffffff
candidate_plane  = [3]

most of these values have further variables that i can access via expansion triangles (or whatever they are called).  i dont see any that are set to NULL.

none of the warnings came from fvi.cpp

hope we are getting closer :)

The values are p0 and min are what they are because those are just memory addresses, as they are both pointers.  Hopefully they're not null, but we probably need to know what p0->a1d[0] and min->a1d[0] are, since i seems to be 0 at the time of the crash.  Really, just seeing what p0->a1d and min->a1d are at the time they're passed into the function would help.  You might read into setting breakpoints with the debugger too.  It's usually as simple as clicking somewhere on the left edge of the code editor pane.

i am not so sure where i should set the breakpoints.  i know how to do it, but don't have any experience tracking down values of memory addresses.  i tried breaking just before the for statement and didnt really get any results.  here is what my debugger looks like:

if i right click on any variable, i can choose to View as Memory which opens up a window like so: 


i am not sure if this is what you are talking about...  i may need to spend a couple hrs reading debugging tutorials!  :)

well i have continued to look at this problem...  i have determined i just don't know what i am looking for.  i realize that the program crashes each time @ if (p0->a1d < min->a1d) {   I look at p0, and find that x=-9.8blahblah, y=15.36blah, z=-9.2blah  and if i look at min, i see that x, y, and z do not contain any value, not even NULL...  it is the same for max, a1d is [3] in the case of p0, but it is nothing under min or max.  i have not found a way to utilize breakpoints to my benefit, and am trying to figure out how to watch the value of anything change in real time...

any debugging assistance would be awesome at this point.  i feel like we are closing in on the answer, but i feel as if i am stumbling blind through this code.

Looks like min and max are bad pointers, either initialized to junk data or otherwise invalid data.  Don't worry about breakpoints then, the crash is probably the only breakpoint you'll need.  Basically it looks like fvi_ray_boundingbox is being passed bad data somehow.  You may have to step up the stack trace (to mc_ray_boundingbox, mc_check_sldc, etc).  If you can go up 4 or 5 levels, expand all the variables in the right pane, and take a few more screenshots, it could help.  I'm going to look at the function calls to see if there's a reason min and max would be junk data.  Will need to check up to where they're created probably (or maybe they're not :P )

Edit:  Ok my money is on mc_check_sldc.  After having a look at that function, I wouldn't be surprised if PPC really has been broken since SLDC was first introduced, over 2 years ago.
