This is currently $6.99 (regular price $34.99) and I am thinking about picking it up.  Anyone here play it and have thoughts to share?  I'm not big on sandbox games, but some of the Steam reviews sound like the campaign mode could be fun.  I am more interested in combat than in exploring or trading.

More than a bit late, but I bought SG2 on GOG quite a while ago, so I'll throw my two cents in.

It's a fun game. Full 3D, nice selection of ships, boarding/towing/trading, and so forth. Factions are purely alignment-based so you're either friends with all the good guys or friends with all the bad guys. Quests get repetitive after a point, but by that point you're typically coming up with your own missions anyway. Fleet support is limited to hiring a few merc vessels with no customization. AI is braindead stupid: pirate gunships will pull your carrier out of PTE only to be instantly evaporated by your weapons, and never attempt to hack/board you, making resistance modules useless. Difficulty settings range from "asleep at the keyboard" to "I just got deleted in the scripted gunship duel at the beginning."

Basically, it's good for a play and can be really fun at times, but I get the impression that the developers had a lot of ideas that they never got around to implementing. Maybe the new DLC will improve it a bit.

One thing I'll make note of is that it includes an official port of the SG1 campaign, which is a nice touch.

A word of warning: the modding tools don't work correctly, so you're limited to what can be done with text file editing, though I hear the Workshop has some decent stuff.

Thanks!  Sounds like something I will like.  I did go ahead and pick it up, but my PC has been acting up so I have not installed it yet.  I'll give it a try after I reinstall Windows.

I bought it during the sale because it looked interesting and at that price why not. Having played it for about 5h (most of it today) I can say that "a spiritual successor to Freelancer" is not all that far off. You have your game world where you can adventure away, there are ships and weapons to buy, commodities to trade, randomly generated missions that involve either killing things or moving things from A to B, a plot that you can follow when you want or just fly around in space, planets that look too small etc etc etc. If you liked Freelancer (which I did, despite all its flaws), then you'll like Starpoint Gemini 2.

The voice acting is worse than in Freelancer, but then again, that game had some bigass names, like Jennifer Hale, George Takei and John Rhys-Davies. But I'm just nitpicking. All in all it seems like a fun game I'll be playing for a good while.
