I'll get the full game up in a bit. Trying to work things about behind satellite is difficult.
This has to do with a missing Visual C++ Redistributable package but I can't remember which one. In the original install guide at starshattermods I had a link that The E provided that fixed this issue. As soon as we figure it out I'll update the OP.
For right now here's the MS Answers Page (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/the-program-cant-start-becuase-msvcr100dll-is/5c9d301a-2191-4edb-916e-5e4958558090).
I've run into a bit of trouble getting Starshatter to start up. For the record, I followed the instructions in the opening post to the letter. When I first attempted to launch the game it told me I was missing a DLL file. Specifically, msvcr100. I downloaded the missing DLL from dll-files.com and chucked it in the game directory. This time when I attempted to start the game a new error message appeared.
I was on Hughesnet jr2, but I'm back home now.

I download and installed Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Packager for (x64), Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package for (x64), and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64). I also downloaded and installed the security updates that were available for them.
Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. I'm still receiving the same error message as before.
I have a different problem.
The new exe supplied above does not launch correctly. Without so much as a black screen, "Starshatter has encountered a problem and needs to close. The game runs fine with the original exe and dll. I found the attached log, but I don't know what the error indicates. It might have something to do with having a 32 bit system, but eh.
rscaper, out of curiosity, are also the modfiles like the solcom and guardian mods preserved or still accessible?

Please forget that a site like dll-files.com even exists :P Those things do generally more harm than good.
As for the error posted, that one generally hints at a corrupted registry. I generally do not like to advise it, but using one of the registry cleaning programs available may be able to help here.

Now that you have the C++ package installed try deleting the mvscr1000.dll or whatever it is from your starshatter directory. From what I have read the current error you are getting come from mismatching 32 and 64 bit programs. This is just a shot in the dark, but give it a try and see what happens. If you go back to getting the original error then some have solved this by copying the .dll into their system32 directory. By advised though that microsoft support does not think this is a good idea, but apparently it does work for some folks. I would at least try deleting the file from your starshatter directory and see what that does.
Could you point me towards that ftp site?rscaper, out of curiosity, are also the modfiles like the solcom and guardian mods preserved or still accessible?
Mike,
All of the mods that were uploaded at Starshattermods.com were preserved on wdboyds ftp site. I have been able to transfer them all to my hard drive and am now in the process of uploading them to
www.spacesimcentral.com
It will take some, but all of the mods will eventually be posted including the two you mentioned and one other one that might interest you called Renegad Legion. LOL I actually am planning on revisiting that mod now that I have gotten better at 3d modelling to upgrade some of the ship meshes to make them look better. By the way, speaking of RL and our old mod team is akalabeth still around? Haven't heard from him in ages.
I would love to point you there, but it's a privately owned and password protected ftp site. I am not sure that the owner would be happy with me if I were to give out his sign in information. If there is something specific that you want, let me know and I can make sure to get it uploaded to spacesimcentral now. I anticipate all of the mods being uploaded to ssc by the end of this week anyway. At that time all the mods will be available to anyone who wants them. That's fine, I was just going to mirror everything on fsmods. I'll just wait until you get them up and upload them myself, or I can give you a temporary ftp account for fsmods.

great! good to know that the uniques like the honor harrington, andromeda, and star frontire: knight hawks are preserved! kudos to all!
Bradd, out of curiosity, did you also manage to contact achilles?
You could try doing a google search for his e-mail address to see if you can find a place that he still frequents, IIRC I did that once to track someone down. You could also try using the IM part of the deal; maybe he still uses that (I doubt it but hey!) e.g., [email protected] < just try using Yahoo IM and see if they are ever on, even if they don't ever check that e-mail any more.
I've blocked downloading through request.php. You'll have to use the download.php links I posted now. If this is an issue, please let me know.
Could somebody link another mirror (that isn't FSMods)? My AV (required for school internet access. It's a pain) doesn't let me use it.

What does it complain about? I do not believe fsmods has had any issues for a couple of years now.

Microsoft says that DWM is always on in Windows 8 but that's not true. WinPE4 (tiny Windows 8) has no DWM. Actually, DWM is on because of Metro so if you disable DWM the Start Screen will turn black and you can't see anything. Winlogon.exe spawns a new DWM.exe process so if you kill DWM.exe it restarts.
Solution?
Use PSSuspend.exe or Process Explorer from sysinterals.com
Follow the command line instructions for PSSuspend
If you're using GUI Process Explorer than right click on the winlogon.exe process and click Suspend. Then, kill DWM.exe.
This is to disable desktop composition in windows 8 and 8.1.
This does not apply to:
Fullscreen users (not windowed borderless)
Other operating systems (Desktop composition is a lot easier to disable in other operating systems)
Use Process Explorer and run it as Administrator
Do the following steps in order:
KILL explorer.exe
SUSPEND winlogon.exe
[This is so you can do the next step without it re-opening automatically]
KILL dwm.exe
[This is what you don't want to be running, it's the desktop windows manager and has desktop composition. this gets in the way]
RUN explorer.exe
[File > Run... in Process Explorer, allows opengl to be used and basic OS navigations excluding metro start menu]
RESUME winlogon.exe when you want dwm.exe back (or restart)
[You may have to kill explorer again and suspend winlogon.exe again to get it to be resumeable]
The benefit to doing this is a dramatic reduction in cursor latency.
The downfall is the start menu goes to black and can't be used at all.
This has actually become very safe and easier to do. Now I really do recommend it to anyone on Windows 8 / 8.1
A humble animator reaches out to XDA..
Switching to Windows 8 destroys the ability to use one of the most streamlined and dynamic animation programs ever made.
Macromedia's Flash MX ( Version 6 ) Why this version? It's the version before Adobe bought it, and messed with the brush engine. Pressure
sensitive brush lines are amazing, sharp, and precise compared to later Adobe versions. Many cartoonists prefer drawing in it.
Flash's vector engine clashes with Windows "glass" and DWM composition though. The program works fine, but in Windows 7, one must
disable desktop composition in compatibility settings, or navigating through to edit a symbol is incredibly slowed down. ( by about 500%! )
So, in switching to Windows 8, disabling DWM is not possible any longer, and thus - working in Flash 6 is broken forever.
Has anyone managed to turn off DWM in Win 8 through any kind of hack, or using old DWM code?
Help! Flash isn't the only app affected by this!
Cry.. sob.. etc..

winlogon.exe
kill dwm.exe
use command line to delete/move dwm.exe
unsuspend winlogon.exe
!!!
profit???
BTW, you will have to replace dwm.exe before rebooting or logging off, or you will have bricked your installation
Don't run explorer, or else bad things will happen. Ex7 for windows 8 will work fine.
Wow! This does in fact work.. without rebooting.
That last step of deleting / moving dwm.exe not necessary.
I used process explorer to:
open cmd.exe
kill explorer.exe
SUSPEND winlogon.exe
kill dwm.exe
in cmd: run flash.exe
when done: unsuspend winlogon.exe - everything returns to normal.
Now if I can only automate this. Hmm.. maybe I can try and whip something up in autoit or autohotkey so that this can all be done on the fly for any
particular app..
Thanks!
Bad things might happen if you leave winlogon suspended for too long, that's why the move dwm step exists
You tell me, pilot. I get 404 missing page error on the main package. If you could reupload it somewhere for me, that would be cool.Still works perfectly for me.
(or Google DNS can't find freespacemods.net anymore?)
+1 to the request of New Starshatter.exe
I've downloaded Starshatter _TGS_v5.05_Full.7z and SS_Reborn.7z without any issues however, so I'm suspecting there's some connection issue on your end... But if you can't get them by tomorrow I will upload to Google Drive and share the link here.
Here's what you need to start playing Starshatter. First, if you haven't already, create a folder C:\Games. Now download the following files.Download gets interrupted. Repeatedly. Recommended Free Download Manager says this:
Full Game (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.840) 521.04 MB
Remote server closed connection
Until it goes back up...
you can use the gamesupdates.org mirror (http://gameupdates.org/details.php?id=5035).
Error 84 error MSB3073: The command "copy /y "C:\StarShatter_OpenSource_FromZip2\Starshatter\Release\Datafile.exe" "\Datafile.exe"So, I take it you haven't defined a STARSHATTERPATH environment variable.
Links should be working now
That's a really neat website - last time I saw SS mods it was on the old website.
By the way Achilles, did you get the files I linked to you? I realize you said you had already found your old ones, but it would be nice to know you were at least able to get hold of what I linked to you.
...If you are simply trying to make SS playable again, the carcorr mod and RSCaper's starfield fix are quite essential, and I sent both of those your way.
Also it would be nice to make a listing of available mod files. Hopefully there have been no losses. For instance are the files for the star frontier mod still here?
