Need Help With Multiplayer
(1/1)
danialsams:
Downloaded the 3_4b version of Babylon project, installed no problem.
Downloaded the Zanthra files, however, no installer nor instructions contained on where these files needed to go or how to use them.
Basically, I would like to be able to host server games for my guildies.
So in simple baby step terminology since I am not a modder or programmer or IT consultant, how do I achieve this end please?
Instructions
Directions
Direct links for downloads and how
All would be gratefully appreciated.
Consider me a 75 year old who looks at a computer and ask, "So how do you turn this thing on anyway?"

Is Zathras on Knossos? If so, I imagine that will make things pretty easy. (I haven't checked if it is or not)

Alright. Did some quick diving, check this:
http://babylon.hard-light.net/official_downloads.php
Which then leads to here if you click the Freespacemods.net link:
http://freespacemods.net/download_654.html
Which has instructions. If this is in Knossos, it would be a piece of one-click cake. If it's not, it should be??
Nuts. This uses the old Launcher too.... hmmmmmmm might be problematic. Reach out to someone who is more in the loop on the HLP Discord.
If not, try the IRC, either Multi or BP (Mibbit links, you can get IRC client links from the top-top-left of the page, HLP drop-down)

First thing I would do is review the PXO site, which is the overall easiest way to get multiplayer things setup.
Here's the getting started info:

Also
How can I optimize my multi experience??
* Make sure you set the update rate to LAN in the multi settings screen, unless your connection speed is extremely limited. FS caps the bandwidth it uses based on these settings, but they were designed for connections from 1999. LAN has the least restrictive limits.
* Be aware of the lock button on the far right of the load out screen that allows you to pick your own ship and load out. Before hitting lock you can can switch your wing position but it keeps you from altering your starting loadout. After hitting lock, you can no longer change positions, but you are able to change ships and loadout.
* Remember that missiles may have lost their lock on your machine, but can still be tracking you on the server. Be more cautious as a multi client about dodging missiles than normal.
* Again, make sure the host is the player with the highest internet upload speed. This will ensure that object update packets get to you the quickest and you have the smoothest experience, even in busy scenes.
And as an aside, we have FSO devs working on even better updates to multiplayer, so that's something to look forward to this year too! Also, the Discord server is a bit more responsive if you ever want to get live help or answers to questions :)
