Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF JULY 19TH
Okay, I confess myself thoroughly defeated by this process.  The problem is the part where I have to create a multiplayer pilot.  When I do this, Freespace insists I'm out of memory even though there's 351GB free on my primary hard drive alone.  (I can create new single player pilots just fine.)  I've put the issue up in Mantis.

Check and see if you have a data\players\multi\inferno directory under you fs2 directory.  If not create it and try again.  Occasionally the directories fail to get created.

In normal circumstances yes, I'm fully aware of that.  But in this context, that would just be nonsensical.

Would like to make sure that instructions referring to the 5.5f launcher get updated to point to the new 5.5g one.  It fixes some issues with the new OpenAL settings to work properly with nightly builds and I don't want the broken 5.5f one to become any more commonplace than it already is.  I've already updated the 3.6.12 release thread, Nightly FAQ, and any Wiki pages I can find, plus the SCP website.   Thanks.

Hey guys, need a bit of help here. I'm trying to play with a friend of mine and the only part I'm having trouble with is port forwarding because I have a different router. That, and I've never fully understood port forwarding.  I have a Linksys router so my screen looks completely different from the screenshots. Would appreciate it if anyone out there can help out.

Linksys either has a tab called Port Forwarding, or perhaps just Applications and Gaming, that's what my WRT54GS calls it.

Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF Aug 19
Right, I've been messing around with it there. Two questions, do you know if the port range has to be the same ports? Meaning Start and End both at 7808 and 7117 in two separate rows? Or am I supposed to use only one row start at 7808 and end at 7117? I'm trying the former right now.

Second question, how do I know what IP address to use? Thanks in advance to anyone that answers.  :doubt:

Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF Aug 19TH
Your current setup is correct.  Otherwise, you'd have to do the range 7117 to 7808 and that would forward _all_ ports in between as well, you don't want that.

You want to use the IP your computer is currently set to.  It should be something like 192.168.1.xxx probably, could be 192.168.0.x, or 10.10.x.x, etc.  If it's assigned by your router dynamically, you may have to update that page when it changes.  Or, you might be able to set your router to reserve a certain IP for your computer, but that's a bit complicated to set up.  Easier would be to pick a number outside of the range your router assigns, and manually set that on your computer, but then you have to unset it if it's a laptop that you move around a lot.  Too much for me to type up instructions for, use google or read the router manual or such for more help.

Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF Aug 19
Thanks for the help, though I think I've found the right IP and gotten that part set up correctly, for some reason I still can't play with my friend. I followed the Multiplayer Getting Started guide as did my friend but for some reason my game never shows up in his server list even though it shows up on the FS2NET site. Same problem when he tries to host. I also can't join any other servers when they're up, it just takes me to the Create Server screen when I try. Weird.

We tried a Direct IP connection first but that didn't work either. Same problem, the server just doesn't show up and we did everything in the Direct IP Specific Settings of the guide. I'm not even sure what to ask anymore.  :doubt:

Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF Aug 19TH
I'm sure someone has asked this somewhere in this forum, but I can't find it, so, here goes nothing.

I played FreeSpace YEARS ago on-line, but haven't any multi-player experience - so no instincts re set-up.

Initially, I would like to set up to play across the three computers on our LAN, so my boys & I can get up to speed, enjoy playing each other as well as, eventually all go multiplayer on-line with you.

What (if any) different setup procedures are required to 'host' across our LAN as opposed to going on-line?

Thanks, and sorry for being an ALM (Annoying Little Man).

Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF Aug 19TH
Well there are 2 ways to play on a lan.  Direct IP games where one computer is the host and the others connect.  The second is just going through FS2netD just like you would for online multiplayer.  Direct IP won't save stats or anything but is easier to setup on a LAN.  You just turn off PXO and enter the local IP of the host machine on the clients.  Now since you are planning on going online at some point it might be better to just do that now.  The issue you are going to run into is with port forwarding (assuming each machine doesn't have a global IP address.  if it does no problems).  You will need to follow the instructions to setup the host machine.  Now the clients are going to be a bit tricky.  If your lucky you can just force port on them to 7809 and 7810 in the launcher (setup those ports as well when you do the host).  If your not lucky I really am unsure.

Re: 3.6.12 Multiplayer Setup, Schedule, and other Info V0.9 CURRENT AS OF Aug 19TH
why would you need two routers? if there are two players wanting to play, and one hosts, the one that hosts needs to open up the ports on the router.

if you have a fancy schmancy split network with two incoming internet links, it means you also have two globally accessible ip addresses. the not-too-smart way would be just to open up the ports on both routers. the smart way would be to make sure that all FSO traffic goes over one router in both way (incoming and outgoing) and not the other router.

if you have one router after the other, please disconnect one of them completely, hook up the rest of your network to the one you want to keep and beat yourself to death with the other one for being an idiot.

Actually, it seems you can shotgun broadband connections like you used to with modems and ISDN back in the day.  If you can get two DSL lines from one provider for instance, you might be able to get them to use one IP over both lines.  You'd have to talk with your ISP probably to get that set up though.
