After discussing with three other staff, we believe the usefulness of this thread has run its course and it is likely to simply run down a tangent that will create far more problems than it solves, so this will stay locked. If we find based on feedback in the Standards thread that we need this for side discussion again in limited areas then we'll re-visit the decision, but this just looks like a puddle of gasoline in need of a match now.
