So I can't find any reference toward building FRED in linux from the source download, and following the instructions from the ReadMe didn't make an executable for it.  Did I miss something obvious, or is there no FRED for linux?

Unfortunately there's no FRED for Linux.  There is a plan to release a cross-platform version of FRED (wxFRED) but that's nowhere near being finished yet.  Your options are to try running the FRED windows binary using wine, or boot to Windows...

OK, thanks!  I just wanted to be certain.

You could also volunteer (or recruit someone to volunteer) for the wxFRED project. :)

I'd be willing to help, though I doubt I'd be able to contribute much, if anything. I only started using Linux last month, and I don't do a lot of programming.
