Title: Some more models coming down the line...
Post by: Scooby_Doo on November 10, 2006, 04:47:05 am
The Stalker is nearly done (as seen in the tutorial)
The Scimitar is uv mapped
Liberty is uvmapped (bridge section was a pain)
Raksa'Darg is uvmapped
The Sartha I might do a uv map tutorial on.
Dragon i think is nearly ready to be mapped.

This was Lar's Kavor class with quite a bit of modifications.  It was suppose to be a fleet plasma cannon ship, and i mistakenly made it into a light/torpedo destroyer.

and his Lance transport turned into a strike destroyer
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/lancer1.jpg)

and my first attempt at something big It was the science station.  Moved some things around, added a few and used symetery at least 5 times.
Unnamed mega civilian station approx 2.5km tall.

Neat stuff.

Since you're crunching out models like madman ... may I ask what are you planning with them ? Are you gonna make TC of your own (since the ships are not exactly WC canon) ?
Or are you just reelasing them for the public to do as they like ?
Title: Re: Some more models coming down the line...

If you can find a use for them in any mod, I'll give out the individual vp file, you'll just need to modify the table to match your stuff.  Otherwise they'll be released/re-released once Saga's Prologue is released.

I will pledge allegiance when he actually makes FS universe ships. Since Scooby seems to be good with blocky designs (such as WC), perhaps the next step for him would be Terran ships from the Terran-Vasudan War era.

nice ships, though I don't particularly care for them, they look pretty good. IMHO, there aren't many Installations that have been created, so I might take the installation, and that's it....

Add to the list
Hhai'fram Tratic'kish
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/hhaiframtrratichish1.jpg)
this was a de-spherification of the Hha'ifra class
(http://tactics.solsector.net/joans/pictures/thrakship1.jpg)

It was a 800 meter dreadnaught, including Prince Thrak. ship.  It is now classified as a strike cruiser 1.2km long.  The fighter bay has been moved to the rear back (similar to the Aurora) and the forward section will consist of heavy artellery. Ideal for going up against bug cap ships  :D

Bumped it to 1.5km due to fighter bay size problems...

Sorry, I had to do some house cleaning with photobucket.

The stations on hold for now, just lacking ideas what to detail it with.  The lancer is nearly ready, I'm just having major problems with turret angles and vectors.

This was suppose to be the Ogan transport from Privateer 2, but it looked more like a bomber than a capship.

Have no name for it yet and no-wheres near done.

It's easier for me to see parts if they have different colors.  I'm still very unhappy about the details on the red hull section.

It has a little too much engines IMO. It would be OK for a capship, but it's too much for a bomber.
But it definitely looks like a bomber, yes.

This one http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/ship1-1.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/ship1-1.jpg) could be a corvette. WC confed only has the Venture so a second generation of corvette would be nice.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/Thaal_Drahk-1.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/Thaal_Drahk-1.jpg) I have seen this one allready and I still think it looks to mixed up between to many models.

The last one looks very good. Only the back has a little bit to much bussard intakes for my taste. I would cut out the lower ones behind the bridge section or even cut it out more.
Sure it needs some details in the back but I wouldn't just place the Yorktowns back on it....I don't know. The front has a quite unique feel what is good and then it gets disturbed by the old back part.

Hmmmm, I could redo it slightly for a corvette.  Size it up, add a few more windows, simply replacing the cockpit windows to basic capship windows.

The cruiser is in very early design, theres also a fighter bay in the rear, pretty much where the ranger's bay is.

Tallahasse II?

Duuuude!!!
I definately dig the Blackbird Raptor looker ya got there!
Quick question, do you have the POF converter working for Max 9?
I never saw a reference for it.
I have a barely functional one with my Max version 4 but its horrid to model with.
I've been using Rhino to fiddle around modeling with right now.
I think I am pretty much going to have to use Max for texturing though.

I use the old tried and true method, convert the model to 3ds, convert to cob and complete it with truespace, then import into pcs2

About the Ralari, I prefer the rounded one, but that's mostly because of me having played the original WC2. That frigate also looks nice...

But i want chiggy von richtoffen :(

Seconded ;) . That one really entered the scene with style  - and I especially liked it's "badge", would pretty much like to have that as a squadron insignia ;7 (for a Shivan squadron, maybe :mad2:  - guess what the other 4 arms are currently busy with... :beamz: ).

Also, it looks more like a missile than anything else.

Actually studio max assigns a random color to each new standard object (box, sphere, cyclindar...etc)

Do you map using the uvw modifier? I can't seem to generate templates. I'm gonna go back to the stock tutorials and see if i missed something.
Title: Re: Some more models coming down the line...

I use the UWV Map modifier (it produces square/cylindar/sphere..etc style mapping) only when it offers speed over Unwrap UWV.  For examples, a cylinder (a gun or the Arbalast's hull) would probably benifit from uwv map cylindar style best, another example is like the bearcat, where the majority of the upper/lower surface is flat.  Of course once I've set it up using Map, I still need to use the Unwrap UWV (which lets you directly manipulate the coords) to move/scale/rotate the results to fit texture space.

Another early WC5 sketch, this time the Panther.

it's in it's very early design, nicknamed so far, Katana
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/katana1.jpg)

And an even more primitive design, just started the other  night, wasn't aware of the CDF Interceptor at the time... This one's probably going to change quite a bit before it sees the light of day again.

Mh for missions down on a planet...yes I could see a use then but for a strict space fighter it wouldn't make much sense. I have allways asked myself why no one would paint his fighter just black with some small white dots as kind of a space camo ^_^
The shadows from Babylon5 are the only ships I know of that are actualy have this kind of "space camo". Still I know that its mostly not done because it would be hard for any SF show/game to have just black ships. It would frusttrate the player/viewer when he sees nothing at all.

Nice Scooby,
I'm still trying to find a decent texture mapping program.
I may try Maya 6 from a buddy.
TrueSpace & Blender seem really clunky for handling it.
Lithuwrap seems to lose the points and refuse to give me orientation in the proper direction on the parts as well.
I am curious, do you section your meshes, map the textures, then recombine the sections?

Kewl, did you make those in DOGA???

If so, did you get them in game or were there "problems"?

If they are original great job! They show much potential, just need to be refined a bit more IMHO...

I uvmap each section, run it through texporter to get a bitmap picture of the uvmapping. Import that picture into photoshop and merge it with other existing levels.  I never recombine as I lose the stack (except when dealing with Collada's exporter).

This one: http://www.cuneytozdas.com/software/3dsmax/

Oh ya and forgot... use instances (clones/ references) whenever possible.  That way you only need to uvmap one and the rest will inherit it.

Thanks, yes it is an original fiction of what I'm trying to make as a 3rd part mission pack for BtRL.
Mainly the Stealth variants of the Viper that evolved during peace time between Cylon wars for inter colony missions trying to keep tabs on eachother without generating any political strains, etc... all leading up to the final variant of the StealthStar as shown in the Hero episode.

Actually I'm using Rhino 4. I took advantage of the Student pricing ($169) since I'm using it for my game mod hobby :p I'm a major fan of the modeling environment in Rhino, super fast and slick.
I can do a ton of formats just not cob, dae, or pof. But it does do the new fbx format as well as obj, vrml, 3ds, stl, lwo, raw, pov, iges, stp, xtp, ai, wmf, x, csv, txt, dxf, its a long list....
The texturing/UV mapping is killing me so far though. I can render everything with standard textures and colors in Rhino but it doesnt translate as a complete UV map. A shame because it is so awesome for modeling with.
TrueSpace 7.6 is driving me insane!! I just can't find anything in the interface very well. I start to try a cylindrical UV map and it disappears from selection when I try to rotate it to the right axis. Can't figure out how to get it selectable again let alone feel like I have any really reasonable control of objects in the environment.

GMax well it doesn't export any formats now does it sadly?
Looked like it could unwrap UV just fine, but how do I apply it and export it?
Gmax forums seem to be suffering some sort of Angst from its moderation.

Texture mapping; I'm looking at:
PoseRay(free to obj file and nice interface)
UV Mapper Pro ($60 to obj as well but easy to map and move points with.)

I cant seem to move items around very well with Lithunwrap?
Trying to export every component to individual files, try and map those in Lithunwrap, then put back into one file.

The POF heirarchy thing I can't seem to pin down with any simple programs yet either.
Deep Exploration tries but seems to lose faces in every format export. Plus way too expensive for what I needed it for.
Going to try 3D Explorer again but the last trial ran out. If it were $50 for the thing I would buy it, but $500? yeah right....

I try adding lights in Rhino and the rendering intensity gets screwy, not to mention don't translate as lights to many formats.
Anyone know a download link for an early version opf TS? I used to have the file, can't find it.

Well back to banging my head on the wall trying to get a conversion format to work :p
I do have some hope if my buddy gets me the old Maya 6 out of our company archives he tried out but never used again.

I do have Max 4 licensed on an old AMD HP Slimline box, but its V4, and really clucky to work with when it isn't crashing.

I haven't time to test it but there seams to be a free Version of XSI6 called "XSI Mod Tool"
From what I read its XSI6 minus the renderer and there are some limits on the polycount...something about 60.000...and the textures can't get bigger then 512x512 I think. Still for starters or people who want to make their first steps it might be a good choice.
XSI is, beside Maya, one of the most common tools in the CGI scene of big companys...as far as I know.

Mh Tallahassee on steroids ^_^
Interesting concept but I find that the different sizes don't match that well.
The part that combines the front and back section looks a little week compared to the other parts and the bridge seams a bit small for that size of ship. Maybe change it from cruiser to battlecruiser and resize the bridge accordingly. Currently it looks...strange to me. Like the hull is that of a bigger ship and the bridge suggest a smaller design.

That's pretty cool.  Any way you'd try to copy aspects of the F-4's balancing of tailplane anhedral vs. wingtip dihedral?  You could reduce the span on the flat portions of the tailplanes, shorten the up-turned portions and lengthen the down-turned portions, then do the reverse for the main wingtips.

One thing that is definitly better then in the original is that you got rid of this rediculus thing spine that connected the front, middle turret and engine part. For everything else. I kinda like it.
As for a name....what about "Plunceid" as a variation of the original name. ^_^

Plunceid?!?  I feel sorry for people with that lastname. How about this: Admiral Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax

Man, and I thought the idea of naming three admirals for a joke campaign Admiral Jobsworth, Admiral Neidermeyer, and Admiral Hartmann was unflattering...

This looks to me to be a Destroyer support ship such as a Heavy Cruiser. 4 to 6 of these supporting a GTD or GVD in a Battlegroup would look nicely.

The Hecate was my inspiration for those wings. I've already got another ship with them (in the previous page) and a few "ideas"

Also I'm totally redoing the Jrathek.  The cockpit bubble is wayyyy to big and fugly (hey it's an earlier model from me, thats my excuse  :P )

Still a good start IMO.

The ship in the WC movie is a small trader ship. Kinda like the Prowler. A small trade ship for Privateers. If I remember it correctly from the book it had one turret top and buttom and we see some kind of boardingtube at the side that can be extended.
Still it should be taken with a bit of salt as this version was most likely a covered ops version for Taggard as I don't think that a normal freighter/trader ship would have a boarding tube strong enough to cut through a military class ship as we have seen it in the movie.

Max 9, I use the last good Collada exporter.  I've got the Nov build but the Dll's are messed up, I've got latter alpha build dll's that aren't used in the earlier build in the folder.  It's kinda a mess.

I got a question about your models.
I like all of them ,but there's one thing that is wrong with Kilrathi fighters.
There is no Kilrathi there.
My question is: Can you model a Kilrathi pilot with approbate cockpit?
Because when i took a look inside canopy of one of your Kilrathi fighters i saw Terran pilot with cockpit only slightly differing from Terran fighters.
Of course in WC4 or WCP era we have alliance with Kilrathi and maybe in some of their fighters can be piloted by terrans ,but not all of them.
I would like to see furball in your next Jartekh and K'riska.
I think you can model both Terran and Kilrathi cockpit and put both versions to download.
Some time ago i had an campaign idea where you fly as Terran between Kilrathi (think main FS2 campaign where you go to officer exchange at some point) ,so you can fly in a fighter with Terran cockpit surrounded by normal Kilrathi fighters.

Also ,are you planning some Nephilim fighters and capships?
Only Nephilim-ish thing I found in you downloads was "Crab" with is too little for an invasion.
I think you can also extend Steltek ,their scout (or maybe fighter ,as i recall scout looked like an egg) looks decent and i think there can be use for it if we have Steltek carrier.
Title: Re: Some more models coming down the line...
Post by: Scooby_Doo on March 20, 2009, 02:03:57 pm
I've yet to find a Kilrathi model that could be used.  Hmmm I wonder if a Khajiit would work in it's place.  Also the current cockpit setup will only be visible to outsiders, I'm starting to implement, slowly, external cockpits, which use an entirely different setup.

I've got a bunch of sea-creature like ships, I just need to someday figure out a different texturing style.  70's psychedelic look just isn't right LOL
Title: Re: Some more models coming down the line...
Post by: Dragon on March 20, 2009, 02:37:39 pm
OK ,but i would like to see cockpit more Kilrathi-ish ,even if visible only from outside.
And you were right with Steltek scout ,egg shaped was drone.
I thought i have heard of Steltek fighter ,i wonder where?
I will try to reskin Terran pilot so he will not look like FS2 pilot ,i alway felt that he don't fits Wing Commander.
I may also try to make the same Terran pilot look like Kilrathi (incredibly slim and short ,but it will be better than Terran) ,and use photoshop to make cockpit look Kilrathi-ish (copypaste form images on CIC or at least give orange colouring).

Some Shadow/Vorlon/Walker stuff probably subconsciously.  Some come from real creatures, like the decorator crab.  Some from insanity I think LOL.
Most of these models are at least a couple years or more old.

Siege fighter, it was roughly based on the P-61 Black Widow,  sorry the name "Black Widow" is already in use, and if I rename that one to the original "Heretic" then we've got two fighters with the same name.   Ohhhhh how bout Heretic's sequel "Hexen"?

Exactly.
And it sounds really strange to use the plural form for a single ship.

And "Hexe" (singular form) would be just as funny, because it is something you say to a little girl, or to a cat, if it does something bad but still funny.
So it just doesn't sound right for something that could wreak havoc on some other space ship or station.
It sounds rather... cute.

however, a wing of hexen would be cool

Angular = most typical WC3 and up designs of Kilrathi ships.
Curvy = WC1 and WC2 Kilrathi designs.
Title: Re: Some more models coming down the line...
Post by: Scooby_Doo on April 23, 2009, 11:49:23 pm
It's not so much the curvy is bad, just that those were early models of mine, and I when I look at them now I go "blah"

Also the kilrathi corvette gets a makeover.  Also because I'm recycling a lot of mesh pieces, I can cut the amount of retexturing that needs to be done significantly.

That one sir, I REALLY like.
Really menacing and very cool looking.
Just how much time a day do you spend doing 3d modelling?

The F-4 Phantom spacerized

I've also got the F-7 in the works and I'm looking for a B-25 mesh.

Download the free trueSpace 7.6, I think that includes a B-25 or similar twin engine WW2 light bomber.

Looks good but doesn't much resemble the P-61. The plane was a twin tail design with a quad 50 caliber machine gun turret on top and four belly mounted 20mm cannons. Cockpit seating was in tandem in a stepped cockpit and a third crewman in the rear of the center pod. Pilot, gunner, RADAR/radio/gunner - front to rear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-61_Black_Widow

That was one weird aircraft, especially with its lack of ailerons. It used a spoiler on each wing, which was raised to reduce lift, making the plane fall sideways into a turn instead of the normal operation of ailerons pushing one wing up and the other down.

Here's loads more inspiration for ships. http://shipschematics.net/yamato/

This one's quite the mashup of details from many WW2 planes. http://shipschematics.net/yamato/images/gamilon/divebomber_striker.jpg

Take the main wing, throw it on the backhalf, take the two engine nacelles and bring them closer to the hull. Get rid of the tail, move the cannons underbelly and to the side. Throw in some extra details  :p

Top half & engines is from a battleship that I could never get the right idea for and aborted it.  The bottom half & bridge is from the Concordia class carrier.

The bridge looks a bit strange. Else it looks a bit like a mix of one of the old designs I send you and the Black Lance carrier.

I agree, the bridge just looks too tall.  Otherwise, I like the overall design of the carrier.  It looks rugged.
What size is it?

Not sure about the size, I'm guessing about the same capability as the Concordia class (WC4). Also the hanger will probably be more like that of the Lexington class (split level)

Bigger than my Nimitz carrier (which will eventually get resized) but smaller than Enterprise class (also will get resized)

Don't worry they will get done.  Once I've gotten all of Saga's models complete, I'll hopefully have more time on my hands.
BTW the Excalibur was taken from the Saga model, the avenger was what I worked on, (perhaps I'll texture it another time).  And the draogn was scratch built.

Right now I'm texturing the Liberator.

How about a big honking plasma cannon, like what was on the Plunkett?

Wait. Isn't the upwards the lance transport instead of the lance carrier?

EDIT: here's the hidden bogey:

It looks different..
Title: Re: Some more models coming down the line...
Post by: starlord on August 08, 2009, 04:35:58 pm
That's the concept of the lance carrier (different from the lance transport seen in WC4). Perhaps it was meant to replace the vesuvius as the antagonist ship...

Nevertheless, the model remained in WC4, but was never used. Might be good to extract and play with in campaigns...

There's an obvious typo there, i'm nowhere nerdy enough to point it out.

So there were unused model in the WC4 .tre files? Awesome.. What format?
