OKAY FINE FOR THOSE IN NEED OF A LOT MORE THAN A CLUE SINCE THIS STUFF IS IMPORTANT

LOOK AT THE CLUE (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80604.msg1601110#msg1601110)

THEN LOOK AT THE A LATER POST IN THE THREAD CONTAINING THE CLUE (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80258.msg1594308#msg1594308) AND NOTE WHEN IT WAS POSTED

(READING THE FOUR POSTS ABOVE THAT POST WOULDN'T HURT)

NOW GO READ THE OP (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80604.msg1600992#msg1600992) AGAIN AND NOTE HOW MUCH TIME HAS PASSED SINCE THE LAST POST I POINTED YOU TO

ALSO NOTE THE OP'S STYLE WHICH SET THE STYLE FOR THE REST OF THE THREAD

THIS THREAD IS IN THE TOOLS BOARD FOR A GOOD REASON

IF THINGS STILL DON'T CLICK AFTER THAT WELL SORRY

LASTLY FINISH IT GOOBER

Well, at this point, the thread has largely served its purpose of getting a specific message across to a specific individual.

It's disappointing that practically no one else considers the issue important but what can you do.

This thread was intended as an act of love to show Goober that we're all rooting for him. If he goes to the African jungles, he might catch a tropical disease or get eaten by a Lion.  :shaking:

Seriously? :doubt: We have what seems to be a working installer, finally. The biggest hurdle to getting new people into the community will be gone, the number of future players for all of our mods and campaigns and upgrades will almost certainly shoot up, and people are complaining about the language it's written in?

Personally, I couldn't care less if it's in Java, C, BASIC or written in bloody sexps as long as it works. Nicely done Goober! :D

Java is too big of a security risk to be overjoyed about its use.

Java is a security risk, yes.

It is also one of the very few platforms where one can write code that works the same way across all the platforms we support.
By the way, griping about the choice of language now is a bit late, given that the installer, even in its previous incarnation, has always been Java.

Title: Re: GOOBER
Post by: Fury on March 19, 2013, 06:43:33 am
It was not my intention to understate Goober's contribution in creating new installer. As far as I know it was never mentioned before what programming language would be used to build the installer. It is irrelevant what was used for the old installer. Emphasis being on old.

It is bad design if the installer requires Java Runtime Environment to function. Requiring people to install JRE to run the installer does nothing but put people at unnecessary risk towards Java exploits. Security issues that Java has had is nothing to shrug about. I'm sorry if cross-platform convenience is more important than not increasing potential attack surface on people's computers.

If the installer works without JRE or JDK, then I guess that's all right.
Title: Re: GOOBER
Post by: Goober5000 on March 19, 2013, 09:55:06 am
Thanks for the encouragement, everyone.  And thanks for the medal, An4ximandros. :D

I should note that the skepticism of mjn.mixael and NGTM-1R is reasonable; there are still several pieces needed to be put together before you can start up the installer and have it work start to finish.  But the download panel that I just completed is a major step (and one of the final major steps) in that direction.

As for Java...

It is also one of the very few platforms where one can write code that works the same way across all the platforms we support.
By the way, griping about the choice of language now is a bit late, given that the installer, even in its previous incarnation, has always been Java.

This, exactly this.  Additionally, there is a critical point about the recent Java security vulnerabilities that isn't being emphasized: they apply to Java applets rather than Java applications.  Java applets are what run in your browser, and they tend not to be popular these days because everyone prefers alternatives such as Flash -- which is one of the reasons Oracle was caught off-guard.  Java applications are what run on your desktop.  The FSO Installer is a Java application.  If you disable all your Java browser plugins, you'll be fully protected from all the security exploits, and you'll still be able to run the Installer.

I only wish to gripe at the usage of FreeSpace Open, FreeSpace Installer and FreeSpace 2 Open.

Shouldnt that be more standardised to just FreeSpace Open or FreeSpace 2 Open.

But wow, definately a lot further along than we had originally thought. Go Go Go, Go GOOBER, Go Go Go, Go GOOBER!

Are following features planned?
- Detecting if FS2 is installed to Program Files and move it to Games or another folder or user's choice?
- Detect GoG.com version and fix mve.
- Install OpenAL. I'm not sure which one is better choice, Creative's or Soft. But either way OpenAL32.dll can be dropped into FS2 dir, instead of system wide install.
- Install launcher. I still find it annoying that wxLauncher can't just be dropped into FS2 dir and have it work, like old launcher.
- Keeping all of above and mods up-to-date?

#1: Wasn't planned
#2: I looked at this, but this would involve copying all the MVE files since GOG looks in one place and FSO looks in another.  It might be better to have FSO look in both places.
#3: I think OpenAL is included as part of the FSO selection.
#4: The launcher is included as well.
#5: Assuming that projects provide updates, the Installer will keep updating them.

We really need an automatic fix movie location thing. I've seen so many people go through the game without realizing there are cutscenes.

Having the engine recognise the other location seems like a more sensible situation than moving them though.

The red light and green light, is that hash verification of the downloads?  Or simply a file complete / download failed display?

Oh, and, where are my manners?  Props, Goober!  :)

what about the FSPort and Silent Threat Reborn - i think those should get a more prominent place than other mods, just as much as the mvps get

It's for success/failure.  A failed hash check is considered as a failed download.  (The download will be re-attempted in that case.)

I would like to just point out how damned lucky FS community is when it comes to mods. Certain people among us believe that installing FSO mods is so difficult.

Hah.

Just now I tried to get back into playing Skyrim and was looking for the "essential" mods to get the most fun out of the game. There's like a billion mods out there doing little thing, a lot of things and anything in between. More than anything I got confused as to what I should get and what I should avoid. Not to mention that some mods apparently can't work together. So I googled up several articles listing such essential mods, only few mods were common between all of them and so I kept digging. I stumbled upon Skyrim STEP project which is essentially a list of good mods that work together and don't go against Skyrim lore. So I figured this is exactly what I was looking for. Problem? Each and every mod has to be installed manually. And before that, you need several utilities to manage these mods properly. Now, assuming that we get utilities set, it's time to start getting these mods. My patience ran out somewhere after 2 or 3 hours and the list just kept going.

I ****ing gave up and uninstalled Skyrim. **** that ****. A game like Skyrim needs a package manager with support for dependencies, meta-packages and mod repository. Otherwise there's no managing this mess unless you invest significant amount of time messing with this **** instead of playing the goddamn game.

With FSO you just install mediavps and whatever mod you wish to play and you're good to go.

Just because FSO is easier to install mods, doesn't mean there shouldn't be development on making the installation process easier for le dummies (myself included) :).

Rest assured I will get back to this, but installer time is in short supply for the near term.

To be honest, I'm currently working on fixing memset issues which came up while coding some features for mjn.mixael.  So, first priority is to get those problems squared away, next is to code another feature or two, and after that I need to test a mission for Scroll.  Once I get all of those done I think I'll be able to do some work on the Installer.  Then rinse and repeat.

That is, unless I decide to procrastinate one day and toss my schedule onto the floor.  Sometimes that happens. :)

Assuming that this does come out today, then the combination of a new installer and a new mediaVP should absolutely trigger a big advertising blitz. There're lots of FS fans out there who don't even know  how excited they're going to be about this in the near future. :D
Title: Re: GOOBER
Post by: Goober5000 on January 18, 2014, 11:56:24 pm
Well, we would probably need a new SCP release first.  Otherwise everyone is going to complain that 3.7.0 doesn't work with the 2014 mediaVPs, or that the pilot stats are getting wiped.
