Title: HLPX-COM: The Rebuild of Rebootening
Post by: NGTM-1R on June 18, 2013, 01:26:14 pm
IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN KIDS!

TIME FOR ALL OF YOU TO GET KILLED BY MY COMPLETE INCOMPETENCE! Difficulty Normal, Second Wave options Damage Roulette and Not Created Equal running.

Operation: Soaring Vengence

HLPX-COM Responding To Abduction Attempt

Location: Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Present: StarSlayer, KyadCK, Trashman, Commander DJ

(Since it's literally the first mission I can't change the names yet. Sorry. For reference, Amina will be StarSlayer, Owen will be Kyad, and Yegor will be Trashman, and Anton will be CommanderDJ. Assuming I don't get anyone killed.)

Pairing off and grabbing cover is pretty much the first thing you do in every mission.
"Contact! Two of them, direct front!" And nobody has a shot worth a damn. Time to keep moving.

"Firing! He's still up, still moving!" Well, DJ got a hit, but now you see Damage Roulette in action: he got it for a single HP.

And then he got shot for two HP. Ain't it grand?

Meanwhile, StarSlayer moves to flank the other alien.
Still only 1 HP of damage.

"Frag out!" Boosted aliens hurtin' mah rookies get grenaded, folks. That's a promise.

Kyad murders the other one on a 45% shot. Not bad.

"Jesus I blew his body even to bits. No sign of his gun."

Annnnnd then I completely blow it guessing where the other aliens are and they flank two of my people.

So they shoot at DJ, who's missed, and at Trashman, who's hit again and panics and takes cover.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/ngtm1r/2013-06-18_00024_zps2f4a614d.jpg)

Starslayer does two damage from a flanking position. Shame about the lack of a kill. Kyad does one damage to the other alien. DJ hops inside the truck to take cover but can't see anything from that position.

So hey you wanna see something really dumb?
This is really dumb. The guy who needs an extra HP desperately and is most close to death does something that gives an extra HP to the guy who might survive a hit and by the way will kill them both if the most-hurt guy is shot.

But they shot Kyad in the face, for 4 HP, so they'll at least be able to say they went down swinging.

"Firing!" StarSlayer misses.

"Firing! Good hit, good hit!" Kyad doesn't.
"What the hell, he keeled over and his gun blew up! We didn't even fire at him!"

"DJ, check it out, careful."

"They're both dead."

And so we win. DJ is now a support class, and Kyad is a heavy. Kyad is in the hospital for 12 days and Trashman for 9.

THE ROSTER IS AS FOLLOWS

StarSlayer
KyadCK
CommanderDJ
Trashman

Spoon (Future SHIV operator)
Droid803 (Base)
The E (Reserved For Future Shenanigans)

I'm open for a re-naming and turning the existing "TrashMan" into someone else if he () isn't na assault, and finding another recruit.

Also, you using any mods? Because there are a few out there that really make the game better.

Really?
There's a great mod out there (who's name escapes me ATM) that re-balances things for a much better experience.
Also ties the numebr of items slots with armor, so some armor enable you to carry more items. There's also a greater chance your soldeir will survie (but spend a LOT of time in hospital) rather than die (tweakes to health, damage and armor).

Once I found it, I never wanted to get back to vanilla.

XCOM doesn't have good support for mods as you must either run Steam in offline mode or block network access to Firaxis IP-addresses, otherwise the game will "fix" itself, making it unusable with the mod.

Not only that, but getting mods to actually work in the first place might become more involved process than you'd think. I had plenty of trouble getting Warspace Extension to work and I've since accidentally launched the game while Steam was in online mode and I have no idea whether the game actually works as it is supposed to now.

But I guess that's least of my problems because I lack any drive to actually finish the damn game even once. It's rather boring after decent start.

Yay for off-topic.

Trooper Briefing: Alien Weapons Basics
The science crew have turned in their preliminary reports. We've combined it with the reports of the sweep crew and the AARs.

Alien weapons consist of high-temperature plasma fired at relatively low velocities. Their damage is primarily accomplished by explosive vaporization of the target, rather than kinetic impact. The shots have no penetrating power in the conventional sense; any material thick enough to expend the whole energy of the shot will stop them, whether it's glass or armor plate. The explosive vaporization stage is still quite powerful, and has been observed to mangle heavy machinery and blast large holes in sheet metal. We expect it can do the same to cinderblock and concrete.

Current HLPX-COM combat armor provides some protection against known plasma weapons because of the ceramic inserts' extremely high vaporization temperature, but the ballistic cloth parts of the armor offer no meaningful defense. Stay in cover and be prepared to switch positions, as alien weaponry will likely be highly effective at demolishing cover.

The only currently known form of alien weaponry is an arm-mounted hands-free device used by t he Sectoids. It is quite compact, and from recordings in the field appears to have attachment points on the back and bottom for what we believe would be a standard pistol grip and trigger mechanism similar to human pistols. No Sectoid encountered to date has used their weapons in this fashion. This may indicate there are other types of alien.

Trooper Briefing: SECTOID
The Sectoids are old foes. Precursor organizations to HLPX-COM like the Russian Skywatch and the US SOF-X  have documented encounters with Sectoids going back to the 1970s. They are almost undoubtedly responsible for the existence of the “Grey” in popular lore. In a very real sense, these are the enemies our organization was created to fight.

The average Sectoid is approximately two-thirds the height of a human, with a bulbous head, large black eyes, no mouth, and a pot-belly that appears to glow. Their limbs are almost comically small. Their weak appearance is belied by their advanced weaponry. Skywatch files indicate the Sectoids seemed to be always aware of the positions of enemy troops, making approaching close for hand-to-hand combat against the apparently weak Sectoids impractical; SOF-X operators in 1985 and 1989 noted similar problems and added that their preference for hands-free operation of their weapons made it difficult to prevent a Sectoid from getting a round off in close combat. The aliens seemed to have no fear of endangering their own lives by the discharge of their weapons in close combat.

The mechanism by which they are constantly aware of HLPX-COM trooper positions is unknown.
Title: Who Names Something Sacred Pipe Anyways?

Sidenote: I am attempting to post this mission for the sixth time. The endless barrage of attacking script kiddies can officially kiss me where the sun don't shine. So can HLP's "YOU HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED THIS POST" message which is a liar.

Operation Sacred Pipe
Responding To Abduction Attempt
Present: StarSlayer, Commander DJ, esarai, Scourge of Age
s
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/ngtm1r/2013-06-19_00002_zpsd4baa6ed.jpg)

Once again: spread out, grab cover, just like the old days. Everybody still has assault rifles, too.

Scourge of Ages flushes a couple of aliens and has the misfortune to be the only thing they can currently see as the turn flips. He shoots one of them, but once again Damage Roulette and the RNG frowns upon HLPX-COM and it's for only a single HP of damage.

Naturally, they shoot at him for it after the one in back boosts the one in front. Also naturally, it misses. Unnaturally for this particular situation, I don't immediately have to move someone because the car they're using for cover is about to explode.

In the next turn, StarSlayer moves up and shoots at the alien, but the RNG continues to demand that I sacrifice virgin goats to it and we have another one-damage hit.

So, many dead goats later (how the hell am I supposed to tell if they're virgins!? I can't even ask, dammit) we have Scourge kill the thing with another shot. One to go! A lack of cover means I can't move up esarai and DJ to take that one down, so I decide to suffer through a turn of fire.

Instead, the Sectoid in the parking lot decides he should try to fall back and scarpers for it. Meanwhile, two more try to flank us from within the building, resulting in one of them getting shot by esarai.

Unfortunately esarai can't seal the deal on the one he shot when our turn rolls in, despite a 60% hit chance. DJ, however, can.

StarSlayer and Scourge move up a rank of cars looking for the alien that ran but he's apparently pretty quick, so nothing doing. I should note that I feel like I can get away with this, this early in the campaign, purely because there are only a couple pair aliens on the map. Otherwise I would be practically sending an engraved invitation for someone to plasmize Scourge from inside the building.

The other alien, realizing he's kind of screwed if he tries to move, opts to go overwatch. Yes, aliens can overwatch too. As both DJ and esarai have good shots on this one it's kind of moot, but at other times it can be very troublesome.

Esarai reminds the alien that it's not in a tenable position by shooting it, while DJ goes overwatch to prevent it from moving away safely.

It decides the only acceptable answer is to shoot esarai in the face. THIS WILL NOT STAND.
Esarai proves it won't stand by blowing the Sectoid's goddamn head off as the turn flips.

Meanwhile the other two keep pushing up and Scourge steals the kill after StarSlayer once again gets a 1HP hit with a rifle. Seriously man, appease the dice gods or something.

We be done here, yo. I eagerly await the correction on the proper use of "yo" promised in Dilmah's sig.

Esarai is now a Sniper, while StarSlayer is an assault and Scourge of Ages is a Support. I confess to confusion and mystification over where StarSlayer got a kill, and can only conclude there's a "I've done enough HP damage to kill several of them, make me a squaddie before I use my frag grenade on you" clause.

Esarai is out of action for four days due to his injuries.

Personal Log:  Esarai
Date:  <Incomprehensible>

Wheee I love the taste of plasma in the morning.  Tastes like... rage.  At least they're giving me a bigger gun to express myself with.  And again XCOM has mangled my registration papers.  Last time it happened I was Russian, now I'm supposed to be obsessed with pasta.  Well... I shouldn't say 'again,' they keep telling me 'last time' was a dream, but I dunno man.  Makes me feel like they're trying to conceal my real... identity.

Shhh... I need to think.

Heeeeee .50 cal.

Flying aliens! Zounds! Phantom Hoover, kill them all!

Actually, Phantom does pretty well. The aliens shoot faster than our Interceptors get off Avalanche AAMs, but only by a little bit. They fired four times and hit once. Phantom fired three times and hit twice. Scratch one, down in flames.

Of course Phantom didn't actually kill them all, but we'll let it go this time.

Operation Stone King
UFO Crash Site Assault
Present: StarSlayer, esarai, Spardason21, IronBeer

The area is a bit of a mess, or as they said back in MechWarrior 4: just follow the big skid marks in.

And then aliens.

StarSlayer takes a shot, but the shotgun's not really good at this kind of range.

...the missed alien then kills Esarai with one shot to the head, which is how I assume a two-damage weapon gets a six-hit critical.

So this is a little much for IronBeer, who flips the **** out and decides the most rational response is to attempt to shoot SpardaSon in the back! Fortunately he missed that.

So StarSlayer declares **** this, and it's Run and Gun time, right up to the alien, 100% hit chance, let's do this thing!
...one damage. APPEASE THE DICE GODS, MAN. Probably in the afterlife, at this point, because I'm pretty sure you're headed straight to plasma hell. Just for good measure, this guy pops up to flank StarSlayer.

I am a terrible prophet. StarSlayer got flanked by a Sectoid, took the hit, for two HP of six and fought through it, closed with the second alien, and blew their brains out. They were boosting the alien that shot StarSlayer, so they both died.

That still leaves the other one flanking StarSlayer and neither of the rookies has a good shot. So it's time to creatively use grenades. SpardaSon tosses his grenade against the hull of the alien ship, between Ironbeer and the other alien. This lets Ironbeer see it.

Ironbeer eschews the use of his rifle, with its possible 1-damage-plus-plasma-hell-for-StarSlayer, and uses his grenade to kill the alien. A plan, coming together, and best of all: lots of explosives.

Then the other two little grey bastards flank SpardaSon. This mission is a comedy of ****ing errors I tell you. Sparda doesn't have any available cover worth a damn so he pulls a fade to break contact, while Ironbeer grabs cover in the wreckage of the ship. StarSlayer is out of position and will need a turn to get back to the action.

Naturally, being the only thing visible, IronBeer gets shot at. The other alien goes overwatch.

IronBeer returns fire. No hitter, but it does seem to break the overwatch as the alien doesn't shoot at StarSlayer or SpardaSon as they both grab cover closer to the fight. (I'm pretty sure Overwatch does not work that way, but **** it, I'll take the bug.)

This time the nearer alien shoots at IronBeer, but only hurts the wreck. Still, need to move him now because his cover is gone.

Then StarSlayer, undeterred by the first effort at Run and Gun, goes for the whole “Moving at the speed of death!” again and charges right up to the nearest alien, on the other side of their cover. 100% hit chance, 70% critical chance, let's do this thing!
It works!

SpardaSon and IronBeer take shots at the last alien, but nothing doing.

I thought they shot StarSlayer. They didn't. Didn't look that way.

StarSlayer shot back. Also a miss, but blew the hell out of the alien's cover.

So if you'd take the honors here Sparda...

Done. As you can see, this wasn't our best outing.

Title: Re: HLPX-COM: The Rebuild of Rebootening
Post by: Scourge of Ages on June 21, 2013, 11:19:14 pm
Overwatch: If a soldier sees an enemy move, is granted one free shot at the enemy. The enemy does not get any benefit of cover.

The overwatcher does have to see the enemy though. I assume the alien didn't see Sparda or Stars. Usually the AI will only overwatch if he doesn't have a shot (any shot). Though that is just all from memory.

Also: Don't worry about Esarai, they saved his brain. They had to scoop it up into a bucket, but they saved it. They can rebuild him (probably).

Also, what does Overwatch do, for those of us who don't know?

It's the reaction fire mechanic for this game. Overwatch grants the ability to fire at someone moving across your field of view, at an accuracy penalty. The penalty isn't much to write home about; on Normal, at most combat ranges, being in the open without cover is something like a 65-70 percent hit chance with a 55-70 critical chance. So, even taking a 20% off the top of those doesn't make you very safe, especially considering in this game even I will take 45% shots most of the time. The main thing about Overwatch, instead of reaction fire, is that it will trigger. There's no check of a reflex stat, the first moving enemy somebody on Overwatch sees is going to get shot. It has all sorts of tactical uses, from keeping a fight private by preventing anyone else from safely moving to a place they can join it, to de facto pinning an enemy down by making them risk Overwatch fire if they want to move from their position, to simply buying you a free shot against anyone who wanders into range.

The aliens actually understand the first two of those and WILL use Overwatch that way, as well as act intelligently when confronted with your own use of Overwatch. This also means they'll attempt to suppress people on Overwatch to free up their movement options, something I'll address when we have someone with Suppression as an ability.
Title: Re: HLPX-COM: The Rebuild of Rebootening
Post by: General Battuta on June 21, 2013, 11:31:23 pm
Overwatch is most useful for exploiting the alien AI, which is deeply terrified of ever triggering an Overwatch shot and will go to paranoid and self-destructive lengths to stay in the same place as long as you have someone Overwatching it.

I was more than a little surprised myself and came pretty close to a save and quit afterwards, because it was just out of nowhere. Sectoids just don't hit that hard at this difficulty level, even on a crit.

Ah well, time to revise my opinions on their lethality. Again.

He wasn't. He was in half-cover and the shot came in about 45 degrees off the angle of the cover. (The game typically counts a wider angle than that as still cover.) The positioning had me worried about his next turn and having to pull him back to avoid his getting flanked and snipers not being able to shoot and move.

Post by: NGTM-1R on June 23, 2013, 01:37:42 pm
So we're going to China, to pick up somebody. The mission is kind of mysterious, it came down from the Council, and China insists they have no alien problems. What little Droid has been able to glean from back channels suggests somebody got in touch with us and has some kind of technology that isn't of human origin.

Operation Blinding Paramour
Shanghai, China
Present: StarSlayer, SpardaSon, CommanderDJ, IronBeer

"Just four of you. Things must be bad here."

"And watch your damn flanks. Seriously, rookies all of you."

"So here's the package, here's me, let's go."

So we move out and grab cover and...

OH COME ON, THAT'S JUST CHEAP. Even worse, there's one behind us too.

So everyone blasts away at the first new alien. And we get two misses and a single HP hit. The_E can be heard muttering about everyone's ineptitude. The second new alien isn't shot at, for some reason.

All right let's try and clean this up. Sparda takes a shot with his new rifle at the alien up front, and misses. IronBeer once again eschews the unreliable rifle for the use of a frag grenade, actually killing the alien.

DJ fires at the alien and gets a hit. For 1HP. God help me, this is worse than rolling with Jet Harpoons back in Terror From the Deep.

StarSlayer saves the day with a shotgun blast. "Boss, there any particular reason these things appear to explode into clouds of multi-colored chemicals?"

"Single hostile blocking the exit, just skittered for cover." IronBeer, out of grenades, engages with his rifle. Two damage. Marginally better.

DJ finishes it off.

A Thin Man drops in and gets blown away instantly by StarSlayer.

"Second wave inbound to your position, we've got...something different in the group." HEY GUYS, YOU REMEMBER ME!? (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/ngtm1r/chryssalid.gif)

"Giant bugs, why did it have to be giant bugs?" So StarSlayer takes a shot, hit, 4HP. Then Sparda takes a shot, hit, 3HP. It's down to one, it's still coming, I'm sure you guys can do this!

IronBeer and CommanderDJ miss cleanly and the thing runs right up to StarSlayer's face. I HATE YOU ALL.

StarSlayer, out of shotgun rounds, pulls a pistol and shoots the damn thing in the face. It falls over dead. I no longer hate StarSlayer.

And...Jesus Christ get out of The E's personal space! It's on overwatch so I tried to get out and The E took a couple damage, but survived, then DJ pulled back a little and killed the thing.

"Strike, we've got another wave inbound!"
So everyone and their dog shoots at the first guy who drops (as you can see). They killed it very, very dead.

"Popping smoke!" DJ, and the support class in general, has a basic ability where they toss a smoke grenade. I don't use it terribly often, mainly because I'm bad at it, but here I want to get a kill to Sparda because first-tier Snipers are really bad.

As I said, I'm bad with smoke. Sparda still gets shot at by the Overwatch-ing Sectoid, but they missed. They also didn't follow up but went Overwatch again on their own turn. This means that Sparda's free to pop off a return round that takes the Sectoid in the gut and kills it.

We're done here. Oh and by the way? Our newcomer, The E, qualified as a Lieutenant right out the gate, while I think the best of you right now is a Sergeant.

The E is listed as Future Shenanigans?
What does that mean and what can we apply for?

It means he's now the protagonist of the Slingshot DLC. And aside from cannon fodder we'll eventually need more pilots and you can always run the labs or the engineering section if you want.

I'd assume this is the start of the Slingshot content, yeah? Count me as doubly interested then, since I never picked it up myself.

It is!

So if you hadn't enabled that Damage Roulette option, would those rifles be doing more than giving the aliens paper cuts?

Technically they don't have to be giving the aliens papercuts at all. The rifle has a max damage of four and with Damage Roulette could be doing anywhere from 1 to 4, but the Dice Gods hate us.

So, I said housekeeping and abilities. Let's talk special abilities.

Every class has a basic ability they get at Squaddie when they become the class. Assaults have Run & Gun, which lets them make a running move and fire. Snipers have Snipe, which increases their critical hit chance by 30% and does extra damage on the crit. Heavies get to fire a rocket. Supports get a smoke grenade.

After that, they get to pick from two abilities at each promotion, except for Major where there's only one ability for everyone. I'm going to crib from the XCOM wikia here because frankly they've got it layed out really nice and simple in a way that would take me about a dozen screenshots to duplicate and many words and it wouldn't be as good. I apologize in advance to everyone who might be offended by this, please don't kill me, I think it's under a license that lets me do this if I attribute. (If it's not please warn me so I can throw myself on a convenient sword.)

This is the Assault tree.
Now, my picks are usually a little schizo for Assaults. I typically go Tactical Sense, Lightning Reflexes, Rapid Fire, Close Combat Specialist, and Killer Instinct. (You'll note that you have no choice on the Major ability.) My reasoning is that Assaults are designed to close the range through enemy fire before blowing their heads off with a shotgun blast, and this is a risky business. Some defense and some offense are both required to do the job well. I could end up with huge Crit chances based going more or purely offensive, but also my assaults would be a lot more likely to die. Dead troopers kill no aliens.

This is the Sniper tree.
For me, it's typically Squadsight, Damn Good Ground, Disabling Shot, Opportunist, and Double Tap. If you ever take Snap Shot you are either screwing around or a waste of oxygen. I'm sure somebody out there could construct a decent argument for Gunslinger or Executioner, but In The Zone requires you to be swung wide with your own flanks hanging out in the air to get shot or the use of a lot of explosives, and the ugly truth is a lot of the time there's something better for your guys to be carrying than a grenade.

This is the Support tree.
If there's room for flexibility anywhere, I think it's here. The essentials in my eyes are Field Medic, Revive, and Savior. Pretty much anything else could be justified. I'm bad at using smoke, so I generally opt for Combat Drugs and end up never using them, but if I wasn't I'm sure I'd like Dense Smoke. Sprinter is kind of lackluster but probably useful for a spread-out team, while Covering Fire's benefits are obvious to anyone who ever played the original X-COM games and had reaction fire triggering on enemy shots. You could even make a pretty decent argument for Sentinel over Savior, I think. Still, Supports are on the field to patch my people up usually, so I go with the skills that help them do that.

This is the Heavy Tree.
My choices are usually Bullet Swarm, Suppression, HEAT Ammo, Danger Zone, and I've recently shifted to Rocketeer rather than Mayhem. A second shot's value is obvious, I've heard people argue for Shredder but when I'm trying to capture people or the guns they're carrying I like having Suppression, Rapid Reaction isn't very helpful given that Heavies have a native low hit chance and reaction fire takes a penalty to accuracy. Grenadier encourages you to carry grenades, but your heavies are usually better served by carrying a S.C.O.P.E. to improve their hit chances for their powerful weapons. Rocketeer and Mayhem are kind of equal, one gives you more rockets, one gives you more powerful rockets and grenades plus some damage on Suppression.

If anybody has some alternate reasoning, however, I'm open to discussion.

For Snipers I've always preferred using In the Zone instead of Double Tap, though I can see the utility, just due to the sheer amount of kills you can rake in while Double Tap limits it to two. It's also especially useful for cleaning up those pesky Drones repairing that Cyberdisk that's trying to murder you without wasting a shot from your other troopers' rifles. Also, Archangel armor works wonderfully with In the Zone, as your sniper will usually either already be at a flanking angle or can easily move to one, not to mention doing so from across the map courtesy of Squadsight. The other 3 are essentially my exact builds, so can't argue much there.

As a side note, Nuffle is apparently very displeased with your virgin lambs, as we are getting royally screwed. Then again, XCOM does enjoy being a dick...

I've always preferred Double Tap simply because most of the times, I reserve heavy hitting snipers for the larger folks while everyone else picks off smaller units

Operation Blinding Dirge
Saint Petersburg, Russia
Present: The E, IronBeer, StarSlayer "Crit Miss", SpardaSon21, Kobrar44

I should note the mission is fought at night. This is despite the fact it is broad daylight and sometime in the late morning local time if the geoscape view is to be believed. XCOMMMM!

So we flush a couple aliens before we even finish our opening effort to grab cover. One of them runs straight into the overwatch of StarSlayer, with the shotgun, and Sparda, who's overwatching with a pistol because his sniper rifle doesn't let him move and shoot. No hits. Some other people have shots as the turn ends, but only bad shots. So I don't take them.

The aliens retaliate by firing at IronBeer. Badly.
StarSlayer once again does Run and Gun to get to a good spot for his weapon. The odd thing is I'm now kind of stuck with trying to decide who to shoot, as I have two shots with a 70% hit and 20% critical chance and a 70/70 chance because one of the aliens didn't bother taking cover. Ah well, let's go with the 70/70. The 70/70's boosting so if that Sectoid dies, both of them do.
Not bad, not bad at all.

And then everything goes quiet again for a few turns. This is our third terror mission. We ought to have at least six enemies here. Finally, on turn four, we get contact...on both flanks at once, four Sectoids, two to a flank. Then they retreat out of view after being spotted. Come ON, this is just silly.

Okay people, move out and find them. The next turn..we've not found as many of them as we should have. Just two, one from each group.

However, unfortunately for them, Sparda has a shot on the one most distant from him. Not the nearest, weirdly enough, but hey, I'll take it.
Good kill.

IronBeer advances a little further and spots the other one...it's not even in cover, from his perspective. Problem it's also very far away, and he has a shotgun. 30/70 hit. Ah well, let's take it.
...hey, he hit and crit. Marksmanship award for the hit there. 30% was pretty low probability.

StarSlayer runs up and fires at the boosting alien again, so...scratch two.
And we're done here. That was oddly simple.

For reference, the current roster:

Soldiers
Lieutenant "Crit Miss" StarSlayer, 5 missions, 10 kills. Assault.
Lieutenant The E, 1 mission, 0 kills. Heavy.
Corporal CommanderDJ, 3 missions, 5 kills. Support.
Corporal SpardaSon21, 3 missions, 4 kills. Sniper.
Corporal IronBeer, 3 missions, 2 kills. Assault.
Squaddie KyadCK, 1 mission, 3 kills. Heavy.
Squaddie Scourge of Ages, 1 mission, 2 kills. Support.
Rookie Kobrar44, 1 mission, 0 kills.
Rookie Trashman, 1 mission, 0 kills.

Pilots
Scotty, Raven-1
Phantom Hoover, Raven-2

Base Personnel
Droid803, Control
Spoon, SHIV Ops

KIA
Squaddie esarai, 2 missions, 1 kill. Support. Deceased 3/9/2015.

We've also just picked up a Sergeant Sniper as a mission reward, so I guess Gortef got lucky and gets to skip the usual grind.

Hmm. That's actually not a bad use for it. I don't normally use Archangel or even the Grapple armor, though, because of either paranoia about survivability or a struggle with a lack of materials. We'll have to see how it plays out this time. Still, deathfun elaborated on one of the other reasons I like Double Tap: it lets me eliminate a Cyberdisk or a Sectopod in a single turn of fire from one person.

If you check the middle pages posts NGTM-1R, there quite a few meatbags willing to be used and disemboweled

Don't worry, I saw. My current list of unassigned is as follows:
Patriot
Turambar
MP-Ryan
Mongoose
deathfun
swashmebuckle
-Joshua-
FireSpawn
JGZinv
DireWolf
Hobbie
Aesaar
Dekker
Rodo
FlamingMamba
Hobbie

1 - This is a reprieve from the harsh lash of the dice god.
2 - This is a break before we get absolutely screwed over next mission in payment.

Either way I don't like it.

Please tell me about the tanks.

The SHIV, or Super Heavy Infantry Vehicle, comes in a variety of flavors we'll explore if I have the money. They're interesting that they're not really classed the same way as the old ones. SHIVs go through three models, but the models are unrelated to the mounted weapons system, which is upgraded for all models via the Foundry and once you research your laser or plasma upgrades, all your SHIVs are equipped with that sort of weapon. They follow most of the normal rules for HWPs/SWS from X-COM otherwise but only take one slot in the transport.

While I agree on it being extremely effective against them (making the perk more situational), the higher end enemies don't usually go down as easy (let alone *not* be in some form of cover)
And with damage roulette, putting them down one right after another will certainly be a feat which requires many sacrificed goats

Excellent, the shiny new toys. Assuming we ever get one.
Good point though about the Damage Roulette and Double Tap, hadn't thought of that. In the Zone, combined with the wrath of the Random Number God, would probably screw us over royally.

My images all uploaded in a bizarre order this time, so apologies if they seem wrong related to the rest of the post; I probably screwed up.

Operation Fading Mother
Montreal, Canada
Responding to Abduction Attempt
Present: StarSlayer, The E, IronBeer, SpardaSon21, Gortef.

So we deploy and then suddenly, new aliens! I wonder what those are, maybe they'll be friendly-or everyone could shoot them. That works too. (Sparda, The E, and IronBeer all fired. IronBeer got a 1 HP hit, The E got a 2 HP hit, and Sparda struck out. No kill.)

So, we've got four aliens in view and two snipers. Let's get rid of some. StarSlayer takes the far Sectoid and Gortef one of the new thingies. Two good hits, two down. At least the long rifles don't deal out single-HP hate from the Dice Gods. (Note from the future: I will regret that statement.)

The E attempts to clean up the other two new things with a rocket. Minor issue: He missed his intended aim point. Still, it sends one of them flying hilariously through the air and off the map, no mean feat considering they're quite far from the edge there.

So it falls to IronBeer to run up and mug the last one for all its remaining HP with a Run & Gun move.

StarSlayer moves out to find the missing Sectoid. And he does. And it's too far away to shoot, so he takes cover and it fires during its own turn.

And then Gortef removes the problem. Seriously having Snipers makes everything better.

Two more aliens turn up inside the large crypt, but only one is visible after their move. The E takes the shot, but it doesn't connect. IronBeer to the rescue.

So between The E and StarSlayer, we flushed another three Sectoids. It's time for the reaction fire now! StarSlayer misses. Sparda misses. Gortef hits! Scratch one.

Gortef attempts to follow up this brilliant success...
...and is immediately backhanded by the Dice Gods. A 1HP sniper rifle hit. Congratulations Gortef, your nickname is now being changed to "Plink".

This is why the Assault's Lightning Reflexes is good and right. It automatically forces the first reaction shot taken at someone during a turn to miss, which is helpful when trying to flush overwatched aliens. StarSlayer demonstrates by closing and killing the Sectoid that reaction-fired.

Merciless (improved balance and AI) + military retexture + extra heads + toobox (no cutscenes, aliens don't get an auto-move, adjusting rooke nationality ratios, free cam, etc, etc..) + resource hacker (because minor tweaks are cool). I even re-created the Expendables team.

Aww man, stop spitting goop at The E, that's not cool.

Or shooting Sparda!

So, fire returned, and the dice gods are unhappy with everyone, everybody with the 1 HP slapped-in-the-face. AND STOP SHOOTING AT SPARDA. Least they missed this time.

Pistol return fire. Plinking for 1 HP, but that's intentional. Basic pistols are the best way to maximize capture chance because they plink and you can bring alien health down controllably.

However we don't need all of them alive, so this guy takes one round in the gut from Gortef.

The E shows off Suppression. The aliens do not like Suppression and react quite violently to it. Case in point: the alien he's suppressing tries to hurt him to break it. So does the other alien that's badly injured. Neither hits.

AND THEN THESE GUYS DROP IN. Great, just great.

StarSlayer's reaction shot once again demonstrates why his current nickname is "Crit Miss" although I could fit it I would totally nickname him "Hated of the Dice Gods".

Sparda, too, is not favored. Though he does do more damage than StarSlayer
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/ngtm1r/2013-06-27_00016_zps7aef4087.jpg)

So this is Double Shot, which does pretty much what it says on the tin. Two shots, at an accuracy penalty, but in this case that still leaves StarSlayer a 62% chance to hit. One miss, one three-HP hit, not what was hoped for but eh I'll take it.

IronBeer's miss, not so much. AND THEN SOMEONE INVADES THE E'S PERSONAL SPACE AGAIN. Ouch. Still, three HP that's not so bad, he'll live, not a huge threat despite the fact he's poisoned. (I will regret writing this.)

And the the aliens show some dumbness, because apparently they can suppress too but didn't try to just counter-suppress The E. No, they tried to suppress IronBeer. NEWS FLASH: IronBeer has Lightning Reflexes, your free reaction shot when he moves to break suppression will automatically miss.

And then The E gets shot again. For another three HP. So he's down to two. And he's poisoned so he's going to lose one of them at least. Frak.

Gortef kills one of the Floaters because I am now officially pissed off.

The E displaces and kills his Personal Space Invader with a burst.

Sparda misses his attempt to kill the alien suppressing IronBeer. Incidentally, the incoming fire here is from the Suppression directed at IronBeer. It also vapes Sparda's cover, which I didn't notice until it was too late. That could potentially suck.

Told you the free shot would miss. Actually it missed so hard the dude spun around to fire backwards. (And then his shots turned over 90 degrees leaving the barrel to be a near miss. Go figure.)

Ride the fraking lightning. First operational use of the HLPX-COM stun weapons is a success.

And then Sparda gets shot for all but one of his remaining HP and there's another active alien and FML-wait it missed. Okay, panic over now.

You're going to suffer hours of excruciating interrogation for this! Both of you!

And then there were Sectoids, Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. They even shot IronBeer, though fortunately he's not too badly hurt.

Gortef returns fire. The other two Sectoids have run off on me.

So basically only StarSlayer and IronBeer are fit to assault ship with at least two known aliens in it. This'll be fun. In much the same way Dwarf Fortress is fun. I'm so short on useable firepower right now I'm going to actually send in Gortef with a pistol because I'm that out of options.

IronBeer spots one of the crystalline ones so we're back up to three aliens, but misses his shot at it. This is going to suck.

StarSlayer runs in, taking some hits on the way, and stuns a Sectoid, but that still leaves two active aliens. Still gonna suck.

Starslayer is shot. IronBeer is shot. StarSlayer is hanging on with 2 HP and IronBeer is at 4 HP but by now it's much too late. This is gonna suck, but we're gonna win it.

StarSlayer uses the Double Shot again, which is fortunate because once again the Dice Gods tried to backhand him with a 1 HP hit on the first round. The second round finishes the job.

IronBeer runs up to our Crystalline Entity wannabe, and at this range literally cannot miss plus 70% crit chance. You can guess what happens next.

Mission Complete. And a mess.
Hospital stays for everyone except Gortef! (Who got promoted, lemme know know what lieutenant-level sniper skill you want plz Gortef.) StarSlayer is in for 14 days, The E for 13, Sparda for 11, and IronBeer for 8.

It's a good thing I was planning on doing a housekeeping post because I'm pretty sure if I gave you all another combat mission or simply pointed a floor fan at you, you'd all fall over dead.

Welp, queue up the B-team while we recoup and the geeks brain-probe our guests.

I'll miss going out into the field and shooting aliens while I'm busy lying in the hospital as my body tries to regrow my entire skin. :(

At least no one died. That's an impressive little tidbit

Don't you mean the A-Team?
I wants me some promotions... (What class am I anyway?)

With no kills, you're still a Rookie and unclassed. We'll be working on that. I make a point to try and have backup people because of missions like this.

So who's in the B-Squad? Does this mean that I will soon be using my face as a bullet shield?

At the moment, anyone below the rank of Sergeant from the list, plus a few other rookies who haven't yet acquired a name due to lack of field deployment.

Damn... I kicked butt. But the best thing is that we all came back alive from those two missions, though the second one got pretty close.

Hospital stays for everyone except Gortef! (Who got promoted, lemme know know what lieutenant-level sniper skill you want plz Gortef.) StarSlayer is in for 14 days, The E for 13, Sparda for 11, and IronBeer for 8.

Battle Scanner please. I think that the more we see the better.

It's too bad the snipers where injured as well.  I found it a lot easier to 'blood' the rookies when their are a pair of dead eyes ready to take a xeno's head off if things go sideways.

And now, gear.
DJ is demonstrating the equippage screen for us. Everyone say hi to DJ.

As you can see there are four categories of gear that can be changed out. Armor, Primary Weapon, Secondary Weapon, and Inventory Slot.

Armor is armor. You probably guessed this. It gives you bonus HP above your own natural amount. If only the bonus HP is lost, you're not counted as wounded come mission end. Our current Kevlar suits don't count for much against plasma, so we're not getting much out of them. But I'm not letting you all run around naked, so you will take your 1 HP bonus and you will like it.

Primary weapon is your gun. Rookies and supports carry assault rifles. Snipers carry sniper weapons. Heavies carry LMGs. Assaults have a shotgun. (Though they can also use rifle-type weaponry from the laser and plasma lines.)

Secondary weapon is a pistol, of whatever pistol variety we have handy. Unless you're a Heavy, in which case your secondary weapon is a goddamn rocket launcher because that's how Heavies roll.

And lastly inventory slot! DJ is currently showing off our inventory options. We have the ever-reliable though kinda low-damage Frag Grenade, the magical mystery S.C.O.P.E., the Arc Thrower taser, and the Medikit. (Also there's a nanofiber underlay for the armor of which I've made zero, because it's only a second bonus HP.)

Grenades are grenades. Pull pin, throw grenade (not pin, this is important), explosion, hurt enemies. Yay. You get handed grenades in the event of rookiehood (they're good for first kills) or if there's just nothing else you could use better. You only get one grenade per mission, unless you have the Heavy perk that lets you carry two, but a Heavy with two grenades is mucking about because they should have the next piece of gear in their inventory slot.

The S.C.O.P.E. is, well, a scope. It grants a +10 bonus to your Aim stat meaning you shoot people in the face better. I tend to hand them out to heavies, who have not-great Aim, people who have not-great Aim for other reasons, and Snipers, because Snipers have really really good Aim but they never get close enough to the enemy to use any of the other gear profitably. S.C.O.P.E. is also upgradable to improve Aim bonus and provide an increased chance of a critical hit.

The Arc Thrower is a taser. You saw them in action last mission. They are for the stunning of aliens. At 1 HP they have a 90% chance to stun, stepping down to 80% at 2 HP and 70% at 3 HP. If the alien has more than 3 HP, however, their chance to stun drops off much faster. It can be upgraded to provide better tasing, and also to do other things involving equipment we don't have yet. As it is already the job of Assaults to close with the enemy, I usually end up giving them out to Assaults, but I've also been known to hand them out to Heavies when I'm out of S.C.O.P.E. to give them. Really you could justify giving them to anybody but a Sniper (who should not be that close to the bad guys).

And lastly, the Medikit. Medikits heal 4 HP and are single-use, unless you have the Support perk that lets you use it three times. They can also stabilize critically injured soldiers (or revive them with the right perk) and cure poison. Holding a Medikit renders you immune to poison automatically, too. Via research they can be upgraded to do more cool stuff, like improved healing amounts. Medikits can be used by anyone, but only Supports get the perks related to them, so they're usually handed out to Supports.

Next up: A mission with some of the rookies.

Operation Purple Druid
Responding to Abduction Attempt
Fortleza, Brazil
Present: StarSlayer, SpardaSon21, Gortef, Commander Red Nammoc DJ, Trashman

It was a dark and stormy night. I'm not even joking here. It's raining. Everyone's wading in water up to the ankles because the storm drains are overwhelmed. We've got lightning flashes and thunder in the distance, and the wind is whistling across anything that could actually make it whistle. Conditions are terrible. Frankly the fact the aliens WANT to fight in this is baffling, but they do, so we're going to kill them all.

So DJ steps up to the plate because this alien, the only one we've encountered, is dumb and gave him a shot without cover interference. 78% hit chance, 60% crit chance, practical a free-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/ngtm1r/2013-06-30_00003_zps96ae05d5.jpg)
-oh **** me. He hit for 1 HP. DICE GODS, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?

Trashman also has a shot at 50/10 and connects, killing the alien. Congrats Trash, you're not a rookie anymore. We'll see what you become when the mission is over.

A Sectoid charges out of the darkness to see what happened to his buddy, and is shot by StarSlayer. Not a kill, but eh, one more hit. I'm sure DJ can finish them off.

And then they run off into the darkness again because oh my god it's HLPX-COM and they shot me!

It runs back out again next turn and Trashman guns it down while Sparda blows his shot. Okay, so the rookie is showing up everyone in this mission. Why not?

And JESUS CHRIST ON A POGO STICK! Five hostiles at once! Trash, watch what you find!

Three people take reaction shots as the aliens run for cover, but nobody hits. After the aliens have scattered only one is still visible. Trash himself has a thirty-percent chance so he goes overwatch to keep it in place, since aliens are terrified of overwatch.

He's shot at for his troubles, but they miss.

Sparda removes the alien on a 56/55 shot, using his Headshot perk.

And then all hell breaks loose as the Sectoids charge on both flanks, firing as they come. Nobody is hit, but the car Trashman is taking cover behind is about to explode into tiny pieces so he's going to have to move. Also, the truck DJ is using for cover has no less than three of them sheltering on the side he's not covering (and I missed screenshoting them as they moved there), so he's gonna need to move too before he gets flanked.

Gortef starts eliminating the left side of the pincer, with the guy who's furthest out on the flank.

Trashman, despite a 70/60 hit/crit chance, is slapped by the Dice Gods. (Twice, as on the next turn he misses his shot entirely despite the 70/60.)

DJ is missed by one alien, who hits the car lighting it up, returns fire and also misses, and then is shot by a second alien. He has to reposition.

The aliens continue trying to press forward. Sparda and Gortef teach this one why he shouldn't.

And then, without DJ positioned to pin them down to their spots, they push up to the edge of the truck, peek around...and shoot Trashman in the back for a 6 HP critical, killing him. Dammit.

StarSlayer is not having any of this **** and double-shots. The Dice Gods attempt to interfere, but that's why we have two rounds.

Another alien moves up to the position of the one that StarSlayer killed. DJ is fired upon but missed, and returns fire once more. Right into the alien's left eye socket, killing it. You're a Sergeant now DJ. I hope you live for your promotion to go into effect, because this mission hasn't been good about that.

Finally, StarSlayer moves up and uses doubleshot again, once more destroying the alien despite the attempted interference of the Dice Gods. At this point I'm considering changing the nickname again. Maybe "Nay Theist".

DJ uses the Medikit I gave him. On himself, because you can actually do that, and I'm not in the mood to lose the other lowbie on this mission.

Another Sectoid runs forward, and takes cover in a position that leaves it completely exposed to Gortef's fire. Seriously, check this: 100/100 hit/crit. You can guess what happens when I take the shot. (No, it's not a 1 HP hit, or I would have thrown my computer across the room.)

I think there's only one left. It shot DJ as he moved out to find it, but seeing as it's the only alien left, I'm going to try to capture it. Not because I need to capture a Sectoid, but because I want its plasma pistol.

It shoots DJ again before StarSlayer gets close enough to stun.

Even at a 90% stun chance, the stun fails. Fortunately, Sparda's got StarSlayer's back and takes the alien down hard instead.

Mission complete, though the secondary objective of easing in some of our less-talented troopers didn't go so well. StarSlayer is now a Captain Assault, Sparda a Lieutenant Sniper, and DJ a Sergeant Support. Refer to the list back here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=84856.msg1695608#msg1695608) and lemme know, folks.

(Once that's done, hopefully later tonight, we've got a UFO to assault.)

Nope! Honestly it's not a terrible idea, but I like doing the text commentary. I might do both at some point, emphasis on might.

I'd feel sorry for TrashMan, but he died defending Earth, and let's face it, every time an HLP team member gets offed I get that much further from making coffee and typing reports (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pco6GFCVcHU) and that much closer to killing alien scum :P

... Well frak. Can't I get a break?

Curious as to why you didn't use grenades?
I know they destroy weapon fragments, but when alines are hiding behind a car 1-2 grandes can kill the lot of them.

Well... I guess TrashMan mk2 reporting for duty.
Altough I fear I'll never see action again.

Curious as to why you didn't use grenades?

I didn't think about it.

In honesty, there was one good grenade target in that mission, when the aliens were bunched up behind the truck, and I couldn't remember enough of the hard cover/grenade interactions to be sure if it would have killed them or just got you flanked faster. Most of the time they were near a truck or something I could/should have managed to kill them quicker than waiting the turn for it to blow too.

From what I recall, if it's in the radius, somebody is going to get hurt real bad cover or not (at least, that's what mine did... whether or not it was non-destructible cover at the time I can't recall)

Hindsight 20/20 regardless

IIRC, enough damage and the truck/car can blow up immediately.

Curious as to why you didn't use grenades?

It looked like the only time more than 1 alien was in grenade range, DJ was the only one who could have grenaded them, and he had to move away from the flaming car that turn instead. Starslayer may have been able to hit them, but didn't seem to be carrying a grenade. And the next turn it was too late.

AND WE'RE BACK. Scotty, kill them all please.
He tried, but the Interceptors make lousy ground-attack aircraft, so we're sending in the ground troops!

Operation Blinding Ruin
UFO Crash Recovery
South Africa
Present: StarSlayer, SpardaSon21, Gortef, Ironbeer, Kobrar44

This one went down hard, scattering bits of itself about and starting a lot of fires. Everyone grabs cover: Snipers wide, assaults up the middle, and rookie Kobrar44 on the flank most likely to be engaged. I'm hoping for some Sectoids he can grenade in this mission, as stuff suitable for rifle plink kills is getting thin on the ground.

This mission has been oddly quiet. It's turn three and still no contacts. The target UFO is significantly larger than before, which explains why Scotty had to put extra missiles into it to bring it down.

Kobrar reports the sound of aliens moving to the north and says “they sound like the Floater tapes”. We'll see.

Contact, multiple floaters, moving to flank. Three reaction shots hit nothing but air.
StarSlayer misses too.

IronBeer and StarSlayer close with the enemy. IronBeer hits, but doesn't kill, his target. Considering the range is point-blank, that one's gonna have to go before it returns fire. StarSlayer misses. Sparda drops the one menacing IronBeer.

Gortef and Kobrar haven't got a shot, so go overwatch to close off alien routes of advance. The alien falls back, so the assaulties go in after it. A pair of Sectoids emerge from the ship in an attempt to flank...straight into fire from Gortef, Sparda, and Kobrar. Gortef brings one down with the long-rifle, the other two miss the target.
Kobrar gets his unrookie-ing kill with a grenade. Just As Planned.

The Floater has gotten away, but we've already gotten a breach of the ship while looking for him, so everyone's going to go in that way.

Confession: I've never actually used the Battle Scanner ability before that Gortef has, so we're in unknown territory here. Still...tossing it into a larger room ahead of my troops actually sounds like a good plan.
Then it runs into the wall while being tossed and doesn't go where I wanted. (It's the thing above the doorway radiating blue light. Secretly, the battle scanner is the hyperintelligent shade of blue.) Well frak.

The Floater launches himself through a door, without opening it. (No I'm dead serious, the door isn't open.) Directly between StarSlayer and IronBeer, and also within line-of-sight to Kobrar. Everyone shoots. Only StarSlayer hits, because the alien was first-round killed. The body? I have no ****ing idea. I think it phased through the top of the ship as it was blowing up, because all that's left is blood spatter.

The bridge proper is empty. We need one of the Crystalline Entity “Outsider” aliens alive, so this is a disappointment.

“The ****! Sectoids behind us!” StarSlayer just saved the team and...crap, an Outsider in the other engine room as well. Both snipers pistol-plink it to bring its health down, and then IronBeer crashes the party from the other door with his arc thrower.

No eyes on the Sectoids. We had a count of three before they skittered into the dark. I also have three stuns left, so I'd kind of like to stun them all for their weapons in anticipation of the new era of plasma tech. This may not be practical, though, so I'll kill them if I have to.

Kobrar takes a minor hit while seeking a good firing position, on the second Sectoid to actually shoot at him. The 1 HP slap of the Dice Gods rests upon the aliens this time.

He returns fire and...actually does his weapon's maximum theoretical damage, 4 HP, which kills the target. I don't think anyone else has, though plenty of people have gotten crits. Hell, I don't think anyone else has done more than 2 HP with an assault rifle. Kobrar is The Favored of the Dice Gods! Bow down before him!

StarSlayer kills another one. The last one will go to the cap thing, I guess. First, it misses Kobrar because he is The One.

IronBeer plinks. Kobrar plinks. (Hit on a 45% chance! Favored of the Dice Gods!) StarSlayer tries to stun, but it doesn't work. Oh well, get this guy next turn...and the StarSlayer's CQB overwatch shot fries the bastard because it tried to move. Whoops!

Mission complete.

Congrats Kobrar, you're a Sniper now. And though we had to replace the chestplate of your armor, you're also just fine.

It takes three turns
Although an easier fashion apparently (just read this) is to actually use explosives before they rise up to eat your face. According to reports, that eliminates them outright, preventing them from ever rising in the first place

IT'S TERROR MISSION TIME.

Operation Black Breath
Guangzhou, China
Responding to Terror Attack
Present: SpardaSon21, IronBeer, StarSlayer, The E, Gortef

We're clearing a road. Not because the Chinese asked us to; any local military or police presence is already fully engaged. Rather, we've tracked the greatest amount of alien comms chatter to this location and we're wiping out everyone here to make it stop. Hoping for a C3I target but will settle for just a body count.

In the words of the Halo Marines: CONTACT! LOTS OF CONTACT! Lots of reaction shots too, nothing but air.

And then it's Chryssalid time.

See how StarSlayer missed the reaction shot? That's gonna be a recurring theme on Chryssalids in this mission. Everyone will blow their best defense against the charging alien monstrosity.

The Dice Gods prove to once again hate StarSlayer. Actually, at this point, I'm beginning to suspect his Double Shot is rigged to only do one damage on a first round hit. The second is actually a 6 HP crit, but for some reason doesn't show. Incidentally, this also runs StarSlayer dry on ammo, which is kind of awkward since he still has the CQC reaction shot to fall back on if it charges him...

Gortef blows a shot for the first time in several missions.

The E finishes off the disturbingly close Chryssalid with a dose of 7.62mm to the face, buying time for StarSlayer to reload.

IronBeer blows his reaction shot at a Chryssalid. Warned ya; it's a recurring theme.

Sparda gets a three-damage hit on a Floater. Not good enough for a kill, but it doesn't quite qualify as "plink" either.

The E injures a Chryssalid, but not very much. It just took down a civvie, too.

We ARE NOT reenacting that ****ing World War Z adapation, people! KILL IT.

IronBeer, positioned to reaction-shot the Chryssalid into submission if it charges an empty-gun StarSlayer, instead has it go the other way. And misses again.

Gortef fires a reaction shot and he actually hit the Chryssalid! But for one damage, living up to his nickname of "Plink", so he might as well not have.

A reloaded StarSlayer doubletaps the zombie, getting two crits in the process for eight damage total. (This seems wrong; it also kills the zombie, which I thought had ten HP...)

Although I could do that work for you with a twitch video showcasing them all for people

That'd be fun, easier to recognize people.

Also, next mission i want a shot at these buggers! :(

I would like to not be a Grenadier, if that could be arranged.

Fe/male outfits, skins and tints
Also note, that with each new armour piece comes additional looks. I only had Carapace and the Regular to demonstrate

And now that deathfun's done that I've run out of excuses. Oh noezel?

Lemme know if you're interested people. I will probably have another mission sometime tomorrow, at the moment, however, I'm pretty sure I'd fry my computer attempting to run it.

Once they reach high rank, snipers are almost unbeatable. Squadsight means theoretically infinite range, and their accuracy is so high 100% hit rates on enemies in partial cover are possible and even probable. Just need to find a good position to get a clear line of fire and start racking up the kills.

On that note, if you still need help fighting the aliens, I'll gladly join XCOM. Looks- and Specialty-wise, I'll let you choose, though I'd prefer an avatar resembling Jack Harkness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Harkness).

I have had some, actually and I'll get back to this, I swear. But Blaise Russel destroyed my free time.

As you command, imperious leader.

Back into the flow sometime this week, as my commitments at Palomar are temporarily lessened.

Family comes first mate.

Sry for hijacking, but how do I activate Slingshot in game?
I'm pretty sure I bought it...is there a choice after the first mission?!

It'll come in form of a council mission which can happen anytime from just starting, to later on

There is a nonzero possibility that by delaying I have broken it since I needed to run an abduction. I hope not, but it's possible.

I did similarly encounter that. The council talked to me about the mission start but I declined it
Now it has yet to come back, so I've no idea what to make of it

So I've confirmed it's broken, and also, I've decided to abandon this LP formally because I'm just burnt out on X-COM for the moment.

We will revisit the LP series when Enemy Within drops.

So be it. It was fun while it lasted.

If you're not having fun with an LP, it's really best to just move on. No complaints at all here- I totally know that feeling.

Genetic enhancements, badass cyborg troopers, all that good stuff. HLPX-COM will really stick it to those ETs come November, right!?  :)

Alas, now I never shall lay down my burden.  Fated to be locked in combat with the xenos invader for perpetuity.  In the grim present of a corrupted save file there is only war.

"Yukikaze (戦闘妖精雪風 Sentō Yōsei Yukikaze?, lit. Battle Fairy Yukikaze)" not keen on the 'battle fairy' part tbh

Well, it's either that, the UMF from Falcon Gold, the plane from Stealth, or the AI-based fighter from Macross Plus.

EDIT: I suppose there's also the plane from Day of the Cheetah, but I can't remember the thing's name.
