I already had an idea for a local environment map, it would basicly be for all objects within a set radius of the camera, you make a local cube map that has only large ships in it (and only if those ships are in a certain range of the object) and maybe some close weapon fire.

this probably wouldn't work for capships very well though, and any terrain environment map is going to have to be drawn for each ship
