Freespace 2 -- matching speed ("M" or "A" on HUD?)

I am playing the MediaVPs version of Freespace 2.

When matching speed, instead of the letter "M" appearing next to the Throttle Indicator (as in Freespace 1, and as shown in the Freespace 2 manual), it instead shows the letter "A".

Is this supposed to happen?  If so, why has it been changed?

A preliminary investigation has left me puzzling; this shouldn't be happening. Further updates as the situation develops.

FWIW, there's a line in mv_root-hdg.tbm, in mv_root that sets the $font: 2. If this line is removed, the A changes back to an M.
